Why the Quest 3S is the budget pick
The Quest 3S is a standalone wireless headset, so you can use it for supported VR and mixed-reality experiences without buying or connecting a gaming PC. Meta describes its Quest devices as “wireless all-in-one VR devices.” It also supports PC VR through Meta Quest Link over a cable or Air Link wirelessly, so standalone use is not your only option. Its value comes from keeping the Quest 3’s core processing platform while cutting back on the display and lens adjustments. PC Gamer named the Quest 3S its best budget VR headset in a guide published September 14, 2026, while noting that buyers seeking modern optics may prefer the Quest 3 or a higher-end model. That is the publication’s editorial judgment, not a universal ranking.
What the Quest 3S costs in the US in 2026
The Quest 3S launched in the US at $299.99 in September 2024, but that is a historical price, not the reported current MSRP. Tom’s Hardware reported that Meta’s US price increases took effect April 19, 2026: the Quest 3S costs $350 for 128 GB or $450 for 256 GB, while the Quest 3 costs $600. These are reported US list prices; retailer prices, inventory and pricing in other regions can differ. Check the current local listing before buying.

Meta’s launch announcement called the Quest 3S a low-cost choice for people new to mixed reality and immersive experiences. The $299.99 figure in that announcement applied at launch, not after the 2026 increase. Meta’s September 2024 announcement provides the launch context.
Quest 3S vs. Quest 3: what the extra money changes
Meta’s comparison, dated September 30, 2026, shows that the two headsets share a processor and memory capacity, but differ substantially in display resolution, field of view and IPD adjustment. IPD is the distance between the centers of your pupils; adjusting it helps align the lenses with your eyes.

When the Quest 3S makes more sense
- You want a standalone headset and want to spend less than the reported US price of the Quest 3.
- You are new to VR or mixed reality and are comfortable accepting a lower-resolution display and narrower field of view.
- You want the option of PC VR, but do not want a gaming PC to be a requirement for standalone experiences.
When to consider the Quest 3
- You place greater importance on display resolution and a wider field of view.
- You want a continuous IPD adjustment rather than choosing among three preset positions.
- You are willing to pay more for those optical differences. The processor and memory figures in Meta’s comparison are the same for both models.
Is the Quest 3S a good first PC VR headset?
It can be used for PC VR, but it does not require a PC for its standalone functions. Meta lists Quest Link via cable and Air Link as PC VR connection methods. Air Link means a cable is not mandatory; your experience will depend on your setup and network conditions. If your main aim is to play PC VR, compare the headset’s optical trade-offs against your priorities rather than assuming the lowest purchase price is the best fit.

- Storage: Choose between the 128 GB and 256 GB versions based on your needs and the current price in your region.
