NordVPN is the strongest all-around Kodi pick in Gizmodo’s October 2026 device tests, while IPVanish leads Top10VPN’s separate Kodi ranking. ExpressVPN is the better fit when access to a location-sensitive add-on is your priority, Proton VPN is the privacy-and-free-plan choice, and Private Internet Access is a reasonable fifth option if its app supports your device. Results differ by tester, platform, protocol, server and add-on, so no VPN can promise the same speed or access on every Kodi installation.
Kodi has no built-in VPN setting. You normally install the VPN’s official app on the same device, connect before opening Kodi, and use a compatible router only when the device lacks a suitable app. The setup and test evidence below comes from Gizmodo’s October 2026 comparison, Top10VPN’s guide updated July 3, 2026, and Security.org’s setup guide updated September 10, 2026.

Kodi does not include a VPN switch
As Security.org explains, Kodi itself does not provide a built-in VPN setting. A VPN encrypts traffic from the operating system or router; Kodi remains the media-center application running above that connection. The normal sequence is to install the provider’s official app, connect, and then launch Kodi.

It can protect the connection and change the apparent location
A VPN can hide your public IP address from the services you contact and route traffic through a server in another country. That may help a legitimate service whose catalogue varies by location, but an add-on must still support the content and region you select. A successful connection in one add-on does not prove that another add-on will work.
It does not make copyright infringement legal
Kodi is free and open source, and its official repository’s add-ons are legal. Unlicensed streams from unofficial third-party add-ons may violate copyright law. A VPN does not grant permission to watch or redistribute those streams, and this guide is about legitimate services and add-ons.
How the 2026 comparisons were conducted
Top10VPN says it evaluated 59 VPNs over more than 30,000 testing hours. Its July 3, 2026 guide recommends IPVanish, ExpressVPN and Proton VPN for Kodi, with IPVanish at the top of its Kodi ranking. It reports Kodi 21.3 Omega in its testing and says its three recommended services showed no IP leaks in those tests. These are Top10VPN’s measurements, not independent replication.
Gizmodo’s October 2026 article tested Kodi add-ons and performance on Fire TV Stick and Windows. Its Pluto TV test used legal, free add-ons. The speed-loss percentages below describe that test setup; your result will vary with broadband capacity, Wi-Fi, server distance, protocol, device load and VPN version.
1. NordVPN: best overall for most Kodi users
NordVPN is Gizmodo’s overall Kodi choice after its Fire TV Stick and Windows testing. Gizmodo measured a 3.0% speed loss on Fire TV Stick and 7.8% on Windows. In the same Pluto TV test, the add-on worked while connected through NordVPN.
Why it stands out
- The lowest Fire TV Stick loss among the services listed in Gizmodo’s results.
- A Windows result tied with ExpressVPN in that test at 7.8% loss.
- Successful access to the legal Pluto TV Kodi add-on used by Gizmodo.
- A native Fire TV app was available at the time of Gizmodo’s guide.
Who should choose it
Choose NordVPN first if Kodi runs on a Fire TV Stick or Windows PC and you want a balanced starting point rather than a free plan. Connect to a nearby server before opening Kodi; a nearby endpoint usually gives the device the best chance of preserving throughput, although it cannot eliminate congestion or Wi-Fi problems.

What the test does not prove
Gizmodo’s numbers do not establish a universal speed ranking. They do not predict performance on Android TV, Raspberry Pi, LibreELEC, a different VPN protocol or a distant server. Confirm the current app listing and subscription terms before paying.

Top10VPN specifically highlights ExpressVPN for geo-restricted Kodi add-ons. Gizmodo recorded 4.6% loss on Fire TV Stick and 7.8% on Windows, and Pluto TV worked in its legal add-on test.
Where it fits best
ExpressVPN is a practical pick when your legitimate service is available only in selected countries and you need a straightforward app on a mainstream Kodi device. Select a server in the service’s supported country, connect, and then start Kodi. If the add-on still shows a region error, disconnect and try another server in the same country; the add-on may identify VPN ranges or require an account whose billing region matches.
Device and privacy checks
Gizmodo had a Fire TV app available at the time of its comparison. Before purchase, verify the current Android TV, Windows, Fire OS or router instructions for your exact model. The cited articles do not provide a common, current simultaneous-device limit or a single comparable privacy-audit schedule, so consult the provider’s present policy rather than inferring it from a speed test.
3. IPVanish: Top10VPN’s highest-rated Kodi service
Top10VPN’s July 2026 ranking places IPVanish first with a 9.4/10 overall Kodi rating and a 9.8/10 speed score. Its reported speed loss was 4% on nearby servers and 12% averaged across the 112 countries it measured.
Interpreting those numbers
The 4% figure is a nearby-server result; the 12% figure is an average across many countries. They answer different questions. If your Kodi service is in or near your own country, the nearby result is more relevant. If you routinely connect to distant locations, expect the broader average to be a better warning, while still recognizing that your ISP route and chosen protocol can produce a different result.

Best use case
IPVanish suits readers who value Top10VPN’s Kodi-specific scoring and want a paid service rather than a capped free plan. Top10VPN’s results should be treated as editorial measurements from its test environment, not as a promise of a particular buffer rate. Confirm that the current app supports your device, especially if Kodi runs on a Raspberry Pi or LibreELEC installation where a manual configuration may be required.
4. Proton VPN: privacy-oriented and useful on a free plan
Proton VPN is Top10VPN’s named free option. Gizmodo measured 5.3% Fire TV Stick loss and 10.2% Windows loss. Its Pluto TV test produced a region error, so the free or paid connection should not be assumed to work with every location-sensitive add-on.
Free-plan trade-offs
Gizmodo reports that Proton VPN’s free plan allows unlimited data, but it did not perform as well for the location-sensitive test discussed in that guide. Unlimited data avoids a monthly viewing quota; it does not guarantee a particular country, streaming service or server load. If your goal is ordinary privacy while using legal local sources, that distinction may be acceptable. If you need a specific catalogue, check the available free locations and upgrade terms first.
Fire TV requirement
Gizmodo notes a minimum Fire OS version for Proton VPN’s Fire TV app but does not establish that requirement for every current release. Check the live Amazon app listing and Proton’s installation instructions for your exact Fire TV model before subscribing. On unsupported hardware, router installation may be the only practical route.
5. Private Internet Access: a fifth option, with slower results in Gizmodo’s test
Private Internet Access completed the five-service set because it had a Fire TV app at the time of Gizmodo’s guide and gives readers another paid option to evaluate. Gizmodo measured 7.9% loss on Fire TV Stick and 12.7% on Windows, the highest losses among the services shown in that comparison. Its Pluto TV test returned a region error.
When it still makes sense
A speed-loss ranking is not the same as a universal quality ranking. If the service supports your device, offers a server in the country required by your legitimate add-on, and meets your privacy and budget requirements, it may still be workable. Test during your own viewing hours and keep the provider’s cancellation conditions in mind.

Who should look elsewhere
If your Fire TV Stick has limited bandwidth and you are choosing solely from Gizmodo’s measured performance, NordVPN or ExpressVPN had lower losses in that test. If you need Pluto TV specifically, Gizmodo’s result favors NordVPN and ExpressVPN over Private Internet Access.

Fire TV Stick
- Open the Fire TV home screen and search the official app store for your chosen VPN.
- Install the provider’s verified app, sign in, and allow the requested VPN connection.
- Select a nearby server, or the country required by your legitimate add-on, and tap Connect.
- Wait for the connected indicator, then open Kodi and start the add-on.
- If Kodi buffers, test a nearer server before changing video quality or blaming the VPN.
Gizmodo’s Fire TV results were: NordVPN 3.0% loss, ExpressVPN 4.6%, Proton VPN 5.3% and Private Internet Access 7.9%. The figures are not interchangeable with Windows results. App-store availability and minimum Fire OS versions can change.
Windows
- Download the VPN app from the provider’s official website, not an APK mirror or third-party repackaging.
- Install it, sign in, and enable the app’s kill switch if you want Kodi traffic blocked whenever the VPN disconnects.
- Connect to a nearby server and confirm the Windows status shows an active VPN connection.
- Launch Kodi only after the connection is established.
- If an add-on reports a region error, try another server in the required country and sign in to the add-on’s own account where applicable.
Gizmodo measured 7.8% loss for both NordVPN and ExpressVPN, 10.2% for Proton VPN and 12.7% for Private Internet Access on Windows in its test environment.
Android TV
Use the device’s official app store when the provider publishes an Android TV application. Connect before opening Kodi, and check whether the app offers a kill switch or always-on VPN setting in Android’s network controls. If the provider supplies only a phone app, do not assume it will be comfortable or fully compatible on a television interface.
Raspberry Pi and LibreELEC
These platforms often lack the same one-click applications available on Fire TV or Windows. Security.org notes that router configuration is an alternative, but firmware support varies and many stock routers cannot act as VPN clients. Follow the provider’s instructions for your exact operating system and router; do not paste VPN credentials into an untrusted Kodi add-on.

Router-wide installation
- Check the router manufacturer’s documentation for VPN-client support and the protocols accepted by your provider.
- Back up the router configuration before changing firmware or network settings.
- Enter the provider’s server address and credentials exactly as supplied, then apply the configuration.
- Connect one test device and verify that its public IP changes.
- Only after the test succeeds, connect the Kodi device and check the add-on.
A router VPN covers devices that cannot run a native app, but it also routes every device on the selected network through the VPN unless you configure split tunneling. A failed router setup can disconnect the whole household, so retain the original configuration for recovery.
Best Value
- Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
- A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
- Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
- Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
- Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.
Free VPN plans: what “great value” really means
Gizmodo reports that Windscribe and PrivadoVPN worked in its free Kodi test with a 10 GB monthly allowance. Its guide estimates that allowance supported about five hours of HD Kodi streaming in that test context; actual hours vary with bitrate, resolution, advertising and buffering. A 10 GB cap can disappear quickly if you watch high-bitrate video.
Proton VPN’s free plan is reported as unlimited data, but its location-sensitive result was weaker in the same guide. Free plans can also restrict server selection, peak-time capacity, device count and streaming reliability. Compare the specific country you need and the device you own, not just the word “unlimited.”
Does a VPN slow down Kodi or cause buffering?
It can. Encryption, the extra server hop, congestion and a busy Wi-Fi link all reduce available throughput. A small percentage loss may be invisible when your connection has ample headroom; the same loss can trigger buffering when your ISP connection is already close to the stream’s bitrate.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesA practical buffer checklist
- Connect to a nearby server unless the add-on requires another country.
- Try a second server in the same country if the first is congested.
- Use Ethernet or a stronger Wi-Fi band for a stationary Kodi box.
- Close downloads and other high-bandwidth apps.
- Compare the VPN on the same device, at the same time of day, with the same stream.
- Check whether the add-on’s own servers are overloaded before changing VPNs.
Do not treat one speed-test percentage as a universal service property. Gizmodo’s Fire TV and Windows results show why platform-specific testing matters, while Top10VPN’s nearby and 112-country IPVanish figures show why server distance matters.
Privacy, kill switches and leak checks
A kill switch can prevent applications from using the ordinary internet connection when the VPN drops, but its behavior differs by operating system and app. Enable it, then deliberately disconnect the VPN and confirm Kodi cannot reach the network if uninterrupted VPN coverage is important to you.
You can use a reputable IP and DNS leak-check page while connected to confirm that the visible address and DNS resolvers match the expected VPN route. This is a point-in-time check, not proof of a provider’s logging practices, ownership, jurisdiction or future software behavior. Read the current privacy policy and independent audit information before subscribing.
Buying checklist for a Kodi VPN
- Device app: Verify support for your exact Fire TV, Windows, Android TV, Raspberry Pi or router model.
- Add-on location: Confirm that the service has a usable server in the country required by your legal add-on.
- Performance: Prefer measurements taken on the same platform you use, and test during your normal viewing hours.
- Reliability: Look for a kill switch, reconnect behavior and clear recovery steps.
- Privacy: Read the current logging policy and any available audit details; a leak check alone is insufficient.
- Cost: Distinguish introductory pricing from renewal pricing and verify the recurring amount at checkout.
- Connections: Check the current simultaneous-device limit if you plan to cover several Kodi boxes.
- Legality: Use the VPN with content you are authorized to access; it does not legalize unlicensed streams.
Bottom line
Start with NordVPN for the strongest all-around result in Gizmodo’s Fire TV Stick and Windows tests. Choose ExpressVPN when legitimate geo-restricted add-ons are your main concern, IPVanish when you value Top10VPN’s Kodi-specific ranking, Proton VPN for an unlimited-data free-plan and privacy angle, and Private Internet Access only after confirming that its measured performance and add-on compatibility meet your needs. Install the official app, connect before Kodi, and judge the final choice on your own device and legal content source.
