Violet is now playable in Valve’s Deadlock as the fifth hero chosen through the City Never Sleeps community vote. Her release on October 16, 2026 adds an art-and-ink specialist whose kit steers bullets, lays movement-altering trails, sketches enemies for permanent rewards, and turns a large area into a dangerous ink arena.
Violet’s place in the City Never Sleeps vote
City Never Sleeps is unlocking six voted heroes in sequence. Violet is the fifth, following Rat King, Baba, Solomon and Deadman Danny. Nurse Harrow is the remaining sixth hero; Valve scheduled her unlock for October 20, 2026, at 2 p.m. PDT (10 p.m. BST).

The voting system moved hero selection into the pregame lobby. Votes from the winning team count double, a player’s first win of the day doubles their votes, and playing matches earns hero-priority tokens. Those changes make both match results and regular participation affect which heroes arrive next.

How Violet’s abilities work
Living Ink: guided bullets with cooldown rewards
Living Ink empowers Violet’s next three bullets. Each projectile can be steered while flying, giving her unusual control over shots after they leave the weapon. Empowered bullets deal increased bullet damage and add splash Spirit damage.
Hitting heroes with the empowered ammunition reduces Violet’s ability cooldowns and partially reduces item cooldowns. The ability consequently rewards accurate, aggressive shooting rather than being used only as a burst opener.
Flow State: a trail that helps allies and hinders enemies
Violet drags a brush forward, painting a traveling trail across the ground. Allied heroes can slide farther along it, while enemies on the trail are slowed and damaged.

Violet can reactivate Flow State to end the cast early. Doing so produces a larger Spirit-damage burst, creating a choice between maintaining the route for movement or cashing it out for immediate area damage.
Still Life: sustained targeting, stun and a permanent stat boost
Still Life makes Violet keep looking at a selected enemy while she sketches them and deals damage over time. The effect demands sustained targeting, so breaking line of sight or losing the target can prevent the sketch from being completed.
Completing the sketch stuns the enemy and deals extra damage, then drops a collectible sketch. When Violet picks it up, she receives a permanent stat increase determined by the hero she drew. That makes successful Still Life uses valuable beyond the immediate fight: a completed mark can improve Violet for the rest of the match.

Abstract Landscape: a large ink arena

Enemies that exit take Spirit damage, are silenced and are slowed. The ability can therefore divide a fight, protect allies within the area and punish opponents who try to escape it, while the vision obstruction changes how both teams approach the zone.

In practical terms, Violet combines ranged pick-off pressure with area control and team utility. Her strongest sequences depend on setup: guide Living Ink shots into heroes, use Flow State to shape a route or force a burst, maintain Still Life long enough to finish a sketch, and place Abstract Landscape where opponents must either fight inside its effects or suffer the exit penalty.

The Cursed Apple map overhaul
The update rebuilt the map as the New York-inspired Cursed Apple. Reworked or newly emphasized districts include Uptown, Times Square, Downtown, Central Park, Umbria University, the Stock Exchange, Seaport Dock and Old Fairfax Factories.
The broader patch also adds new neutral enemies, a rotating Broker merchant, shop changes and HUD changes. These systems arrive alongside the hero sequence, so Violet’s launch is part of a substantial game update rather than a character-only patch.

Valve’s update includes accessibility controls and a major communication pass. The announcement reported more than 15,000 new or updated ping lines, more than 700 to 1,500 pre-match conversation lines, and more than 10,000 newly added non-ping voice lines. The published figures use ranges for pre-match conversations, while the ping and non-ping totals are stated as more than the listed amounts.

Sandbox tools for testing
Players experimenting with Violet and the rest of the roster can use new sandbox features: bot recording and playback, a combat log, a real-time speed graph and a DPS meter. These tools make it easier to inspect projectile control, trail timing, sketch completion and damage changes without relying only on live-match observation.
What comes next
Nurse Harrow is the final scheduled City Never Sleeps hero after Violet. Until that October 20 release, Violet is the latest available result of the community vote and the fifth character in the six-hero rollout.
