A WordPress theme is the coordinated set of files that determines how a site looks, how its pages are structured, and which presentation features are available. Every theme has a required root-level style.css; templates generate page markup; the template hierarchy selects the right template for each request; and functions.php adds theme-specific behavior. Classic themes express templates mainly as PHP files, while block themes use HTML block templates and the Site Editor.

Understanding that anatomy tells you where to make a change, why a template was selected, and whether a feature belongs in a theme or a plugin. It also prevents common mistakes such as editing a parent theme directly or putting permanent site functionality in a file that disappears when the theme changes.

What a WordPress theme contains
The WordPress Developer Resources handbook describes themes as collections of files built with HTML, CSS, and PHP, with JavaScript, configuration, templates, parts, patterns, and other assets added as needed. A theme is therefore more than a stylesheet or a visual skin: it is the presentation layer that turns WordPress data into pages visitors can read.
A theme can control typography, colors, spacing, navigation, headers, footers, archives, individual posts, pages, comments, and the arrangement of dynamic content. It does not own the content stored in your database. Posts, pages, menus, and settings remain available when you switch themes, although their presentation changes.

The two architectures at a glance
| Area | Classic theme | Block theme |
|---|---|---|
| Template representation | PHP files containing HTML, PHP, and WordPress template tags | HTML files whose markup is made from WordPress blocks |
| Editing model | Code editing plus Customizer-era controls and other theme settings | Site Editor editing for templates, parts, styles, and site-wide areas |
| Required fallback | index.php |
templates/index.html |
| Reusable components | PHP includes such as header.php, footer.php, and files in template-parts/ |
Block template parts stored in parts/ |
| Configuration | Conventional PHP and CSS setup, with optional JavaScript and custom files | theme.json plus block settings and styles |
Block themes became available with WordPress 5.9. A block theme can be edited across site areas in the Site Editor, whereas a classic theme primarily relies on PHP templates, template tags, CSS, JavaScript, and code-oriented workflows.
style.css: identity and visual rules
style.css must be in the theme’s root directory. The official documentation calls it “a stylesheet (CSS) file required for every WordPress theme.” It serves two jobs: it supplies CSS rules for visual presentation and it carries the metadata WordPress displays in the Themes screen.
The theme header comment
The file begins with a CSS comment containing metadata. WordPress reads fields such as the theme name, description, author, version, license, and text domain. A minimal header can look like this:
/*
Theme Name: Harbor Notes
Theme URI: https://example.com/harbor-notes
Description: A small editorial theme.
Author: Example Studio
Version: 1.0.0
License: GNU General Public License v2 or later
License URI: https://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl-2.0.html
Text Domain: harbor-notes
*/
The example values identify the theme; they do not create functionality by themselves. Keep the comment at the top of the root stylesheet so WordPress can recognize the theme. After the header, add ordinary CSS or import additional styles according to the project’s build approach.
What belongs in the stylesheet
- Global typography, colors, spacing, and layout rules.
- Component styles for navigation, buttons, forms, cards, comments, and other theme markup.
- Responsive rules that adapt the layout to different viewport sizes.
- Editor-facing styles when the editing view should resemble the front end.
Loading a stylesheet is different from writing one. In a classic theme, the normal approach is to enqueue CSS from functions.php so WordPress can manage dependencies and versions. A block theme can also use styles declared through theme.json and block-support settings.
Templates: the files that create page structure
Templates define the document structure and output static and dynamic content. Static markup includes elements such as wrappers, headings, and navigation containers. Dynamic output comes from WordPress data: a post title, featured image, author, content, comments, or a list of posts.

Classic templates
Classic templates are PHP files. They combine HTML with PHP and template tags that retrieve or print WordPress data. A template may contain the loop that iterates through posts, call a header and footer, and choose different markup for an archive or a single entry. Common files include single.php for an individual post, page.php for a page, archive.php for archive views, and index.php as the required fallback.
Template names matter because WordPress uses them as signals. Renaming a file can change when it is selected, while adding a more specific file can change only the requests that match it.
Block templates
Block themes store templates as HTML files in the root-level templates/ directory. Their markup represents blocks rather than PHP template tags. The Site Editor can open these templates visually, while developers can edit the HTML directly when they need precise control.
templates/index.html is the block-theme fallback. Other HTML templates can target more specific request types. A block template can include template parts, query loops, navigation, post-content blocks, and block-level style settings without embedding PHP in the file.
How the template hierarchy chooses a file
When a request arrives, WordPress identifies what kind of query it represents, checks candidate template filenames in the documented order, and uses the first matching file. If no specific candidate exists, it falls back to the theme’s index template. This is the template hierarchy.
The selection process
- WordPress determines the query context, such as a front page, a blog index, a single post, a page, an author archive, a date archive, a category, a tag, or a search result.
- It looks for the most specific filename supported by that context.
- If that file is absent, it tries progressively broader candidates.
- It uses the fallback index template when no more specific template is present.
The same principle applies to both architectures. Classic themes use PHP filenames; block themes use corresponding HTML files in templates/. A child theme’s matching file takes precedence over the parent theme’s file, which lets you customize selected views without copying the entire parent.

Illustrative candidates
| Request context | Typical classic candidates | Block-theme location |
|---|---|---|
| Individual post | A post-specific template, then single.php, then singular.php, then index.php |
Matching HTML template in templates/, ending at templates/index.html |
| Static page | A page-specific template, then page.php, then broader singular and index fallbacks |
Matching page template in templates/, then the block fallback |
| Category, tag, or other archive | A taxonomy-specific template, then archive.php, then index.php |
Matching archive HTML template, then templates/index.html |
| Search results | search.php, then index.php |
A matching search template, then the block fallback |
The exact candidate sequence depends on the query type. If a page is not displaying the markup you expected, identify its query context first, then inspect the hierarchy for that context rather than editing a random file.
Template parts and reusable pieces
Headers, footers, sidebars, navigation areas, and repeated content sections are template parts. Keeping them separate prevents the same markup from being copied into every template and makes a site-wide change easier to apply.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsClassic partials
Classic themes commonly provide header.php, footer.php, and sidebar.php. Additional partials usually live in template-parts/. Templates include these files through WordPress functions, so a single header edit can affect posts, pages, and archives that call it.
Block template parts
Block themes store reusable parts in parts/. A header or footer is represented by block markup and inserted into templates as a template-part block. The Site Editor exposes these parts for visual editing, while the files remain available for code-based workflows.
functions.php: theme-scoped behavior
functions.php is loaded for the active theme. It can register hooks, enable theme support, enqueue styles and scripts, define reusable functions, register menus or widget areas in classic projects, and add other behavior that belongs to the theme.
Typical responsibilities
- Enqueueing CSS and JavaScript with WordPress’s dependency and version system.
- Declaring support for features such as post thumbnails or HTML5 markup.
- Registering navigation locations and other presentation-oriented areas.
- Adding filters and actions that adjust theme output.
- Defining helper functions used by the theme’s templates.
A child theme can have its own functions.php and add code without editing the parent file. Both files participate in the active setup, so a child file is not a replacement that automatically removes the parent’s behavior.

Know what does not belong there
Features that must remain available after a theme switch are better implemented as a plugin. Examples include a custom content type, a business-critical integration, or a site-wide data feature. If such code lives only in functions.php, changing themes can remove the feature from the site’s runtime even though its data remains stored.
Assets and common folder organization
CSS, JavaScript, images, fonts, and other front-end resources are assets. Classic themes often place them under assets/, while custom PHP helpers commonly live under inc/. Templates may sit in the theme root, with reusable pieces in template-parts/.
Block themes require templates/ for templates and parts/ for template parts. They may also include patterns/ for reusable block patterns, styles/ for style variations, and theme.json for settings and global styles. These additional folders are project choices unless a particular feature requires them.

A theme does not need every folder shown. Do not create empty directories merely to match a diagram; organize files around the architecture and features the project actually uses.

Block themes commonly use theme.json to declare editor settings, supported features, typography, color palettes, spacing, and global styles. This configuration gives blocks and the Site Editor a shared design vocabulary. It can reduce one-off CSS and help keep editor output consistent with the front end.
Classic themes can also adopt selected modern configuration features, but their core structure remains PHP-template based. Treat theme.json as configuration for supported WordPress capabilities, not as a replacement for every template or stylesheet.

Where to edit a theme safely
Block theme: use the Site Editor first
- Open the WordPress dashboard and go to Appearance followed by Editor (the label can vary slightly by WordPress version).
- Choose the area you need: Templates for page structures, Patterns for reusable designs, or Styles for global typography, colors, and layout.
- Make the change, preview it in the editor, and save the relevant template or part.
- For a code-level change, edit the corresponding file in a development workflow and test the result before deploying it.
Classic theme: identify the file before editing
- Determine whether the issue is global styling, a reusable part, a single post, a page, or an archive.
- Use the template hierarchy to locate the most specific file that can handle that request.
- Change the child theme when one exists. If there is no child theme, create one before making persistent code edits to a parent theme.
- Use Appearance followed by Theme File Editor only when that interface is enabled and you have a recoverable backup. A development or staging copy is safer for substantial work.
- Clear relevant caches and test representative pages, not just the page used while editing.
Edits made through the Site Editor can be stored as site-level customizations, while direct file edits change the theme package. Keep track of which method you used so a theme update or a later deployment does not unexpectedly overwrite the change.
Common problems and how to diagnose them
The change appears on some pages but not others
You probably edited a template that does not handle every query context. Compare a single post, a static page, an archive, and the front page, then trace each one through its own hierarchy. Move genuinely shared markup into a header, footer, or template part.
The stylesheet is not loading
Check that style.css is in the theme root and that its header comment is valid. Then verify that the stylesheet is enqueued or otherwise included by the theme. Browser caching and a stale asset version can make a correct edit appear ineffective.
A parent-theme update removed a customization
Direct edits to a parent theme are vulnerable to replacement during updates. Reapply the change in a child theme, a custom block template, or an appropriate plugin, depending on whether the code is presentation-specific or site functionality.
The editor and front end look different
Check whether editor styles, theme.json settings, and front-end CSS describe the same design tokens. A block can have editor support without the front-end stylesheet covering the resulting markup, and custom CSS can override global styles unexpectedly.
A PHP edit causes a fatal error
Restore the last known-good file from version control or a backup, then test the change on staging. Keep PHP syntax errors out of production by validating small changes before publishing and by avoiding the dashboard editor for complex modifications.

Quick Recap
The essential mental model
style.cssidentifies the theme and supplies core visual rules.- Templates decide the markup and dynamic output for a page.
- The template hierarchy decides which template handles a request.
- Template parts keep repeated structures reusable.
functions.phpsupplies behavior that belongs to the active theme.- Plugins should hold features that must survive a theme change.
- Classic themes center on PHP templates; block themes center on HTML block templates,
theme.json, and the Site Editor.
