It can protect a phone during kayaking, snorkeling, rainy hikes, water-park visits, beach days, and accidental drops into a pool. But “waterproof” is not a single level of protection: an IP67 pouch rated for 1 meter of water for 30 minutes is not equivalent to an IP68 case rated for 2 meters for an hour.
We reviewed the five strongest options from Travel + Leisure’s testing of 10 waterproof phone pouches and cases. The test included a five-minute tissue-paper submersion check, closure and touchscreen evaluations, photography and calling tests, and real-world use during activities such as kayaking, snorkeling, rainy hikes, and travel.

1. Case-Mate Pelican Marine IP68 Waterproof Phone Pouch
Best overall
The Pelican Marine is the easiest recommendation for most people because it combines a useful fit, buoyant construction, a strap, and solid real-world durability. It accommodates phones up to 6.7 inches and measures 4.53 by 8.46 inches. Its IP68 rating is listed for submersion up to 3.3 feet for 30 minutes.
#1 Best Overall
- Cruise-Ready IPX8 Waterproof Protection: Fully sealed IPX8 waterproof pouch protects your phone from splashes, rain, pool water and beach sand—perfect for cruises, pool decks, water rides, beach days and tropical excursions.
- Touch-Friendly Screen for Easy Use: Clear and responsive touch window lets you use your phone, take photos/videos, check maps or read messages without removing it from the pouch—ideal for capturing moments during cruise trips.
- Upgraded 8.9" Universal Fit — Works with Most Phones with Case On: The roomy 8.9-inch inner space fits nearly all iPhones and large Android phones even with protective cases installed. No need to remove your case before sealing—more convenient for travel and everyday use.
- Secure Double-Lock Seal for All Water Activities: Reinforced dual-lock system prevents water, sand, dust and dirt from entering—reliable for beach outings, snorkeling, kayaking, water parks and cruise excursions.
- Slim, Lightweight & Travel-Easy — 2-Pack for Families: Flat, compact and easy to pack into pockets, lanyards or beach bags. Comes in a 2-pack, perfect for couples, friends or keeping a backup during travel and cruise vacations.
During three months of frequent pool and rain use, testers found the pouch durable and effective at keeping the phone from sinking. The floating design is particularly valuable around docks, boats, pools, and rivers, where recovering a dropped phone quickly matters as much as keeping water out.
The main limitation is underwater operation. The touchscreen was not responsive underwater, so testers relied on the phone’s camera timer rather than trying to tap the screen after submerging it. The pouch can also be a tight fit with a large phone case or accessories. Case-Mate says larger phones may require removing the case.
- Best features: floats, includes a strap, fits phones up to 6.7 inches, durable in extended use.
- Watch out for: unreliable underwater touchscreen operation and limited room for bulky cases.
2. Nite Ize RunOff Waterproof Phone Case
Best runner-up
The Nite Ize RunOff is a more structured pouch for users who want a secure zipper-style closure, detachable adjustable lanyard, interior card holder, and clear front and back windows. It fits phones up to 3.85 inches wide by 6.65 inches tall and uses RF-welded TPU construction with a TRU Zip zipper.
Its IP67 rating means protection against submersion to 1 meter for up to 30 minutes. Testing found it reliable in rain and saltwater, making it a good travel option for wet-weather activities and beach trips. The clear windows allow calls, texting, and photography in normal conditions, although glare and reflections can affect photos at some angles.
The closure demands careful use. The slider must travel completely to the end stop; a zipper that looks closed but has not reached the end may not seal. Nite Ize recommends periodic immersion testing and provides a lubricant wipe for zipper maintenance. If bubbles escape during a test, stop using the pouch until the problem is resolved.
The edges feel somewhat rough, and the pouch does not offer the same obvious flotation advantage as the Pelican or Case-Mate floating models.
- Best features: dependable zipper design, card storage, detachable lanyard, front and back windows.
- Watch out for: incomplete zipper closure, rough edges, and the need for regular maintenance.
3. CASETiFY Bounce Extreme
Most durable
The Bounce Extreme is the pick for users who want a hard case rather than a loose universal pouch. It is listed for the iPhone 14 Pro, iPhone 14 Pro Max, iPhone 15 Pro, and iPhone 15 Pro Max. Protection includes an IP68 rating to 6.6 feet for one hour, 9.8-foot drop protection, and an included strap.

Testers used it during extended lazy-river and water-park sessions and found the phone stayed dry. After weeks of use, the case showed only minor scratches, which supports its appeal for rough travel and active holidays.
There are two important trade-offs. First, it does not float. A phone dropped from a kayak or boat can still disappear even if the case keeps water out. Second, the snug fit reduced screen sensitivity when wet. The case is also limited to specific iPhone models, so it is not a practical choice for Android phones or unsupported iPhones.
- Best features: strong drop protection, deeper and longer listed water protection, durable construction.
- Watch out for: model-specific compatibility, reduced wet-screen sensitivity, and no flotation.
4. Case-Mate Waterproof Phone Pouch
Best floating pouch
This Case-Mate pouch is a less expensive alternative to the Pelican Marine and is designed around one central benefit: keeping a phone afloat. It fits phones up to 6.7 inches, measures 0.53 by 4.53 by 8.27 inches, includes a strap, and carries an IP68 rating for up to 3.3 feet of water for 30 minutes.
In testing, it floated consistently and kept tissue dry during a 15-minute underwater test. That makes it a sensible choice for pool use, paddleboarding, beach trips, and other situations where a dropped phone is likely to land in water rather than on a hard surface.
The lower section of the touchscreen was less sensitive, and a bulky phone case made loading the pouch more difficult. You may need to remove an existing case to achieve a proper fit and reliable seal. As with most sealed pouches, underwater photography is easier when the camera timer or physical buttons can be configured before entry.
It was listed at $20 from Case-Mate and around $19 from Target or Amazon when checked, though retailer pricing changes frequently.
- Best features: consistent flotation, low price, large-phone compatibility, included strap.
- Watch out for: tighter fit with thick cases and reduced touchscreen sensitivity near the bottom of the window.
5. Stash 7 Waterproof Phone Pouch with Lanyard
Best lanyard
The Stash 7 Waterpocket is aimed at travelers who want to keep a phone attached and accessible. It accommodates phones up to 7.5 inches, includes a strap, and uses a nylon body with a dual seal: a ziplock closure followed by a Velcro flap. Travel + Leisure lists IPX8 protection to 4.9 feet for 30 minutes.

- Test Before Use : First Fill with paper towel in the waterproof phone bag, squeeze air before Sealed; Then Submerge underwater for about 15 minutes. Last Downside the top mount to take out the object, avoid water going into the case. High quality product from Brand "Famoby"!
The dual-seal design kept tissue dry during testing, but it was difficult to open and close. That extra effort may be worthwhile when the phone will stay in the pouch for a long time, but it is inconvenient if you need to answer calls, take photos, or check directions repeatedly. Solo travelers should consider this carefully because opening the pouch can require both hands.

How we evaluated waterproof phone pouches
The testing process began with 10 products. Reviewers placed tissue paper inside each pouch, submerged it for five minutes, and checked for leaks. They also assessed how easy each closure was to secure, whether the phone could be used for calls and texts, how well the touchscreen worked, and whether photos were practical through the clear window.
Real-world testing covered kayaking, snorkeling, rainy hikes, errands, pools, water parks, and travel. Testing began over two weeks and continued for as long as six months to reveal wear and changes in performance. The duration was not identical for every product: the Pelican, for example, was specifically used for three months, while the Bounce Extreme was described as being used for weeks.
What to check before buying
1. Match the rating to the activity
IP67 generally indicates resistance to immersion up to 1 meter for 30 minutes under specified test conditions. IP68 indicates a higher level, but the actual depth and duration vary by product. The Bounce Extreme’s listed limit of 6.6 feet for one hour is not the same as the 3.3-foot, 30-minute limit listed for the Case-Mate pouches.

Neither rating means the pouch is suitable for unlimited diving, high-pressure water, or permanent submersion. Use the manufacturer’s stated depth and time as a boundary, not a target.
2. Measure the phone with its case
Measure the phone, camera bump, case, wallet attachment, and other accessories together. A pouch can fit a bare phone but fail to close properly around a rugged case. If the closure does not reach its full locking position, do not submerge it.

3. Decide whether flotation matters
Water resistance and flotation are separate features. The Pelican Marine and Case-Mate floating pouch are designed to stay on the surface. The CASETiFY Bounce Extreme is water-resistant but does not float.
4. Test the pouch before risking your phone
- Inspect the window, seams, zipper, ziplock, and flap for damage or debris.
- Put dry tissue paper or a paper towel inside the empty pouch.
- Close the pouch exactly as directed.
- Submerge it in a basin for the product’s recommended test period.
- Dry the outside before opening it and check the paper for moisture.
Repeat the test after long storage, heavy use, or any visible damage. For the Nite Ize RunOff, confirm that the TRU Zip slider reaches the end stop and follow the brand’s lubrication guidance.
Common problems with waterproof phone pouches
Touchscreens may fail underwater. Water pressure, the pouch film, and the phone’s own water-detection behavior can make tapping unreliable. Set a timer before submerging the phone and use physical buttons when possible.
A sealed window can hurt photos. Clear TPU may introduce glare, reflections, or distortion. Keep the window clean and change the angle if bright light is reflecting into the lens.
A closure can look shut without being sealed. This is the most avoidable failure mode. Do not rely on appearance alone; run the slider or locking mechanism to its required endpoint.
Waterproof does not mean drop-proof. A soft pouch protects against water but may offer little impact protection. Conversely, the Bounce Extreme has strong drop protection but still needs to be retrieved quickly because it does not float.

The JOTO Waterproof Phone Pouch IPX8 was inexpensive and was available as a two-pack for under $10 when checked. However, testers found water droplets inside after full submersion, needed excessive pressure to use the touchscreen, and had concerns about long-term durability. Those issues kept it out of the main recommendations.
FAQ
Are waterproof phone pouches really waterproof?
They can resist water when correctly closed and used within their stated limits, but “waterproof” is not unlimited protection. Check the exact IP rating, depth, and time, and test the empty pouch with tissue paper before putting your phone inside.
Which waterproof phone pouch floats?
The Case-Mate Pelican Marine IP68 pouch and the Case-Mate Waterproof Phone Pouch are the floating options in this roundup. The CASETiFY Bounce Extreme does not float, despite its stronger listed drop and water protection.
Can you use a phone’s touchscreen underwater in a pouch?
Sometimes, but it is unreliable. Testing found the Pelican’s touchscreen did not respond underwater and the Case-Mate pouch had reduced sensitivity near its lower section. Set a camera timer or prepare the phone before submerging it.
Should I remove my phone case before using a waterproof pouch?
Possibly. Thick cases, camera covers, wallet attachments, and other accessories can prevent the pouch from closing correctly. Check the pouch’s internal dimensions and test the seal with tissue paper; remove the case if the fit is tight.
The Bottom Line
The Case-Mate Pelican Marine IP68 Waterproof Phone Pouch is the best all-around choice because it combines a large fit, flotation, a strap, and dependable protection in repeated wet use. Choose the Nite Ize RunOff for its structured zipper and card storage, the CASETiFY Bounce Extreme for impact protection on supported iPhones, the Case-Mate Waterproof Phone Pouch for an affordable floating design, or the Stash 7 when a lanyard and hands-free carry matter most.
Whichever model you buy, confirm the fit, close every seal completely, and perform a tissue-paper test before exposing your phone to water.
