What an IMDb episode ranking tells you

Why different “top-rated” lists disagree
A ranking is only meaningful alongside its inclusion rule. A list that admits episodes with fewer votes can include titles a stricter list excludes, and a minimum-vote rule can change which episodes qualify. Community lists also may use different tie-breakers or reflect different snapshots. For example, one IMDb community list describes a 1,000-vote minimum and a custom tie-break method, while another says it uses a 40,000-vote minimum but displays “Ozymandias” at 9.5 despite claiming a 9.7 rating. Those are different list pages, not a single consistent official ranking: “Highest Rated TV Episodes in IMDB” and “Highest Rated TV Episodes Of All Time”.
Ratings, vote totals, and ordering can change as users submit votes. A list should therefore identify its access date as well as its threshold. A list page titled “IMDB’s Top Rated Episodes” is a community list, not an IMDb editorial declaration of the best episodes ever made.

Episodes surfaced in the available lists
Several recognizable episodes appear among the surfaced ranking examples: “Ozymandias,” “Felina,” and “Face Off” from Breaking Bad, and “Battle of the Bastards” and “The Winds of Winter” from Game of Thrones. They are leads for checking episode pages, not a verified ordered top five: the lists disagree on ordering and scores, and the available evidence does not establish all 16 rows from one current source.
How to verify a current top 16
- Choose the rule. Set a minimum vote count before ranking. A higher threshold tends to restrict the eligible pool; a lower one admits more episodes with fewer ratings. State the exact cutoff rather than calling the result simply “IMDb’s top episodes.”
- Use episode-level entries. Check the individual episode pages or episode ratings reached through a series’ ratings page. IMDb Community forum guidance describes accessing episode ratings from a series ratings page, but that is interface guidance, not an official ranking methodology: IMDb Community Forums: “IMDb Title Subpage Redesign: FAQ & TV Episodes”.
- Capture one consistent snapshot. Record each qualifying episode’s title, series, season and episode identifier, score, and vote total from the same source or a consistent set of episode pages. Note the access date and how ties are handled.
- Sort and check all 16. Rank only entries that meet the chosen threshold, then confirm the displayed score and vote count for each. Do not fill gaps by borrowing titles or scores from a different list.

Editorial lists can use their own sampling rules too. TVLine’s February 23, 2026 article is explicitly a 15-episode selection based on IMDb users, and its search result describes a minimum of 10,000 reviews. That is a separate editorial method, not an exact IMDb top 16: TVLine’s list.
