You can usually use your own router with Verizon Fios, but only for a standalone internet setup connected over Ethernet. Verizon’s own guidance describes that path, then warns that TV equipment and older coax (MoCA) installs need extra steps, and Verizon does not provide support for third-party routers. This guide explains which setups qualify, how to match a router to your plan, and five models worth shortlisting. It does not rank them by lab or hands-on testing, because no comparable independent test set for current models was available when this was written.
Can you use your own router with Fios?
Verizon’s support article on using your own router with Fios describes an Ethernet-based setup for standalone Fios internet. The same article says the process is not valid for Fios One set-top boxes, so a TV-bundled account needs a different answer. Verizon’s own-router guidance is the primary reference for these conditions.

Check your setup before you buy
- Confirm the service type. If you receive TV through a Fios One set-top box, Verizon’s described process does not apply. Keep Verizon’s TV equipment in place and treat any router change as a separate decision.
- Identify how the current router connects to the network. Ethernet WAN is the simplest third-party path described by Verizon. If your current arrangement uses older coax/MoCA connections, read the Verizon guidance closely before swapping, because the change can affect the network you have now.
- Write down your plan’s speed tier. You will need it to judge which ports and Wi-Fi capabilities are worth paying for.
- Count your wired devices. Desktops, game consoles, a NAS, or a home media server may need LAN ports that run faster than 1 Gbps.
- Decide whether you need a Verizon-supplied device. Verizon-provided equipment is the only option Verizon supports directly. A third-party router is your responsibility if something goes wrong.
Match the router’s ports to your plan
A router’s Wi-Fi headline speed does not tell you how fast your internet can run. The Ethernet WAN port that connects to the Fios network, and the LAN ports that connect wired devices, set the upper limit for wired traffic. Verizon’s plan pages describe typical wired speeds for its higher tiers. These are descriptions of Verizon’s plans, not measurements of any router.
| Fios tier | Verizon’s description of average wired speed | What to check on a router |
|---|---|---|
| 2 Gig (Verizon 2 Gig FAQ) | Between 1.5 Gbps and 2.3 Gbps | A WAN port and LAN ports rated at 2.5 Gbps or higher keep wired devices from becoming the bottleneck. |
| 5 Gig (Verizon 5 Gig FAQ) | Between 4.5 Gbps and 5.3 Gbps | Multi-gig WAN capability is needed. A standard gigabit port cannot carry this tier. |
A router that is rated for multi-gig Ethernet is not the same as a router that sustains those speeds over Wi-Fi. Wireless throughput depends on client devices, distance, walls, and interference, so plan the wired and wireless parts of your network separately.
#1 Best Overall
- The latest Wi-Fi generation, Wi-Fi 6 (802.11 ax) with speeds averaging 60% faster on 2.4 GHz and 38% faster on 5 GHz than previous Verizon Wi-Fi routers*
- Tri-band 4x4 antennas, increasing Wi-Fi coverage by an average of 63%*
- 4 Gigabit LAN + 1 Gigabit WAN, MoCA2.5 + LAN MoCA1.1 WAN
- Automatic Band switching between 2.4GH and 5.8GH Band and 150% more Wi-Fi range than G1100
- Self-Organizing Network technology for automatic band steering and single Wi-Fi Network name
Wi-Fi generation matters only with compatible devices
Wi-Fi 6E adds the 6 GHz band, and Wi-Fi 7 adds more channel width and additional multi-link features. These gains only help clients that support the same standard. A Wi-Fi 7 router will still run older phones and laptops at their own maximum rates. Verizon describes its CR1000A and CR1000B routers as Wi-Fi 6E, and its Wi-Fi Access Point CHR30A as Wi-Fi 7 in select markets (see Verizon router FAQs and Verizon’s Fios plan FAQ). Those facts describe Verizon’s equipment, not whether every third-party router will work in every Fios configuration.
Extenders and TV: where a third-party router can break things
Verizon documents Fios Extender compatibility for specified Verizon routers, with Ethernet or MoCA used as the backhaul connection. If you rely on a Fios Extender, confirm that your router model is on Verizon’s list before you change routers. A third-party router does not automatically keep Verizon-specific extender or TV features working. See Verizon’s Fios Extender support page for the current compatibility details.

Five models to shortlist
The models below are listed in no particular order. They are shortlist candidates based on manufacturer or Verizon specifications, not rankings from testing. The table shows only what the sources establish. Where a cell says “not stated,” the manufacturer’s documentation I reviewed did not give that detail.
| Model | Type | Documented ports | Wi-Fi | Fios-specific note | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| TP-Link Archer BE800 | Third-party Wi-Fi 7 router | Two 10 Gbps WAN/LAN ports; four 2.5 Gbps LAN ports | BE19000 tri-band Wi-Fi 7 | Supports router and access-point modes, and Dynamic IP among WAN types. Compatibility with Fios is not verified in the sources reviewed. | TP-Link product page |
| Verizon CR1000A / CR1000B | Verizon-supplied router | 10 Gbps and 2.5 Gbps LAN ports, as described by Verizon | Tri-band Wi-Fi 6E | Verizon-supported. Relevant to Fios Extender compatibility for specified Verizon routers. | Verizon router FAQ |
| Verizon Wi-Fi Access Point CHR30A | Verizon-supplied access point, not a standalone router | Not stated | Wi-Fi 7 | Available in select markets. Confirm local eligibility and how Verizon provisions the device. | Verizon Fios Gig FAQ |
| eero 7 | Mesh Wi-Fi 7 system | Not stated | Wi-Fi 7 | Fios-specific configuration not established in the sources reviewed. | eero 7 support |
| eero Max 7 | Mesh Wi-Fi 7 system | Multi-gig capability per eero’s product family support; exact port layout not stated | Wi-Fi 7 | Fios-specific configuration and relative performance not established in the sources reviewed. | eero product-family support |
Single router or mesh?
The Archer BE800 is a single router, so a large or multi-floor home may need a wired access point or a separate mesh system. The eero models are mesh systems, which are built to cover larger homes through multiple nodes. Verizon’s CHR30A is an access point, so it works alongside a Verizon router rather than replacing one. Choose the layout first, then the device type.

Limits of this guide
This guide does not include measured coverage, latency, or throughput for any of these models, and it does not rank them as the best choice for your home. Current prices, stock levels, and Amazon availability were not verified. Confirm current price and return terms before you buy, and check Verizon’s support pages for the latest compatibility details, since Verizon’s documentation and plan descriptions change over time.
For most standalone Fios customers, the right starting point is the port and Wi-Fi capacity that matches your speed tier and device list. For TV or extender customers, the right starting point is Verizon’s compatibility documentation.
