Quick answer: The advertised $400 saving referred to a specific 15-inch MacBook Air with an M3 chip, 24GB of unified memory and a 512GB SSD. Engadget listed it at $1,299, down from $1,699, during Prime Day on July 11, 2025. That “still in stock” claim was time-limited; it is not proof of an active August 2026 deal. Apple’s current store pages now feature M5 MacBook Air models, so any M3 or M4 listing should be treated as older-generation, clearance or refurbished stock.
What the original $400 deal included
Engadget’s July 11, 2025 deal article identified Amazon as the retailer for the headline offer. The discount applied to the following configuration, not to every MacBook Air:

The two M4 entries cannot be compared precisely with the M3 offer until their retailer listings confirm memory, storage, condition and seller. A lower price may simply reflect a smaller SSD or less memory.

Is the deal still live in 2026?
There is no basis for treating the 2025 “still in stock” wording as current inventory. Prime Day stock and prices can change by the hour, and the original report was published on July 11, 2025. If you find a similar listing now, verify it on the product page and at checkout.
Checks to make on Amazon
- Open the exact listing rather than a generic search result at Amazon’s MacBook Air search.
- Confirm the chip, screen size, memory and SSD capacity match the advertised configuration.
- Check whether the seller is Amazon or a third-party marketplace seller.
- Verify that the condition is new, renewed or refurbished, and read the applicable return and warranty terms.
- Confirm the displayed reference price applies to that same configuration.
- Record the price, delivery estimate and stock status at the time you order; none is permanent.
If no matching listing exists, the original $400 promotion has expired or is no longer independently verifiable.

These are older-generation MacBooks now
The featured M3 Air launched in 2024, and the article also listed M4 models. Apple’s currently surfaced 15-inch Air buying page uses an M5 chip, making M3 and M4 machines older-generation products in 2026. Apple’s displayed 15-inch M5 configuration (10-core CPU, 10-core GPU, 24GB memory and 512GB storage) was shown at $1,499 when crawled; Apple’s page is the authoritative place to recheck today’s price: 15-inch M5 MacBook Air.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThat does not make an M3 or M4 a bad purchase. Judge the discount against the actual price gap, warranty, return policy, configuration and how long you expect to keep the laptop. Do not call either the 2025 deal or a current listing the lowest price ever without reliable price-history evidence.

Which size and configuration fits your work?
13-inch Air: portability and lower entry price
The 13-inch model takes less room in a bag and was the least expensive option in the historical table. It suits students and frequent travelers who mainly browse, write, stream and use office or school applications.
15-inch Air: more workspace
A 15-inch display is more comfortable for split-screen documents, spreadsheets, editing timelines and multitasking, but it is less compact. The historical M3 deal was not a base model: Apple’s product information identifies a 15.3-inch display, 24GB memory, 512GB SSD, two Thunderbolt/USB 4 ports and up to 18 hours of battery life for that configuration. See Apple’s refurbished listing.

When 24GB unified memory is worthwhile
Unified memory is shared by the processor and graphics system and cannot normally be upgraded later. Twenty-four gigabytes is sensible for large browser sessions, development tools, photo or video work, virtual machines, containers and long ownership cycles. Base memory is generally adequate for web, office, streaming, schoolwork and light coding. The right choice depends on workload rather than the chip name alone.

A 512GB SSD leaves more room for applications, local photos, games, offline media and future macOS updates. A 256GB drive can work for cloud-first users, but external storage or cloud plans add cost and inconvenience. MacBook storage is not normally user-upgradable, so choose capacity at purchase.

What Engadget’s review actually established
Engadget scored its M3 MacBook Air review 90 and praised the M3 performance, slim build, 15-inch display and six-speaker audio system. It also noted that the charging and USB-C ports are on one side, which can make peripheral placement less convenient. Those are Engadget’s review judgments, not new testing of current stock.
Buying risks that can erase the apparent saving
- Configuration mismatch: Listings may vary between 8GB, 16GB or 24GB memory; 256GB or 512GB storage; 13-inch or 15-inch screens; and M3, M4 or M5 chips.
- Seller and warranty: A marketplace seller may offer different warranty, return and documentation terms from Apple or Amazon.
- Condition: Renewed, used and Apple Certified Refurbished products are not equivalent to new retail stock.
- Reference-price ambiguity: “Save $400” may compare with an original launch price, MSRP or an earlier retailer price rather than the current market price.
- Ports: The M3 Air has two Thunderbolt/USB 4 ports, MagSafe 3 and a headphone jack. HDMI, SD-card and USB-A users may need a hub or dock.
- Sustained workloads: The fanless Air is quiet for everyday use, but sustained rendering, advanced 3D work or heavy local machine-learning workloads may warrant comparing a MacBook Pro.
How the historical deal compares with current alternatives
Current-generation purchase
If you want the newest platform, compare any discounted M3 or M4 directly with Apple’s M5 configuration, including the price difference, display size, memory, storage, wireless features, external-display support and expected support life. Apple’s surfaced M5 page describes Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, a 16-core Neural Engine and support for up to two external displays for that displayed 15-inch configuration; these specifications are model-specific.
Apple Certified Refurbished
Apple’s refurbished 15-inch M3 example displayed $1,139 when crawled and included a one-year limited warranty and 14-day returns policy. Price and stock are volatile, and this protection applies to Apple Certified Refurbished inventory rather than every Amazon renewed listing. Check Apple’s listing for the current terms.
Trade-in and AppleCare+
Apple Trade In provides an estimate only after you enter the device, condition and other details, so there is no universal credit to subtract. AppleCare+ pricing depends on model and coverage option; check the checkout amount before treating it as part of the deal.
Verdict
The 2025 Prime Day offer was a genuine $400 reduction on a high-spec 15-inch M3 Air, and its 24GB/512GB configuration made it more compelling than a headline comparison with a lower-memory base model. In August 2026, however, it is a historical deal, not evidence of live stock. Buy an M3 or M4 only when a current listing matches the configuration, seller, condition, warranty and price you have verified. Otherwise, compare current M5 pricing or Apple Certified Refurbished inventory instead of relying on the old “still in stock” claim.
