What you actually need before buying extras
Start with the tools that perform essential jobs. Most motherboard, power-supply, storage and graphics-card screws use a Phillips #2 driver. An M.2 mounting screw is smaller and may require a Phillips #0. A magnetic tip is useful for holding a screw on the driver and retrieving one that falls into a case; Intel says a magnetic screwdriver should not damage components when used normally.
| Job | Baseline tool or condition | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| General assembly | Phillips #2 screwdriver | The common size for case, motherboard, drive and expansion-card screws. |
| M.2 installation | Phillips #0 screwdriver | Some M.2 screws use a different head; check the motherboard manual. |
| Workspace | Stable, well-lit, uncarpeted surface | An uncarpeted area reduces static concerns; keep drinks and loose metal away. |
| Screw control | Small tray or compartmented organizer | An egg carton or tackle box works if you do not own a parts tray. |
| Static handling | Ground yourself and handle parts by their edges | An anti-static wrist strap is useful but Intel does not treat it as mandatory. |
| Thermal interface | Cooler-supplied paste when present | Paste may be pre-applied or included; follow the cooler instructions before buying more. |
Everything else is a convenience choice. A specialist tool is worthwhile when it prevents a specific failure or saves repeated frustration, not because every builder needs a complete kit.

Lighting and reach tools for awkward case interiors
1. LED flashlight gloves
Small LED lamps mounted on your fingers point light exactly where your hands are working. They are handy when a graphics card blocks the case light, when a connector sits behind a radiator, or when you are searching the bottom of a chassis for a dropped screw. Because both hands remain free, you can hold a board and illuminate its socket at the same time.
They are not the most versatile light. A headlamp, ordinary flashlight, phone light or movable desk lamp covers more situations and can illuminate a wider area. Choose gloves only if you routinely work in cramped, dark spaces or want a light that follows your fingers.
2. Needle-nose pliers
Long, narrow jaws reach places fingers cannot: behind a motherboard edge, beneath a power-supply shroud or around a partially installed drive. Use them to retrieve loose screws or guide a stubborn cable, not to crush connectors. Squeeze gently and keep the jaws away from exposed contacts and traces.
A hemostat provides similar reach and locking action. If you already own either tool, a separate PC-branded pickup tool adds little. Never use metal pliers to pry a release tab that could be opened by hand; a plastic tool is safer for that job.
3. Extra-long magnetic screwdriver
A long shaft reaches recessed motherboard standoffs, fan screws and drive mounts without forcing your hand into the case. Magnetization keeps a screw attached while you start the thread and can help retrieve hardware that falls behind a panel. Keep the driver aligned with the screw head so you do not strip it.

- STARTER SET: You want to replace a broken screen or battery in your smartphone? This toolkit provides the necessary tools for a basic electronic repair. Compatible with Apple, Samsung, Huawei, Sony and many more devices!
- FUNCTIONAL: Thanks to the foam insert and magnetic closure of the case, tools, components and bits can be safely stored and transported. Additionally, the inside of the lid serves as a sorting tray.
- MUST-HAVE: This tool-set was designed to repair any smartphone, game console, tablet, PC, etc. It also serves for most household DIY fixes.
- IFIXIT QUALITY: These 16 precision-bits (4 mm) are made of high-quality S2 steel. The precisely machined bits fit properly into the screws and protect both the bit and the fasteners from damages.
The long driver is an upgrade to the basic Phillips set, not a replacement for the correct size. Use #2 for most assembly and switch to #0 for an M.2 screw when required. Intel’s guidance specifically notes that magnetic drivers help prevent dropped screws and should not damage components.
Keeping small hardware under control
4. PC screw assortment kit
A spare-hardware kit can rescue a build when a case screw, motherboard standoff, washer or thumbscrew is missing. It is particularly useful for repair benches and for builders who move components between cases. Sort replacements by thread and length before installing them; a screw that is too long can damage a drive or board.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not assume every assortment contains the exact parts your case uses. Product quantities and contents vary by listing and change over time, so compare the kit’s thread types with the case manual. For a single build, the original screws and a household organizer may be enough.
5. Magnetic parts tray
A magnetic tray keeps screws from rolling across the desk and lets you separate motherboard, drive and side-panel hardware. The magnet holds steel screws while you move the tray, but it does not identify which screw belongs where; label sections or keep hardware with the manual.
Search terms such as “magnetic parts tray for PC building” describe the useful form factor, but a dedicated product is optional. Intel lists an egg carton, tackle box or other compartmented organizer as valid substitutes. Choose a tray with a shallow lip and a non-scratching base, and never place loose components such as memory modules directly on a magnetic surface.

Access, release tabs and static precautions
6. Plastic pry tools
Nylon or other non-metal pry tools help press PCIe slot locks, lift clips and remove a motherboard coin-cell battery without scratching a board or shorting contacts. Insert the tool only where the component manual indicates and apply steady, minimal force. If a tab does not move, stop and check the latch direction rather than levering harder.

Do not use them to force a heatsink, bend a shield or separate bonded parts. A fingertip is safer whenever it can reach the release mechanism.
7. Anti-static mat
An anti-static mat gives you a defined surface for placing a motherboard, graphics card or memory module while you work. It can make a bench feel more controlled, but no mat guarantees that electrostatic discharge cannot occur. Follow each component maker’s handling guidance, touch a grounded metal part before handling boards, and keep the workspace uncarpeted.
Intel describes a wrist strap as useful rather than strictly necessary. Whether you use a mat, a strap, both or neither, hold components by their edges, leave them in anti-static bags until needed, and avoid sliding boards across clothing or plastic packaging.
Cleaning and thermal-compound work
8. Cordless air duster or vacuum
Reusable cordless equipment avoids disposing of individual cans and is convenient for periodic dusting. Use only a device intended for electronics, keep the nozzle at a safe distance and follow the fan or component maker’s cleaning directions. Hold fan blades still while cleaning so they do not spin freely, and do not force dust deeper into a heatsink.

A conventional canned-air product may already meet your needs. The choice is about storage, reuse and handling preference; no measured performance advantage is established here. Never open a power supply to clean its interior.
9. Sticky putty
Removable adhesive putty is a last-resort pickup aid for a screw that has fallen into an inaccessible corner. A tiny amount can also brace a loose cable temporarily while you route it. Treat this as improvisation, not a standard PC material.
Keep tacky material away from exposed contacts, fan bearings, vents and hot surfaces. Test it on an inconspicuous painted area first, remove all residue, and never use it as a permanent mount for a heavy component.
10. Isopropyl alcohol and a microfiber cloth
When replacing a cooler, old thermal compound must be removed from the CPU heat spreader and cooler base. Intel specifies 90% isopropyl alcohol and a lint-free cloth for this job. Power the system down, let the parts cool, apply alcohol to the cloth rather than flooding the socket area, and wipe until no residue remains. Allow surfaces to dry completely before applying new compound.
Check whether your cooler arrives with paste pre-applied or in a syringe. Applying extra paste on top of an existing layer can interfere with the intended mounting procedure. Follow the CPU and cooler instructions for the amount and pattern.

Cable finishing and surface-safe fastening
11. Cable ties and a flush cutter
Cable ties bundle excess power and front-panel wiring so it stays behind the motherboard tray and away from fans. A flush cutter trims the tail close to the locking head, preventing sharp ends from snagging fingers or side panels. Tighten ties only enough to hold the bundle; crushing a cable can be worse than leaving it loose.
Twist ties or reusable Velcro straps perform the same basic job and are easier to reposition during a first build. Route cables so they do not obstruct fan blades, radiator airflow, drive bays or the side panel. Keep enough slack for future component removal.
12. Double-sided and color-coded tape
Tape can secure a loose cable, hold an RGB strip in place or mark connectors during a rebuild. Color coding is useful when several nearly identical leads are routed through a dark case. Select tape rated for the surface and temperatures it will encounter, and remove it slowly to avoid lifting paint or leaving adhesive.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Never cover ventilation openings, cable-release tabs, labels needed for service or electrical contacts. Tape should supplement proper routing and clips, not replace them.
Which substitute fits each problem?
| Problem | Purpose-built option | Acceptable substitute | Choose the specialist when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dark corner inside the case | LED flashlight gloves | Headlamp, flashlight, phone or desk lamp | You need both hands free and light aimed at your fingertips. |
| Screw out of reach | Needle-nose pliers or long magnetic driver | Short driver used carefully after tilting the case | The chassis has deep recesses or you frequently repair systems. |
| Mixed or rolling screws | Magnetic parts tray | Egg carton, tackle box or compartment box | You move hardware around the bench or work on several builds. |
| Release tab near a board | Plastic pry tool | Fingertip, if it reaches safely | A metal tool would risk scratches or a short. |
| Dust removal | Reusable electronic duster | Canned air used according to instructions | You clean systems regularly and want a reusable device. |
| Cable bundling | Flush cutter and cable ties | Velcro straps or twist ties | You want a permanent, compact bundle after testing the build. |
An all-in-one precision kit can reduce duplication. For example, CORSAIR’s PC DIY Precision Toolkit is described by its manufacturer as including assorted bits, a flexible extension and a magnetized cover that functions as a screw tray. Verify the included bit sizes and current availability before relying on any kit for a particular motherboard.
A safe workflow that uses the extras effectively
- Prepare the bench. Work on a stable, uncarpeted surface with movable light. Lay out the magnetic tray or compartments before opening hardware.
- Check the manuals. Identify the M.2 screw size, cooler mounting steps, PCIe release direction and any included thermal compound.
- Stage hardware by task. Keep motherboard screws, drive screws and case screws in separate sections. Do not mix unknown lengths.
- Install the board and cooler gently. Use the correct Phillips size, keep the driver vertical and stop if resistance feels abnormal.
- Manage static and contact surfaces. Ground yourself, handle boards by their edges and place removed parts on an appropriate anti-static surface.
- Test before final cable dressing. Confirm the system reaches firmware with the side panel off. Then route cables, trim ties and secure only what will not need repositioning.
- Clean during maintenance. Hold fans still while dusting, use 90% isopropyl alcohol and a lint-free cloth for old paste, and let surfaces dry before reassembly.
What to buy first
For a first build, prioritize a magnetic parts tray or household organizer and a movable light; they solve the two annoyances that occur in almost every case. Add a long magnetic screwdriver if your chassis has recessed mounts. Needle-nose pliers and plastic pry tools become more valuable when you repair or upgrade frequently. An anti-static mat, reusable duster, adhesive putty and decorative tape are situational purchases.
The twelve-tool list is best read as a menu, not a requirement list. Start with the Phillips drivers and safe workspace Intel specifies, then add one tool when a real task—dark visibility, dropped hardware, old thermal paste or cable finishing—justifies it.
