The Benefits and Trade-Offs of Co-Locating Solar and Battery Storage

Co-locating solar panels and battery storage can let a project share a site and some infrastructure while storing electricity for use when solar output falls. That can improve flexibility and may reduce some costs, but it is not automatically cheaper or the best design: the result depends on the coupling configuration, grid rules, project costs and how the stored energy will be used.

What does co-locating solar and battery storage mean?

Co-location means placing a solar generation system and a battery energy storage system at the same site. It does not, by itself, specify how the equipment is electrically connected. A battery can be physically co-located with solar and still use either an AC-coupled or DC-coupled design.

The key operational idea is to move some energy through time: charge the battery when solar electricity is available, then discharge it later, such as after sunset. This can help align supply with demand and reduce some curtailment, depending on system controls and grid conditions. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) notes that storage is not perfectly efficient: some energy is lost in conversion and retrieval. DOE’s overview of solar integration and storage explains the basic trade-off.

What are the potential benefits?

Use solar energy when it is more useful

Solar production can be strongest when electricity demand or its value is lower. A battery can charge during that period and discharge later, including in the evening when solar output declines. This time-shifting can help a project better match its output to demand; the value depends on when charging and discharging are allowed and useful.

Manage fluctuations and some curtailed energy

With suitable sizing and control, storage can smooth short-term changes in solar output, such as those caused by passing clouds. A battery may also capture some energy that would otherwise be curtailed, but it cannot recover energy in every circumstance: there must be room to charge, and the system must be able to dispatch the stored electricity when needed. The National Laboratory of the Rockies (NLR) discusses a modeled DC-coupled configuration that eliminates PV clipping events; that is a result for the modeled setup, not a guarantee for every project. See NLR’s solar-plus-storage analysis.

Share some project infrastructure

A co-located project may share equipment and reduce duplicated site preparation, land acquisition, installation labor, permitting, interconnection work or developer overhead. These are possible cost channels, not assured savings: a project may still face substantial storage-specific equipment, engineering or grid-connection costs.

DOE’s Solar-Plus-Storage 101 gives a historical modeled example in which a co-located DC-coupled system cost 8% less and a co-located AC-coupled system cost 7% less than the separately sited comparison. Those percentages describe that analysis’s comparison, not current market prices, a quote or a universal saving.

Support critical loads during an outage, if designed for it

Solar paired with storage can provide backup for selected critical loads when the system is designed and configured to operate during an outage. Grid-connected solar systems do not necessarily keep supplying power when the grid goes down; backup operation depends on system design and controls. DOE covers this use case in its solar-and-storage basics.

Control when electricity reaches or comes from the grid

A battery can shift the timing of exports to the grid or electricity drawn from it. DOE describes this flexibility as a potential benefit for managing interconnection constraints. However, interconnection rules and processes that do not account for storage capabilities can also add delays and expense. The agency’s April 23, 2024 account of this issue is available in its interconnection success story.

How do AC-coupled and DC-coupled systems differ?

Coupling describes the electrical path between solar panels, the battery and the grid—not whether the equipment occupies the same site. In a DC-coupled arrangement, the solar array and battery connect on the direct-current side, sharing conversion equipment in the system design. In an AC-coupled arrangement, solar and battery equipment connect through their respective conversion paths on the alternating-current side. The chosen path affects equipment, energy flows and the circumstances in which energy may be clipped or converted.

There is no universal winner in the available evidence. The historical DOE cost comparison above reports different modeled reductions for co-located AC- and DC-coupled cases, but those figures are tied to its particular model and separated-site baseline. Evaluate the configuration against the project’s equipment, operating objectives, solar clipping profile and interconnection conditions rather than treating either coupling type as inherently cheaper.

Does co-locating solar and storage save money?

It can reduce duplicated infrastructure or development costs, but those potential savings do not settle the project’s overall economics. Value also depends on charging costs and sources, avoided curtailment, the services the battery provides, applicable market and interconnection rules, and local site constraints. Storage has conversion losses, and a battery’s capacity alone does not show how much useful electricity it can deliver over time.

Co-location is not always the most valuable siting choice. In its community-solar analysis, NLR notes that storage may be more economical at strategic points on the grid. That finding concerns the siting discussion in that analysis; it should not be generalized to every utility-scale or residential project. See NLR’s report on the technical potential and meaningful benefits of community solar.

What should you compare when choosing a system?

For a residential project, the broad product category is a solar battery storage system. Suitability depends on the home’s electrical design and intended use; the evidence here does not establish compatibility, installation requirements or a suitable model. For larger projects, design, engineering and interconnection choices require project-specific evaluation.

  • Coupling and conversion: Compare the AC- or DC-coupled electrical path and the equipment each design requires.
  • Power, energy and duration: Power capacity, measured in kilowatts (kW) or megawatts (MW), describes the rate of discharge. Energy capacity, measured in kilowatt-hours (kWh) or megawatt-hours (MWh), describes stored energy. Duration and dispatch goals help explain how long the battery can serve a purpose.
  • Intended service: Decide whether the priority is self-consumption, peak shifting, grid export, smoothing solar fluctuations or backup for critical loads.
  • Solar output and grid limits: Consider the project’s clipping or curtailment profile, export limits, interconnection requirements and local rules.
  • Charging rules and value: Establish whether grid charging is permitted or useful, and how the battery’s services will be compensated or otherwise valued.
  • Site and alternatives: Compare the costs of shared site and equipment with the possibility of placing storage elsewhere, where it may provide greater value.

For scale, DOE identifies the AES Lawai Solar Project in Kauai, Hawaii, as paired with a 100 MWh battery. That figure is the battery’s energy capacity reported on DOE’s solar-and-storage basics page; capacity alone does not establish the project’s performance or economics.
