For most bedrooms, buy a window unit if you can install one. The Friedrich Chill Premier Inverter CCV08A10A is the best choice in RTINGS’ 2026 bedroom roundup, because it pairs steady, quiet overnight cooling with reasonable efficiency. If a window is not an option, the Hisense Tower HIAP0825TWD is the better portable for a bedroom, and the Midea Duo MAP12S1TBL is the stronger cooler for larger rooms. Budget buyers in a small room can consider the Frigidaire FFRA051WAE (window) or the SereneLife SLPAC8 (portable), with the trade-offs explained below.
How to size a bedroom air conditioner
RTINGS gives approximate cooling capacity by floor area. These are sizing guidelines rather than fixed rules, so treat them as a starting point and check the room’s conditions before you buy.

| Room floor area | Approximate capacity (RTINGS guidance) |
|---|---|
| Up to 150 ft² | 5,000 Btu/hr |
| Up to 350 ft² | 8,000 Btu/hr |
| Up to 450 ft² | 10,000 Btu/hr |
| Up to 550 ft² | 12,000 Btu/hr |
Bigger is not automatically better in a bedroom. An oversized unit can run in short bursts, and compressor cycling is one of the noise sources RTINGS flags as a problem for light sleepers.
Judge capacity by tested output, not the box
Two of the picks show a gap between advertised and measured cooling. RTINGS tested the Friedrich CCV08A10A at 5,000 Btu/hr, against an advertised 8,000 Btu/hr. It tested the Frigidaire FHWC054TE1 at just over 3,500 Btu/hr, against an advertised 5,000 Btu/hr. Those are RTINGS’ lab results, not guarantees for every unit or home. For a 150 ft² bedroom, the tested figures are the more useful guide to whether a unit can keep up.

Window or portable?
- Window units generally have less impact on your electric bill than a comparable portable, according to RTINGS. They also keep the floor clear. The cost is installation: you need a window that the unit fits, and the heavier models are hard to mount alone.
- Portable units work where a window installation is not practical, such as rentals or windows that cannot take a unit. They take up bedroom floor space and are less efficient than a comparable window unit. Dual-hose and single-hose designs differ in output and efficiency, and the portable picks below note which type each one is.
The six picks
Best bedroom window AC: Friedrich Chill Premier Inverter CCV08A10A
This is the top pick for a bedroom that can take a window unit. It is an inverter model, which RTINGS associates with steadier temperature and humidity and lower energy use than fixed-speed units. RTINGS reports quiet, efficient, steady overnight cooling. Compressor noise from the outdoor section can still reach the room, the installation is challenging, and the unit weighs over 50 lb, so plan for a second person and check the window before buying. Its 8,000 Btu/hr rating is an advertised figure; RTINGS measured 5,000 Btu/hr.
Mid-range bedroom AC: Frigidaire FHWC054TE1
This is a non-inverter window unit with an advertised 5,000 Btu/hr and 150 ft² coverage, which suits a smaller bedroom. RTINGS measured just over 3,500 Btu/hr. Its fixed-speed cycling can be noisier and less efficient than the Friedrich, and RTINGS says the room may feel somewhat damp. RTINGS says it is compatible with a MERV-14 filter; confirm the specific filter product with the manufacturer before you buy one.
Rank #2
- 𝗢𝗻𝗲 𝗙𝗮𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗔𝗹𝗹 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗡𝗲𝗲𝗱𝘀: From a gentle breeze to a powerful wind, it adapts to your everyday needs with up to 28 ft/s airflow and a wide oscillation angle to deliver fast, whole-room cooling
- 𝗤𝘂𝗶𝗲𝘁 𝗦𝗹𝗲𝗲𝗽 𝗔𝗹𝗹 𝗡𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁: Perfect bedroom fan with a near-silent noise level on low speed. Includes a 12-hour timer for all-night comfort and is ideal for light sleepers, babies, and pets
- 𝗔𝘂𝘁𝗼-𝗔𝗱𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗥𝗼𝗼𝗺: Use Auto Mode for automatic fan speed adjustments according to room temperature. Built-in temperature sensor automatically adapts airflow to match your environment, keeping you cool without the temperature getting too cold or too warm
- 𝗦𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗢𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: 5 fan speeds and 4 fan modes (Normal, Turbo, Sleep, and Auto) give you the ideal airflow for any situation
- 𝗥𝗲𝗺𝗼𝘁𝗲 𝗜𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗱 & 𝗘𝗮𝘀𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝗖𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗻: Adjust settings from bed or the couch with the remote, and when needed, simply remove the back grille for a quick cleaning. The slim design fits perfectly in any bedroom, living room, or office
Budget bedroom AC: Frigidaire FFRA051WAE
This is a non-inverter window unit with an advertised 5,000 Btu/hr and 250 ft² coverage. It uses mechanical controls and has no remote, and RTINGS describes it as simple and relatively light. The trade-off is noise: the fan can disturb noise-sensitive sleepers at full speed. Run it on a lower fan setting at night if sound is a concern.

Best portable bedroom AC: Midea Duo MAP12S1TBL
This is a dual-hose inverter portable rated at 10,000 Btu/hr (DOE) with advertised coverage of 550 ft². RTINGS praises its cooling output and low indoor noise. Its efficiency is lower than a comparable window unit, and the footprint is bulky, so it suits a large bedroom with space to spare rather than a compact one.
Rank #3
- Three-in-One Unit: Our 14,000 BTU ASHRAE (10,200 BTU SACC) air conditioner also functions as a dehumidifier & fan. This portable air conditioner has a full function remote control & top mounted control panel with LED display
- Portable AC: Take this personal air conditioner (16.5” x 14.06” x 27.09) in rooms up to 700 sq. ft. Stay cool in the hot summer months and sleep well with this BLACK+DECKER ac unit for bedroom
- Smart AC with Voice Control: This smart air conditioner allows Wi-Fi connectivity and can be controlled using our mobile app available on iOS and Google Play stores, and voice controlled by Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant
- Follow Me Remote: Our portable AC unit comes with a full function remote control that features a FOLLOW ME function, which allows the remote to act as a thermostat for precise temperature control
- Installation Kit: When it comes to fans that blow cold air, this indoor ac unit includes an easy-to-install window kit. A large, vented airflow outlet ushers in cool air
Mid-range portable AC: Hisense Tower HIAP0825TWD
This is a dual-hose inverter portable rated at 8,000 Btu/hr (DOE) with advertised coverage of 350 ft². RTINGS describes it as quieter than most portable units, with a slim footprint and remote and app controls. Two caveats: availability is limited, and the price varies, so check the current listing before you plan around it.
Budget portable AC: SereneLife SLPAC8
This is a single-hose, non-inverter portable rated at 4,000 Btu/hr (DOE) with advertised coverage of 215 ft². It is the cheapest route to a portable in a small room, but its cooling output is lower and its efficiency is poor relative to higher-capacity units. RTINGS also notes occasional noise bursts above 78 dBA. It includes a remote and a dehumidification mode.
Rank #4
- BEST FOR SMALL ROOMS: Cools up to 150 sq ft efficiently with 5,000 BTU cooling power. Ideal for bedrooms, home offices, dorm rooms, workshops, and studio apartments. Compact 16.4" W x 13.4" D x 12.6" H design fits tight spaces.
- QUIET OPERATION - Quieter than many older window AC units, with 2 cooling modes (low 52 dBA for nighttime, high 56 dBA for rapid cooling) and 2 fan speeds for personalized comfort. Simple mechanical controls mean no annoying digital beeps.
- SIMPLE, RELIABLE MECHANICAL CONTROLS: Easy-to-use dials for temperature and fan speed—no Wi-Fi, apps or complex setup required. 10 temperature settings let you dial in your perfect comfort level. Auto restart after power outages.
- LOW MAINTENANCE & ENERGY SMART: No manual draining under normal conditions. Washable, reusable filter for easy care. Low 440W power draw helps reduce energy costs compared to older, inefficient units.
- EASY DIY INSTALLATION: Fixed chassis installs easily and fits double-hung windows 27.125"–36" wide and 13.375" high minimum. EZ Mount kit with foam insulation included. Backed by 1-year GE limited warranty for peace of mind.

“Quiet” means different things for different sleepers. Three sources matter most at night:
- Compressor cycling: units that switch on and off produce a noticeable change in sound. Inverter units vary their speed instead, which RTINGS associates with steadier operation.
- Fan noise at full speed: the Frigidaire FFRA051WAE can disturb light sleepers when it runs flat out.
- Audible inverter chatter and outdoor noise: some inverter units produce a faint whine, and window units transmit outdoor compressor sound. Check how the unit sounds at its intended setting, not only its rated figure.
What the efficiency numbers mean
ENERGY STAR’s published results give an efficiency comparison for two window units that are not among the six picks. The Midea MAW06V1UBL, a 6,000 Btu/hr window unit, lists a CEER of 15.1 and annual energy use of 298.0 kWh/year. The LG LW6023IVSM, also 6,000 Btu/hr, lists a CEER of 15.5 and 290.3 kWh/year. CEER is the Combined Energy Efficiency Ratio; a higher number means more cooling per unit of energy. These examples show how to read the metric, but they do not show that any of the six picks carries the same certification or was tested under the same conditions.
Quick Recap
Before you buy
- Measure the bedroom’s floor area and match it to the capacity band above. Use the tested figure where RTINGS gives one.
- For a window unit, confirm the window’s size and sash type fit the model. Check the weight before you buy, especially for the Friedrich at over 50 lb.
- Confirm the electrical requirements for the model against its documentation, including the outlet and circuit it needs.
- If you plan to add a support bracket for a heavy window unit, confirm it is compatible with that exact model first.
- Check each listing for current status. A GE Profile product page has shown a model as no longer manufactured and out of stock online, so a listing can change after an article is written.
- Prices and stock change often. Prices are not listed here, so check the current price and return terms at the retailer before you buy.
