That is the battery size and chemistry Schlage lists for its US Encode products. Schlage also provides low-battery warnings on the lock touchscreen and in the Schlage Home app, so you can replace the cells before the lock stops responding. There is no manufacturer-backed evidence that one AA alkaline brand lasts longer than another, so the defensible recommendation is based on type, size, freshness and correct installation—not a brand ranking.
This guide covers the Encode Smart WiFi Deadbolt and Encode Smart WiFi Lever, explains what Schlage’s published specifications do and do not establish, and gives a practical replacement and troubleshooting procedure.

Quick answer: buy four fresh AA alkaline batteries
For Schlage Encode residential locks, purchase a pack of AA alkaline batteries and install four cells at the same time. Schlage’s US product specifications identify that combination for both the Encode Smart WiFi Deadbolt and the Encode Smart WiFi Lever. The recommendation is deliberately specific: AA is the size, alkaline is the chemistry, and four is the quantity for a complete replacement.
Do not treat a higher price, a larger marketing claim or a different chemistry as proof of better performance. The official Encode pages specify the required size and chemistry but do not rank battery brands or publish comparative tests. A fresh, compatible pack from a reliable retailer is therefore a sounder choice than a claim that an untested brand will extend runtime.

What Schlage’s specifications establish
The following details come from Schlage’s current US product pages, checked October 13, 2026. The pages describe typical use, not a guaranteed interval or an independently measured laboratory result.
| Encode device | Required cells | Published battery-life statement | Low-battery notification | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Encode Smart WiFi Deadbolt with Greenwich trim | Four AA alkaline batteries | Up to six months with typical use; manufacturer estimate | Lock touchscreen and Schlage Home app provide advance notice | Schlage product specifications |
| Encode Smart WiFi Lever with Century trim | Four AA alkaline batteries | Up to six months with typical use; manufacturer estimate | Encode family guidance describes advance low-battery notice | Schlage product specifications and Schlage Encode guidance |
The phrase “up to six months of battery life with typical use” is Schlage’s estimate. “Up to” means some installations may run for less time, while lighter-use installations may approach the upper end. The figure should not be converted into a promise that every lock will operate for exactly six months.
Deadbolt and lever: same battery requirement, different lock hardware
Encode models can look and operate differently because one is a deadbolt and the other is a lever, but the cited specifications list the same battery requirement: four AA alkaline cells. You do not need a special battery format for the lever, a different count for the deadbolt, or a separate “smart-lock” battery category.
Encode Smart WiFi Deadbolt
The deadbolt page lists four AA alkaline batteries and the typical-use life estimate. Its touchscreen and connected app are part of the low-battery warning path. Use the product page for your exact trim when checking installation details or other hardware specifications.
Encode Smart WiFi Lever
The lever page also lists four AA alkaline batteries and the same manufacturer life estimate. A lever’s mechanical arrangement differs from a deadbolt’s, but that does not change the stated cell size, chemistry or quantity.

Why the recommendation is alkaline AA
Battery selection has three separate questions: physical size, chemical type and quantity. The Encode specifications answer all three. AA identifies the physical format; alkaline identifies the chemistry; four identifies how many cells the lock is designed to use as a set.
That matters because a battery can fit physically while still falling outside the product information Schlage provides. The cited pages do not endorse lithium primary cells, nickel-metal-hydride rechargeables or other alternatives for Encode. They also do not provide a test showing that any alternative produces longer service, better wireless performance or safer operation. Treat those alternatives as unverified rather than as an automatic upgrade.

How to choose a replacement pack
When shopping, use this checklist rather than trying to identify a “best” logo:
- Size: every cell should be marked AA.
- Chemistry: the package should identify alkaline cells.
- Quantity: buy at least four matching cells for one complete change; a larger pack is useful if you keep spares.
- Freshness: select a pack with a clearly printed expiration or best-before date as far in the future as practical.
- Condition: reject cells with dents, torn wrappers, corrosion or leakage.
- Consistency: use four cells from the same pack and replace all four together instead of mixing ages or chemistries.
- Storage: keep unused cells in their original packaging in a cool, dry place, away from loose metal objects that could short the terminals.
Schlage’s product information does not establish a winning brand, a tested price advantage or a brand-by-brand runtime ranking. Retail price, pack size, availability, warranty language and printed shelf-life dates are reasonable shopping comparisons, but they are not evidence that one brand will make the lock last longer.

Step-by-step battery replacement
Replace the complete set as soon as the lock or app warns of low power. The exact cover and screw arrangement depends on the installed Encode model and trim, so use the polarity diagram and hardware instructions supplied with your lock.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Prepare the new cells. Confirm that all four are AA alkaline batteries. Keep the new set together and do not open it until you are ready to install it.
- Keep an alternative entry method available. Before opening the interior battery compartment, make sure you can enter with a key, an authorized code or another method appropriate to your installation. This prevents a depleted lock from becoming your only access problem.
- Open the interior battery compartment. Follow the model’s printed instructions to remove the interior cover. Do not force the cover or pry against wiring, connectors or the lock body.
- Remove the old cells. Note the polarity symbols before taking them out. Remove all four and inspect the compartment for leakage, corrosion or damaged contacts.
- Clean only when necessary and safely. If you see residue or corrosion, stop and follow Schlage’s care instructions or contact support rather than installing new cells over visible damage. Do not introduce liquid into the electronics.
- Install four new batteries. Match every positive and negative end to the diagram. Press each cell into place without bending the contacts, and verify that all four are seated firmly.
- Close the compartment. Refit the cover exactly as designed, ensuring that no wire is pinched and that the cover is secure.
- Test locally. Operate the lock from the touchscreen or interior control as appropriate for your model, then test a normal unlock and lock cycle while the door is open. Testing with the door open prevents a misaligned bolt from trapping you outside.
- Confirm the app status. Open the Schlage Home app and check whether the low-battery warning has cleared. If the warning remains immediately after a correct installation, continue with the troubleshooting steps below rather than repeatedly swapping cells.
How to interpret the life estimate
Schlage’s published interval is tied to “typical use,” not to a fixed number of lock cycles, a specific Wi-Fi signal strength or a universal household pattern. Your result can vary with how often the lock is operated, how long the touchscreen is active, wireless communication demands, temperature and mechanical resistance from the door.
A lock that is used many times each day may consume energy faster than one used occasionally. A door that rubs, binds or requires the motor to work against pressure can also create a problem that looks like poor battery life. If a fresh set drains unusually quickly, investigate the door alignment and latch movement instead of assuming that a different brand will solve it.
Because the figure is a manufacturer estimate, it is best used for planning: keep a spare four-cell pack available and respond to warnings promptly. It is not a service-level guarantee, and Schlage does not publish an independent comparative test that would let you calculate a guaranteed runtime for a particular brand.
Use the lock’s warnings instead of guessing
Encode provides two stated warning channels. The lock touchscreen can indicate low battery, and the Schlage Home app can provide an alert with advance notice. Check both when you receive a warning, especially if more than one household member manages the lock.

If the touchscreen warns first
Replace all four cells at the next practical opportunity, then perform an open-door lock and unlock test. If the warning persists, verify polarity, confirm that every cell is AA alkaline and check that the contacts are clean and undamaged.
If the app warns first
Use the app notification as a prompt to schedule a physical replacement. A phone alert does not change the battery requirement: install four AA alkaline cells, then verify the lock locally. If the app and touchscreen disagree, treat the warning as a reason to inspect the batteries rather than ignoring it.
Troubleshooting common battery problems
The lock does not power on after replacement
- Remove the cells and reinstall them against the polarity diagram.
- Confirm that all four cells are AA alkaline, not a mixture of sizes or chemistries.
- Inspect for a loose contact, damaged wrapper or residue in the compartment.
- Reinstall the cover fully; an improperly seated cover or connector can prevent normal operation.
- If the lock still shows no response, use the manual’s support procedure. Do not keep inserting random battery types.
The low-battery warning remains
First check that the old cells were all removed and that the new cells are seated. Then close the cover, operate the lock once with the door open and allow the app to refresh. A persistent warning after these checks can indicate a contact, sensor or electronic issue rather than a battery-brand issue.
The new batteries drain unusually fast
- Review how frequently the lock is used and whether the touchscreen is being activated repeatedly.
- Check that the deadbolt or latch moves freely with the door open and does not bind when the door is closed.
- Look for a weak wireless connection or repeated connectivity activity in the app.
- Confirm that the cells were fresh, matched and free of damage when installed.
- If the pattern continues, document the installation date and warning behavior for Schlage support.
The lock works with the door open but struggles when closed
This points first to alignment or mechanical resistance, not proof that the AA batteries are unsuitable. Inspect the strike and bolt path, and correct the door fit according to the installation instructions. A motor forced against a misaligned door can consume power and prevent reliable locking.

Should you use lithium or rechargeable AA cells?
The cited Encode specifications identify AA alkaline batteries and do not endorse another chemistry. For that reason, this guide cannot recommend lithium primary or rechargeable AA cells as a performance upgrade. Their electrical behavior, recharge requirements and discharge characteristics differ from alkaline cells, and the official pages supplied for these models do not establish compatibility, runtime or safety advantages for them.

Sticking with the specified chemistry also makes troubleshooting clearer. If a problem occurs, you can eliminate mixed chemistry and unsupported battery behavior before investigating the lock itself.
Buying in single packs versus bulk
A four-cell pack is enough for one complete replacement. A larger pack can be practical for a home with several Encode locks or for keeping a spare set on hand, but buying more cells does not change the lock’s requirement. Store extras in the manufacturer’s packaging and rotate them before their printed date.
When comparing listings, calculate the price per cell only after confirming that the pack contains AA alkaline batteries. A low price for a mixed-size, rechargeable or unlabeled pack is not a like-for-like comparison. No current retailer price or authoritative brand runtime comparison is established here, so a table of “best value” brands would be speculation.
Safe handling and disposal
Keep loose batteries away from keys, coins and other metal objects. Do not crush, puncture, open, heat or recharge cells labeled for single use. If a cell leaks, avoid skin and eye contact, remove it with appropriate care and follow local battery-recycling or household hazardous-waste guidance. Never place a visibly damaged or leaking cell back into the lock.
What this evidence can—and cannot—tell you
| Question | Supported answer | What is not established |
|---|---|---|
| What size does Encode use? | AA | A different size as an approved alternative |
| What chemistry is specified? | Alkaline | That lithium or rechargeable cells are endorsed |
| How many cells are required? | Four | A reduced count or a single emergency cell as normal operation |
| How long should they last? | Schlage says up to six months with typical use | An exact interval for every household or an independent test result |
| Which brand is best? | No brand ranking is provided by the cited product information | A claim that one brand lasts longer than another |
| How will you know they are low? | The touchscreen and Schlage Home app provide advance indication | That a warning can be ignored safely until the lock stops responding |
Bottom line for an Encode owner
Buy four fresh AA alkaline batteries, install them as a complete matched set, and respond to the touchscreen or Schlage Home app warning before the lock becomes unreliable. The Encode deadbolt and lever specifications support that recommendation. They do not support a favorite brand, a guaranteed runtime or an upgrade to another chemistry, so choose on verified size, chemistry, freshness, condition and availability rather than unproven performance claims.
