If you want the familiar city-building, research, diplomacy and victory-path structure of Civilization VII, start with Sid Meier’s Civilization VI. It is the safest bridge to another historical 4X. Choose HUMANKIND if changing cultures between eras sounds more interesting than leading one fixed nation, Old World if rulers and dynasties should drive the campaign, Age of Wonders 4 if you want hands-on fantasy battles, Endless Legend for radically different factions and quests, or Stellaris for a sprawling space sandbox.

There is no single objective winner because these games change the parts of the 4X formula that matter most: setting, pace, combat, faction identity and the amount of attention given to characters or political events.

Sid Meier’s Civilization VI: the safest bridge

Pick Civilization VI when you want Civilization VII to feel familiar. It keeps the historical 4X foundation most players associate with the series: establish cities, develop research, negotiate with rival leaders, pursue wonders and work toward several possible victory types. The logic of a turn is recognizable from the first session, so you can spend your time making strategic decisions instead of learning an entirely different model of empire management.

#1 Best Overall
Age of Wonders 4 Premium - PC [Online Game Code]
  • Craft your followers by combining bodily forms, societal traits and arcane powers. Build anything from a clan of cannibal halflings to mystic moon elves, or recreate your favorite fantasy tropes
  • Every choice opens up new possibilities and tactical advantages; deep, multilayered strategy allows you to try new tactics or explore new powers at every turn
  • Explore a new realm with each game - or create your own! Challenge new variations and combinations of locations and features, from frozen wastelands ruled by ice queens to desolated ruins where dragons roam

Why it is the closest overall match

Civilization VI preserves the broad loop of exploring a map, settling territory, improving a growing empire and deciding how science, diplomacy and military power support a chosen victory. Leaders and civilizations provide a clear identity, while wonders and research give every era a sequence of meaningful priorities. That combination is why it is the easiest recommendation for someone who simply wants another historical Civilization-style campaign.

Who should choose it

  • Players who want historical nations rather than fantasy realms or invented galaxies.
  • Anyone who values a familiar interface logic and city-centered planning.
  • New 4X players who would rather learn one established structure than several new systems at once.
  • Players who enjoy changing their route to victory from one campaign to the next.

What you are not changing

Civilization VI is a bridge, not a reinvention. If your frustration is specifically with city management, research trees, diplomacy or strategic map combat, another game in this list may be a better answer. Its strength is that it keeps those systems in the form Civilization players already understand.

HUMANKIND: build a civilization by changing cultures

Choose HUMANKIND when you want history without being locked to one civilization from start to finish. The game remains a turn-based historical 4X with cities, resources, diplomacy, armies, research, wonders and empire planning, but each era allows you to select a new culture.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How culture swapping changes a campaign

HUMANKIND covers six historical eras. Instead of selecting one nation and retaining the same identity throughout, you assemble a civilization from successive cultural choices. Your empire can therefore combine different traditions, aesthetics and gameplay styles as it advances. The decision is strategic as well as cosmetic: the culture selected for an era changes the emphasis of the civilization you are building at that point in the campaign.

Why it feels different from Civilization

The familiar 4X tasks remain—expand, research, manage cities, negotiate and field armies—but identity is fluid. A strong early-game choice does not have to dictate your entire run, and an empire can be reshaped when a new era begins. That makes the game particularly appealing if you enjoy planning around transitions rather than following one fixed national story.

Who should choose it

  • Players who want a historical setting but dislike permanent faction identity.
  • Anyone interested in combining cultural traditions and mechanical strengths across eras.
  • Players who enjoy making a new strategic choice at each major stage of a campaign.

HUMANKIND is the best fit when the question is not “Which historical nation should I lead?” but “What civilization can I create from several historical identities?”

Age of Wonders 4 Standard - PC [Online Game Code]
  • Craft your followers by combining bodily forms, societal traits and arcane powers. Build anything from a clan of cannibal halflings to mystic moon elves, or recreate your favorite fantasy tropes
  • Every choice opens up new possibilities and tactical advantages; deep, multilayered strategy allows you to try new tactics or explore new powers at every turn
  • Explore a new realm with each game - or create your own! Challenge new variations and combinations of locations and features, from frozen wastelands ruled by ice queens to desolated ruins where dragons roam

Old World: dynasties, personalities and faster ancient campaigns

Pick Old World when the people inside the empire matter as much as the empire itself. It narrows the historical scope to the ancient era and adds rulers, families, governors, generals, inheritance, events and court decisions to the normal 4X concerns.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The order system makes every turn a budget

Old World limits the actions available to you through an order system. Moving units, directing officials and carrying out other important tasks consume part of that turn’s allowance. You therefore cannot treat every unit and city as if it has unlimited actions. The result is a more focused decision process: decide which commands are urgent, which can wait and where a limited number of orders will have the greatest effect.

Why dynasties change the strategy

Rulers and families create a continuing human story. Governors and generals are not anonymous pieces; inheritance and court decisions affect how the state develops, while events can force choices that are political as well as economic. A campaign can therefore turn on succession, family relationships or a capable official as much as on territory and resources.

Who should choose it

  • Players who prefer ancient history to a march through every period of world history.
  • Anyone who wants characters, families and succession to shape the strategic map.
  • Players who find many 4X campaigns too slow or too diffuse.

Wargamer describes Old World as fast-paced, with complete playthroughs running faster than many other 4X games. That pace comes from the combination of a narrower historical scope and the order system, which forces priorities every turn.

Age of Wonders 4: the Civilization-style empire with real tactical battles

Choose Age of Wonders 4 when fantasy and direct battlefield control are the priority. Its defining blend is 4X empire growth with turn-based tactical combat. You expand through magical realms, develop and transform factions, and take command of battles instead of leaving every engagement to a purely strategic calculation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What happens on and off the battlefield

The strategic layer covers the familiar 4X work of growing an empire and making decisions about territory and faction development. When armies meet, the game shifts to a dedicated tactical context where positioning and individual battlefield decisions matter. This makes each war more hands-on than a historical 4X built primarily around the strategic map.

  • Archmage Attire - The Wizards of Magehaven dress to impress, representing their grand personalities and ambitions.
  • Age of Wonders 4: Dragon Dawn - Embrace the power of the Ancient Dragon Lords, in the Age of Wonders 4: Dragon Dawn Content Pack.
  • Age of Wonders 4: Empires and Ashes - The empires of mortals resurge after the devastation brought forth by the Wizard Kings.
  • Age of Wonders 4: Primal Fury - Channel Nature’s Spirits in the Age of Wonders 4: Primal Fury Content Pack. Create races using new beastly forms and a primeval culture.
  • Age of Wonders 4: Eldritch Realms - The Age of Wonders 4: Eldritch Realms expansion opens portals to realms filled with arcane marvels and unspeakable horrors. New forces threaten the rule of the Godir of Magehaven.

Faction and ruler customization

Age of Wonders 4 lets you grow and transform factions in magical realms. Rulers are not disposable campaign pieces: the pantheon system allows them to persist and appear in later games, giving a sequence of campaigns a sense of continuity. You can therefore treat a run as both an empire-building exercise and the origin story of a ruler or faction.

Who should choose it

  • Players who want fantasy rather than real-world history.
  • Anyone who wants turn-based battles where army composition and battlefield choices are visible.
  • Players who enjoy customizing a faction and carrying rulers forward through future campaigns.

If your main complaint with Civilization-style combat is that war feels like a secondary layer, Age of Wonders 4 is the clearest alternative in this list.

Endless Legend: asymmetric factions, quests and a dedicated battle screen

Pick Endless Legend when you want every faction to change the rules of the campaign. Set on Auriga, this turn-based fantasy 4X also draws on science-fiction ideas. Its factions are deliberately asymmetric rather than being cosmetic variations on the same empire template.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Examples of radically different factions

  • The Cultists build around a central city and convert minor factions.
  • The Roving Clans can move their settlements, changing how they claim and defend territory.
  • The Necrophages consume opponents, turning conquest into part of their faction identity.

These are not small bonuses attached to an otherwise identical play style. They alter where you settle, how you use the map and what you consider a successful turn.

Exploration and victory planning

Endless Legend combines exploration, quests, diplomacy, research and military or scientific routes to victory. Quests give the map objectives beyond simple expansion, while the faction differences encourage you to learn a new strategic language when you begin another campaign. Battles use a dedicated battle screen, adding a distinct layer between the strategic map and the final result of a war.

Who should choose it

  • Players who want a fantasy setting with unusual, non-human and science-fiction-inspired concepts.
  • Anyone who values faction asymmetry over historical authenticity.
  • Players who like quests and exploration to compete with pure territorial growth for their attention.

Endless Legend is the strongest choice when “another Civilization game” sounds too uniform and you want the faction itself to determine how the 4X loop works.

Stellaris: a galaxy-scale sandbox

Choose Stellaris when you want the broadest space 4X sandbox. You create or select a species, begin with a single solar system and expand through exploration, diplomacy, research, colonization and conflict. Instead of replaying a known historical timeline, you develop an interstellar empire whose identity can emerge from the choices and events encountered along the way.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why the campaign feels emergent

Stellaris combines species design with political and diplomatic systems. Rival empires, internal events and changing relationships can create situations that were not obvious at the start of a campaign. The large sandbox leaves room for peaceful expansion, research-focused development, diplomatic maneuvering or military confrontation without forcing every empire into the same historical sequence.

Management beyond planets and fleets

Its management layer includes species, political events, diplomacy and research as well as colonization and fleets. That breadth is the attraction for players who want an ongoing science-fiction simulation rather than a compact race through a set of historical eras.

Who should choose it

  • Players who want space exploration instead of a map based on Earth.
  • Anyone who enjoys designing a species and letting political events shape the empire.
  • Players comfortable with a sprawling campaign that can generate unexpected stories.

Stellaris is less a direct Civilization replacement than a change in scale: the core ideas of expansion, research, diplomacy and conflict remain, but the sandbox is interstellar and much more open-ended.

Two additional targeted choices

Millennia for historical age progression

Millennia is a direct historical alternative for players who want an age-progression structure and a familiar empire-building framework. It belongs on your shortlist if the appeal of Civilization VII is moving through historical stages and developing a state over time, but you want a different implementation of that progression.

Master of Orion for an approachable space gateway

Master of Orion is aimed at players who want a more approachable space 4X built around colonies, research, diplomacy, fleets and alien rivals. It offers the essential ingredients of a galactic strategy game without requiring you to begin with the broadest possible sandbox. Choose it when you want the space setting but prefer a clearer gateway into the genre.

Match the game to the decision you want to make

“I want Civilization VII’s basic rhythm.”

Start with Civilization VI. It retains the historical setting, city building, research, diplomacy, wonders and multiple victory paths that define the familiar formula.

“I want history, but my civilization should change.”

Choose HUMANKIND. Its six eras let you select a new culture at each stage, creating a civilization assembled from changing identities.

“I care about rulers, inheritance and court politics.”

Choose Old World. Its dynasties, families, officials, events and order limits make human leadership central to the campaign.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“I want fantasy armies I can command directly.”

Choose Age of Wonders 4. It combines 4X expansion with turn-based tactical combat and persistent ruler customization.

“I want every faction to play by different rules.”

Choose Endless Legend. The Cultists, Roving Clans and Necrophages demonstrate how strongly faction identity can reshape expansion and warfare.

“I want the biggest science-fiction sandbox.”

Choose Stellaris. Species design, exploration, colonization, diplomacy, research and political events all operate at interstellar scale.

How to start without choosing the wrong kind of 4X

  1. Decide whether the setting is negotiable. Stay with Civilization VI, HUMANKIND, Old World or Millennia for historical play. Move to Age of Wonders 4 or Endless Legend for fantasy, or Stellaris and Master of Orion for space.
  2. Choose your preferred pace. Old World is the focused option when you want faster campaigns and strict turn priorities. Stellaris is the choice when a sprawling, emergent sandbox is the point. Civilization VI sits closest to the familiar middle ground.
  3. Decide how much combat control you want. Age of Wonders 4 and Endless Legend make battles a distinct part of play. Choose a more strategic empire-level experience if you prefer wars to remain integrated with broader planning.
  4. Decide whether identity should be fixed or built. Civilization VI gives you a recognizable civilization and leader. HUMANKIND lets identity change by era, while Age of Wonders 4, Endless Legend and Stellaris provide stronger customization or asymmetry.
  5. Decide whether people or systems should dominate. Old World puts dynasties and characters at the center. Stellaris emphasizes political events and species management. Civilization VI and Millennia focus more directly on the empire-building structure.

Final recommendation

For the closest overall substitute, play Civilization VI. For a historical twist, choose HUMANKIND; for dynasty-driven ancient politics, choose Old World; for fantasy tactics, choose Age of Wonders 4; for asymmetric factions and quests, choose Endless Legend; and for a galaxy-spanning sandbox, choose Stellaris. Millennia and Master of Orion are useful secondary picks when age progression or an approachable space campaign is your specific priority.
