The disaster killed 21 people and injured 150, damaged nearby buildings and infrastructure, and led to a 1925 finding that the tank’s owners were negligent. The often-repeated $628,000 damages figure is not confirmed by the official accounts cited below, and the precise physical mechanism that started the rupture remains uncertain.
What happened in the Boston molasses flood?
At about 12:45 p.m. on January 15, 1919, a large tank associated with Purity Distilling Company and its parent, U.S. Industrial Alcohol, ruptured in Boston’s North End. A fast-moving wave of molasses swept through a crowded working neighborhood. The City of Boston says it knocked an elevated train off its tracks, damaged buildings, and shifted a firehouse from its foundation. The tank stood near homes and workplaces, including the North End Paving Yard and Copps Hill Wharf.
Police, cadets from the USS Nantucket, and the Red Cross responded. The City of Boston records 21 deaths and 150 injuries; the Massachusetts Secretary of the Commonwealth’s historical account gives the same toll. How much damage did the flood cause?
The flood caused loss of life and extensive damage to property and infrastructure. The City of Boston describes damage to buildings, the elevated railway, and a firehouse; its account does not provide a verified total dollar amount for the losses.

The $628,000 figure in some accounts cannot be confirmed from the official city and state sources cited here. Those sources do not establish what the figure includes, who received any awards or payments, or how it relates to the legal proceeding. It should therefore not be treated as a verified total for property damage, compensation, or all losses. A copy of the court-appointed auditor’s report or related court record would be needed to establish the amount and its accounting scope.
What caused the tank to rupture?
The strongest supported account is that a structurally weak tank failed after warning signs were overlooked. The City of Boston says the tank had leaked and that engineers later found its walls too thin. The Massachusetts historical transcript describes rushed construction and inadequate oversight. These points help explain why the tank was unsafe, but they do not settle the exact sequence by which it broke apart.

What the court established
In 1925, a court-appointed auditor found the tank’s owners negligent and responsible for the collapse and the resulting losses. A 2024 engineering case study summarizes the liability finding as involving inadequate safety design and ignored warning signs. That legal conclusion concerns responsibility; it is not proof of every physical detail of the rupture.
What later engineering analysis proposed
A 2014 analysis by engineer Ronald Mayville, as summarized in the 2024 case study, discussed thin tank walls and high stresses around rivet holes. It also raised low-manganese steel and brittle behavior in cold weather as possible contributors. These are later engineering hypotheses, not a definitive finding that any one factor initiated the failure.

What remains uncertain
The reviewed engineering account says the precise cause cannot be determined from the available evidence. The best distinction is between the established finding of negligence and the unresolved physical mechanism: design weakness and ignored warning signs support the conclusion that the tank was unsafe, while the evidence does not identify a single, certain trigger for its rupture. How was the neighborhood cleaned up?
Cleanup was difficult and continued for weeks, according to the Massachusetts historical transcript. The City of Boston says workers used harbor saltwater because it broke down the molasses. The substance spread through streets and buildings, making removal a prolonged task rather than a simple wash-down.

What changed after the disaster?
The City of Boston describes the flood as part of the history behind stronger industrial regulation. Citing author Stephen Puleo, it points to requirements such as engineer-signed plans, building inspections, and documented architectural work. This is a stated legacy of the disaster; it does not mean the flood alone created every modern U.S. building code.
