The 5 Best VPN Routers of 2026: Which One Fits Your Network

RTINGS’s current VPN router roundup, accessed 7 October 2026, names five picks. The top pick is the ASUS ROG Strix GS-BE18000. The others are the UniFi Dream Router 7 (upper mid-range), GL.iNet Flint 3 (GL-BE9300, mid-range), GL.iNet Flint 2 (GL-MT6000, lower mid-range), and TP-Link Archer BE230 (budget). If you want one answer, start with the ASUS for a whole-home setup with mesh flexibility, or the GL.iNet Flint 3 if you want a kill switch and ready-made provider presets at Wi-Fi 7 speeds. Those picks depend on which features you need, so the sections below explain the differences that matter before you buy.

The five routers at a glance

The table compares the features RTINGS describes for each pick. Where the roundup summary does not state a value, the cell says so rather than guessing. Check the manufacturer’s specification page for the exact model and hardware revision you plan to buy.

Router RTINGS tier Wi-Fi VPN protocols and modes Kill switch Routing control Provider setup
ASUS ROG Strix GS-BE18000 Top pick Wi-Fi 7 WireGuard and OpenVPN, client and server modes No (per RTINGS) Multiple simultaneous VPN connections; dedicated VPN network Not stated in RTINGS summary
UniFi Dream Router 7 Upper mid-range Not stated in RTINGS summary WireGuard and OpenVPN Yes Devices, apps, domains, VLANs, and IP subnets Provider configuration must be downloaded and imported
GL.iNet Flint 3 (GL-BE9300) Mid-range Tri-band Wi-Fi 7 WireGuard and OpenVPN, client and server modes Yes Policy routing Presets for more than 30 VPN services
GL.iNet Flint 2 (GL-MT6000) Lower mid-range Dual-band Wi-Fi 6 WireGuard and OpenVPN, client and server modes Yes Policy routing Presets for more than 30 VPN services
TP-Link Archer BE230 Budget Wi-Fi 7 WireGuard (select models only, per TP-Link) and OpenVPN, client and server modes No dedicated kill switch (per RTINGS) Selected devices No preset commercial VPN profile; provider configuration must be imported

Client mode and server mode are different jobs

Most buyers want client mode. In this mode the router connects to a VPN provider and sends selected traffic through that tunnel, so devices that cannot run VPN apps are covered too. ASUS’s VPN client guide names smart TVs and set-top boxes as examples of devices that often cannot run VPN software.

Server mode works in the opposite direction. It lets you connect from outside the home back into your network, for example to reach files or services stored on a home device. RTINGS lists server mode alongside client mode for four of the five picks, so check which direction you need before comparing models.

The five picks and who each one suits

ASUS ROG Strix GS-BE18000: whole-home Wi-Fi 7 with mesh flexibility

RTINGS places this router first because it combines VPN client and server modes, multiple simultaneous VPN connections, and a dedicated VPN network. It is the most natural choice when the VPN should cover a whole house and you may expand Wi-Fi coverage later. Its main gap is the lack of a kill switch. If a tunnel drops and devices must never fall back to your normal connection, this model does not meet that requirement on its own.

UniFi Dream Router 7: granular rules for prosumer networks

The UniFi Dream Router 7 is the choice for people who want precise control. You can route traffic by device, app, domain, VLAN, or IP subnet, and it includes a kill switch. The trade-off is complexity. Client use requires downloading your provider’s configuration and importing it, and RTINGS describes a steeper learning curve than the GL.iNet and TP-Link models. Adding Wi-Fi coverage means buying UniFi access points, so this is a commitment to the UniFi ecosystem rather than a standalone router.

GL.iNet GL-SFT1200 Opal Travel Router, AC1200 Dual-Band Wi-Fi | AC1200 dual-band Wi-Fi, 3 gigabit ports, OpenWrt with OpenVPN and WireGuard, 30+ VPN services, pocket 145g
  • 【AC1200 Dual-band Wireless Router】Simultaneous dual-band with wireless speed up to 300 Mbps (2.4GHz) + 867 Mbps (5GHz). 2.4GHz band can handles some simple tasks like emails or web browsing while bandwidth intensive tasks such as gaming or 4K video streaming can be handled by the 5GHz band.*Speed tests are conducted on a local network. Real-world speeds may differ depending on your network configuration.*
  • 【Easy Setup】Please refer to the User Manual and the Unboxing & Setup video guide on Amazon for detailed setup instructions and methods for connecting to the Internet.
  • 【Pocket-friendly】Lightweight design(145g) which designed for your next trip or adventure. Alongside its portable, compact design makes it easy to take with you on the go.
  • 【Full Gigabit Ports】Gigabit Wireless Internet Router with 2 Gigabit LAN ports and 1 Gigabit WAN ports, ideal for lots of internet plan and allow you to connect your wired devices directly.
  • 【Keep your Internet Safe】IPv6 supported. OpenVPN & WireGuard pre-installed, compatible with 30+ VPN service providers. Cloudflare encryption supported to protect the privacy.

GL.iNet Flint 3 (GL-BE9300): flexible Wi-Fi 7 for the home

The Flint 3 pairs tri-band Wi-Fi 7 with a kill switch, policy routing, and presets for more than 30 VPN services. Presets reduce setup work when your provider is on the list. RTINGS notes it is less suited to buyers who want to manage switches and access points from one central system. Choose it when your priority is VPN flexibility on a single router rather than a larger managed network.

GL.iNet Flint 2 (GL-MT6000): the same VPN feature set on Wi-Fi 6

The Flint 2 offers client and server modes, WireGuard and OpenVPN, a kill switch, policy routing, and more than 30 provider presets, which makes it the lower-cost route into the GL.iNet feature set. The trade-offs are dual-band Wi-Fi 6 instead of tri-band Wi-Fi 7, fewer high-speed Ethernet ports, and no mesh expansion. It makes sense if your internet connection and device count do not need Wi-Fi 7 capacity.

TP-Link Archer BE230: budget Wi-Fi 7 with simple device selection

The Archer BE230 is the least expensive pick and supports client and server modes with WireGuard and OpenVPN. You choose which devices use the VPN, and everything else stays on your regular connection. TP-Link’s VPN client guide, last updated 17 April 2026, states: “Only the devices you add to this list will use the VPN connection. All other devices on your network will continue to use your regular Internet connection as normal.”

Three limits matter. WireGuard is available only on select models, and availability varies by region and hardware revision. The router has no dedicated kill switch. It has no preset profile for commercial VPN services, so you must import your provider’s configuration.

Kill switches and routing rules change what the VPN does

A kill switch blocks traffic from the selected devices if the VPN tunnel fails. Without one, those devices can send traffic over your ordinary internet connection without warning. This matters most for people who rely on the VPN for privacy or regional access. Two of the five picks lack a dedicated kill switch, so check this before buying if it matters to you.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Routing granularity works the same way. Device-based selection is simple, while domain, app, VLAN, and subnet rules give you more control but require more configuration. Policy routing on the GL.iNet models sits between these approaches. Decide which level of control you need before you choose a model, because it is harder to add later.

  • Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.

Setup checks before you buy

  • Confirm you have a VPN subscription that supports WireGuard or OpenVPN and can provide a configuration file. A router VPN feature does not include a VPN service.
  • Check the exact model number and hardware revision against the manufacturer’s VPN compatibility list. TP-Link ties WireGuard support to select models and regional availability.
  • Ask your provider which connection type it supports. ASUS advises confirming the connection type with the VPN provider before configuring the router.
  • If you choose the UniFi Dream Router 7 or the Archer BE230, prepare the imported configuration file in advance.
  • Decide whether you need client mode, server mode, or both. Not every buyer needs remote access into the home network.
  • Check current prices and stock with retailers. This guide does not quote prices.

How to read speed claims

Speed figures for VPN routers depend on the test conditions, so compare them carefully. GL.iNet’s product page for the Beryl AX, a travel router rather than one of the five picks, lists a maximum of 300 Mbps for WireGuard client mode and 150 Mbps for OpenVPN client mode. GL.iNet states that these were measured on a local network, that real-world speeds may differ, and that server-mode speeds are slower.

Router Wi-Fi ratings do not measure the speed of a VPN tunnel. RTINGS excludes speeds measured while connected to a VPN from its scores, so the roundup does not compare VPN throughput across the five picks. If speed matters, test the router with your own provider and server location.

What a VPN router does not guarantee

Routing traffic through a VPN does not by itself make a home network anonymous or give you privacy from every party. Those outcomes depend on the provider, the configuration, and your other habits. The sources cited here describe routing features, not those broader results. RTINGS names access to region-specific streaming content as one use case, but availability depends on both the VPN provider and the streaming service, so it can change without notice.

Choosing by situation

  • Whole house, mesh expansion, and remote access: ASUS ROG Strix GS-BE18000, accepting that it has no kill switch.
  • Per-device, per-domain, or per-VLAN rules in a managed network: UniFi Dream Router 7, accepting a steeper setup and the need for UniFi access points for Wi-Fi expansion.
  • Kill switch and preset provider setup on Wi-Fi 7: GL.iNet Flint 3 (GL-BE9300).
  • Same VPN features on a lower budget, with Wi-Fi 6 and fewer high-speed Ethernet ports: GL.iNet Flint 2 (GL-MT6000).
  • Lowest cost, Wi-Fi 7, and selected devices only: TP-Link Archer BE230, accepting no dedicated kill switch and model-dependent WireGuard support.

These picks come from RTINGS’s roundup, and the feature descriptions above draw on that roundup and on manufacturer setup guides. This article does not add independent throughput or performance measurements.
