Best overall: the NETGEAR Nighthawk CAX80 is the most capable option in this five-device shortlist, with DOCSIS 3.1, Wi-Fi 6, a 2.5 Gbps Ethernet port and four additional gigabit ports. The CAX30 is the simpler certified choice for many mainstream plans, while the ARRIS G34, Motorola MG8725 and ARRIS G54 target different combinations of Wi-Fi capacity and wired networking.

These are researched product specifications and editorial positions, not results from hands-on testing. Before ordering any gateway, check the exact model against your internet provider’s current device list, your service address and your subscribed speed tier. A device that works on one provider or plan may not be approved on another.

Quick comparison of the five gateways

Model Modem and Wi-Fi listed Wired ports listed Best fit in this shortlist Important qualification
NETGEAR Nighthawk CAX80 DOCSIS 3.1; Wi-Fi 6 (AX6000) One 2.5 Gbps Ethernet port plus four 1 Gbps ports Households wanting the strongest wired and wireless capacity Confirm that your provider and plan approve the exact model; AX6000 is an aggregate Wi-Fi class, not an internet-speed guarantee.
NETGEAR Nighthawk CAX30 DOCSIS 3.1; Wi-Fi 6 (AX2700) Two 1 Gbps Ethernet ports Mainstream cable plans where two wired connections are enough NETGEAR’s table lists it as certified with Xfinity, Cox and Spectrum, but location and plan eligibility still need confirmation.
ARRIS SURFboard G34 DOCSIS 3.1; Wi-Fi 6 (AX3000) Four 1 Gbps Ethernet ports Users who need several wired devices and a plan described as up to 1 Gbps No provider approval matrix for this model is established here; verify directly before purchase.
Motorola MG8725 DOCSIS 3.1; Wi-Fi 6 (AX6000) One 2.5 Gbps port Users seeking high-capacity Wi-Fi and a multi-gig wired connection Any Low Latency DOCSIS or provider-certification claim should be checked with the provider and manufacturer for the current edition.
ARRIS SURFboard G54 DOCSIS 3.1; Wi-Fi 7 One 10 Gbps port plus four 1 Gbps ports Early Wi-Fi 7 adopters with compatible clients and very fast local networking Approval and some “first” positioning claims are not independently verified here; obtain current ISP confirmation.

The labels above describe advertised or editorially listed capabilities. They are not independent throughput measurements. Your usable internet speed is limited by the service plan, network conditions, Wi-Fi client capability and the provider’s provisioning.

What a combo modem-router does

A combo modem-router, also called a gateway, combines two jobs in one enclosure. The modem communicates with the cable provider’s network, while the router creates your home network, assigns local addresses and provides Wi-Fi. You do not need separate modem and router boxes for a standard installation.

#1 Best Overall
NETGEAR Nighthawk DOCSIS 3.1 Modem Router Combo CAX30, WiFi 6, 2.7 Gbps | Multi-Gig, Reliable Performance, Guided Set Up, 4× Gig Ports, Xfinity/Spectrum/Cox Compatible, Dual-band, Free Expert Help
  • CABLE INTERNET AND WIFI MADE FOR YOUR HOME: This two-in-one cable modem and WiFi router puts every setting in your hands, from your WiFi names and passwords to how your network runs, so it works the way your household needs.
  • APPROVED FOR YOUR PROVIDER AND PLAN: Works with Xfinity internet plans up to 800Mbps, Spectrum up to 1Gbps, and Cox up to 1Gbps. Not compatible with Verizon, AT&T, CenturyLink, DirecTV, DISH, or bundled voice plans. ISP activation required after setup.
  • GET THE FULL SPEED OF YOUR PLAN: DOCSIS 3.1 supports Gigabit+ cable internet plans, so large downloads finish faster and 4K streaming, gaming, and video calls can all run at once. Actual speeds vary by plan and provider.
  • WIFI 6 COVERAGE FOR THE WHOLE HOME: Stay connected in every room with dual-band AX2700 WiFi 6 covering up to 2,000 sq ft and capacity for 25+ connected devices. Real-world coverage depends on home size, layout, and building materials.
  • WIRED CONNECTIONS FOR YOUR FASTEST DEVICES: Four Gigabit Ethernet ports keep gaming consoles, desktops, and streaming devices hardwired for the lowest latency and the most stable connection in your home.

The single-box design can reduce cable clutter and simplify setup. The trade-off is less flexibility: if wireless technology improves or one component fails, you replace the whole gateway. You also become responsible for firmware updates, security settings, troubleshooting and Wi-Fi administration when you use your own equipment. Xfinity’s ownership guidance explicitly places those responsibilities on the customer.

Compatibility comes before every other specification

The most important buying question is not “Which gateway has the biggest Wi-Fi number?” It is “Will this exact model be activated on my service, at my address and on my plan?” Providers maintain model-specific approval lists, and those lists can change.

Use the provider’s live lookup

  1. Open your provider’s official equipment-compatibility page while signed in, if a personalized lookup is offered.
  2. Enter the service address or account details requested.
  3. Search for the complete model designation, including its suffix. A related model is not an adequate substitute.
  4. Check that the listing supports your subscribed download tier and any upload, voice or other service you use.
  5. Save or screenshot the result, including any notes about supported plans, before ordering.

Xfinity’s “My Device Info” process is the clearest example in the available guidance: it asks customers to confirm both device compatibility and supported internet speed. The same principle applies to other cable providers.

Understand “certified” versus “compatible”

NETGEAR’s support table separates two statuses. Certified means the Internet service provider tested the device and guaranteed operation on its network. Compatible means the device meets the provider’s stated requirements and is expected to work, but the wording does not represent the same provider testing or guarantee. Neither label removes the need to check the current plan and location.

Check special services

Telephone service is a common exception. Not every modem-router combo in this group supports Xfinity Voice, and the available information does not establish a current model-by-model qualification list. If you have cable phone service, verify voice support with the provider before buying; do not infer it from DOCSIS or Wi-Fi specifications.

How the five models differ

NETGEAR Nighthawk CAX80: the high-capacity pick

The CAX80 combines DOCSIS 3.1 with Wi-Fi 6 in the AX6000 class. Its one 2.5 Gbps Ethernet port is useful for a multi-gig-capable computer, switch or wired access point, and four additional gigabit ports provide connections for ordinary wired devices. That port mix gives it the broadest wired flexibility among the Wi-Fi 6 options listed here.

Choose it when your plan, local network or future upgrade path can benefit from a multi-gig wired link and your household has many simultaneous Wi-Fi clients. Do not buy it solely because “AX6000” appears on the box: that is a combined radio-class label across bands, not a promise that a single phone will download at 6,000 Mbps or that your cable plan supplies that speed.

NETGEAR Nighthawk CAX30: the practical mainstream option

The CAX30 is also DOCSIS 3.1 and Wi-Fi 6, but it is listed in the lower AX2700 class and has two 1 Gbps Ethernet ports. That is enough for a typical wired desktop, game console or switch when no multi-gig connection is required.

NETGEAR’s compatibility table lists the CAX30 with Xfinity, Cox and Spectrum as certified. Treat that as a useful starting point rather than a universal approval: confirm your address, speed tier and current provider list. Its simpler port layout can be an advantage if you want a smaller, less expensive gateway and do not need 2.5 Gbps Ethernet.

ARRIS SURFboard G34: four gigabit ports

The G34 is listed with DOCSIS 3.1, Wi-Fi 6 in the AX3000 class and four 1 Gbps Ethernet ports. The roundup positions it for plans up to 1 Gbps. Four wired ports suit a home office, entertainment center or small switch without immediately requiring an additional Ethernet hub.

  • Fast, Reliable Connection: Enjoy high-speed streaming, gaming, and browsing with a trusted brand used in over 260 million homes.
  • Advanced Modem Tech: Uses DOCSIS 3.1 for faster speeds, better security, and smoother gaming.
  • Strong Wi-Fi 6 Coverage: Dual-band Wi-Fi 6 delivers faster, wider wireless performance for your whole home.
  • Service Compatibility: Works with major ISPs like Xfinity, Spectrum, and Cox
  • Save on Fees: Own your modem and avoid up to $168/year in rental charges (varies by provider)

No official provider matrix for this model is established in the available material. Check the provider’s own lookup rather than relying on a retailer description or a generic statement that the gateway works with major cable companies.

Motorola MG8725: Wi-Fi 6 with a multi-gig port

The MG8725 is listed as a DOCSIS 3.1 gateway with Wi-Fi 6 (AX6000) and one 2.5 Gbps Ethernet port. It is therefore aimed at households that want high aggregate wireless capacity and at least one faster-than-gigabit wired connection.

Some descriptions associate this model with Low Latency DOCSIS certification. That status should be verified with current primary-source documentation before you treat it as a buying reason, because certification and service support can depend on the provider and product revision.

ARRIS SURFboard G54: the Wi-Fi 7 and 10 Gbps option

The G54 is the outlier in the group, listed with DOCSIS 3.1, Wi-Fi 7, one 10 Gbps Ethernet port and four 1 Gbps ports. It makes sense only when the rest of your network can use those capabilities: Wi-Fi 7 client devices, a multi-gig switch or a local server with faster-than-gigabit Ethernet.

Wi-Fi 7 does not make a slow cable plan faster, and older phones and laptops will not gain Wi-Fi 7 features simply by connecting to this gateway. Provider approval for the G54 is not independently established here, so obtain written or lookup-based confirmation before purchase.

Choosing by service tier and household needs

For ordinary cable plans

Start with provider approval and DOCSIS 3.1 support. If your wired devices all use gigabit Ethernet, the CAX30 or G34 may provide the ports you need without paying for multi-gig hardware that your plan and local network cannot use.

For a multi-gig wired network

Look for the CAX80 or MG8725 if one 2.5 Gbps connection is sufficient. The G54 offers a 10 Gbps port, but that advantage matters only when the connected computer, switch, cabling and service path support similar speeds. Confirm the exact port specification in the current manufacturer documentation.

For many wired devices

The G34 and CAX80 provide four gigabit ports in addition to their higher-level capabilities. The G54 also lists four gigabit ports alongside its 10 Gbps port. Count your devices—desktops, consoles, televisions, printers, switches and wired access points—before deciding whether an integrated port count is enough.

For newer wireless clients

Wi-Fi 6 appears on the CAX80, CAX30, G34 and MG8725. Wi-Fi 7 is listed for the G54. The practical difference depends on your phones, laptops, consoles and smart-home equipment, as well as coverage and interference in your home. A newer Wi-Fi label cannot overcome poor gateway placement, crowded radio channels or a client device that supports only an older generation.

Buying checklist

  • Exact model: Match the complete model number in the provider lookup.
  • Service address: Approval can vary by network region, even under the same provider brand.
  • Speed tier: Confirm that the gateway is accepted for the plan you actually pay for, not merely a lower tier.
  • Modem standard: All five candidates are described as DOCSIS 3.1, but approval and provisioning remain provider decisions.
  • Wireless clients: Choose Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 7 based on the devices you own and expect to keep.
  • Ethernet layout: Count ports and note whether you need one 2.5, 10 or only gigabit connection.
  • Voice service: Verify telephone compatibility separately.
  • Security and updates: Make sure you are prepared to apply firmware updates, set a strong administrator password and manage Wi-Fi security.
  • Total cost: Compare the purchase price with your provider’s equipment charge over the period you expect to keep the gateway. No universal savings amount applies to every plan.

Installation and activation workflow

  1. Before disconnecting the rental unit, record your current Wi-Fi name and password if you want to reuse them, and download any provider activation instructions.
  2. Connect the coaxial cable from the wall outlet to the gateway’s cable connector. Hand-tighten the connector; do not use a loose adapter or damaged cable.
  3. Connect a computer to Ethernet for the first setup when possible. Wired setup avoids confusion caused by an unconfigured wireless network.
  4. Power on the gateway and wait for the downstream, upstream and online indicators to settle. Initial registration can take several minutes.
  5. Open the provider’s activation page or contact support using the account’s equipment-activation process. Supply the gateway’s MAC address or other requested identifier from its label.
  6. Set the administrator password, Wi-Fi names and Wi-Fi password. Use a unique administrator password and enable the strongest security mode offered by the current firmware.
  7. Update firmware if the manufacturer interface or provider process offers an update, then reboot if requested.
  8. Test one wired device and one wireless device. Compare the result with your plan while remembering that a speed test measures the connection between that client and the test server, not the gateway’s aggregate Wi-Fi label.

Common problems and fixes

The provider will not activate the gateway

Recheck the complete model number, MAC address and service address. A retailer listing may show a similar model that the provider does not recognize. If the model is marked compatible rather than certified, ask support whether it is currently permitted for your plan and region.

The gateway activates but speeds are below the plan

Test over Ethernet first, verify that the client has a gigabit or faster network adapter, and check whether the provider has provisioned the correct tier. Wireless results vary with distance, walls, interference and client capabilities. Do not use the AX or Wi-Fi generation label as a measured speed result.

There are not enough Ethernet ports

Add an unmanaged Ethernet switch to a gigabit port, or select a model whose integrated port count matches your layout. A switch expands local ports; it does not increase the internet speed supplied by the provider.

Voice service does not work

Confirm that the specific gateway is approved for the provider’s telephone service. DOCSIS 3.1 alone does not establish voice compatibility. If the provider requires its own voice equipment, a gateway without that approval will not replace it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Wi-Fi coverage is poor

Place the gateway in an open, central position rather than inside a cabinet. Separate it from large metal objects and interference sources. If coverage remains inadequate, use a provider-approved mesh or wired access point; verify that the gateway’s routing and bridge modes support the arrangement before buying additional equipment.

Which DOCSIS 3.1 modem-router combo is best?

There is no universal winner because provider approval and plan support are prerequisites. Among these five, the CAX80 is the strongest all-round capability choice on the listed specifications; the CAX30 is the most straightforward mainstream option where its certified status applies; the G34 favors four gigabit ports; the MG8725 combines Wi-Fi 6 with one 2.5 Gbps port; and the G54 is aimed at Wi-Fi 7 and very fast local networking. Make the final choice only after the provider lookup confirms the model for your address and tier.
