The strongest video game series of the 1980s and ’90s are the ones that paired landmark games with ideas that outlasted their original hardware. This ranking is subjective, not a universal consensus: it weighs influence on game design, the number and quality of era-defining entries, innovation for the time, and lasting recognition. It focuses on franchises established or shaped in those decades, rather than claiming that one genre or platform represents the whole era.

Release histories can vary by region and platform, so dates below are tied to the cited company timelines where possible. The order reflects editorial judgment; a list that prioritizes cultural reach over design influence could rank these differently.

How the ranking works

Each series is judged on the same four questions: Did it influence a genre or design convention? Did it produce multiple standout games during the 1980s or ’90s? Did it make meaningful use of the hardware and conventions of its time? And does it remain recognizable or relevant? Those are evaluative criteria, not claims that the cited companies endorse this order.

The decades were not a single uninterrupted boom. The 1983 North American video-game crash was a regional market crisis shaped by an oversaturated console market and competition from computer gaming, not the end of gaming worldwide. The subsequent decades saw Nintendo-era console landmarks, Sega’s rise with Sonic, and franchises that continued to evolve through the 1990s.

The 12 best video game series of the 1980s and ’90s

1. Super Mario

Super Mario earns the top spot for combining broad appeal with a remarkable run of design-defining platform games. Nintendo’s company history traces the NES-era development of Super Mario Bros., which it says quickly became a hit around the world, and later marks Super Mario 64’s 1996 release as a major Nintendo 64 milestone. The series’ place here rests on how convincingly it made both side-scrolling and 3D platforming feel like natural homes for precise movement and playful level design.

Its strongest case is not just longevity: the 1980s established the template, while Super Mario 64 showed that the series could adapt its core ideas to a new dimension without losing its identity. [Nintendo company history]

2. The Legend of Zelda

The Legend of Zelda helped establish the action-adventure series as a space for exploration, puzzle-solving, and discovery rather than a simple sequence of stages. Nintendo’s history places its development in the NES era alongside Super Mario Bros. The ranking reflects the strength of that early identity and the way its world-and-dungeon structure gave players room to make choices about where to go and what to investigate.

It ranks just below Mario because Mario’s platforming innovations were more broadly replicated across the medium, while Zelda’s influence is especially deep within adventure design. [Nintendo company history]

3. Metroid

Metroid belongs near the top for treating a game world as something to learn and revisit. Nintendo’s company history identifies it as one of the NES-era series developed during the company’s foundational period. Its exploration-led structure, ability-gated progression, and atmosphere made a distinctive alternative to the more linear action games of its time.

Its placement reflects a high design influence score, tempered by a narrower mainstream footprint than the top two. The series’ lasting recognition is especially visible in the enduring appeal of its exploration-and-progression formula. [Nintendo company history]

4. Castlevania

Castlevania built a long-running identity around gothic action, demanding combat, and memorable settings. Konami dates the original game to 1986 and documents a run of sequels and entries through the 1990s, including Castlevania: Symphony of the Night in 1997. That period breadth strengthens its case: it was not defined by one isolated success but by repeated reinvention within a recognizable world.

Symphony of the Night is a particularly important late-era landmark, but the series ranks fourth because its greatest strengths are concentrated in action-adventure and exploration rather than spanning as many genres as the entries above. Konami’s official history lists the later Castlevania Anniversary Collection for PlayStation 4, Steam, Xbox One, Epic, and Nintendo Switch. [Konami Castlevania history]

5. Sonic the Hedgehog

Sonic made speed a central design identity at a time when platform games were often associated with careful, deliberate movement. Sega dates the series debut to 1991 and identifies its initial North American release on Genesis; its timeline highlights fast action and the Ring system as elements of the game’s appeal. Because regional timing matters, that North American Genesis date should not be mistaken for a single worldwide launch date.

Sega says the first Sonic game sold more than 4 million copies, and its timeline associates the 1991 release with Genesis sales of more than 15 million units in North America and 8 million in Europe. Those are Sega’s company-published figures, not independently verified sales measurements. Sonic ranks fifth for a distinctive, instantly recognizable design and substantial cultural reach, though its era-specific run is shorter than the older Nintendo and Konami series above. [Sega company timeline]

6. Donkey Kong

Donkey Kong’s place in this list comes from its ability to change shape across the period. The franchise’s early arcade identity gave way to a platforming revival, and Nintendo records Donkey Kong Country’s release in 1994. That game’s visual presentation and tightly staged platforming helped make the series feel newly important in the 1990s rather than merely historic.

It ranks below Sonic because its identity shifted more dramatically between eras, but that reinvention is also a strength: few series on this list demonstrate so clearly that a recognizable name can support a new design direction. [Nintendo company history]

7. Pokémon

Pokémon arrived near the end of the ’90s, but its foundational idea was unusually cohesive: collecting creatures, building a team, and trading or battling with other players. Nintendo’s company history dates the Japanese release to 1996. That date matters: the franchise’s roots belong to the decade even though much of its global expansion and later cultural reach came afterward.

It ranks seventh because the series had less time to build a broad catalog within the period than the 1980s franchises above it. Its tightly linked mechanics, however, made it one of the most distinctive late-decade arrivals. [Nintendo company history]

8. Street Fighter

Street Fighter helped define the one-on-one fighting game as a contest of timing, spacing, and command-based moves. Its importance comes from making individual character styles and player skill central to the experience, a structure that became a durable foundation for competitive fighting games. It ranks eighth because its influence is immense within its genre, while the list gives some preference to series with broader design reach or a stronger multi-genre footprint.

9. Final Fantasy

Final Fantasy helped establish console role-playing games as a home for expansive worlds, party-based progression, and dramatic storytelling. The series’ ability to refresh its setting and characters across installments gave it room to evolve without relying on a single continuous cast. It ranks ninth because its strongest influence is concentrated in role-playing games, but its recurring reinvention made it one of the era’s most durable creative identities.

10. Mega Man

Mega Man turned demanding action into a system of choices. Players could tackle stages in different orders, defeat bosses, and use their acquired weapons to approach later challenges differently. That structure made experimentation part of the reward, while the series’ precise platforming gave it a high skill ceiling.

It sits tenth not because its design is minor, but because its influence is more specialized than that of the higher-ranked franchises. Its clear identity and repeated entries across the period still make it one of the defining action series of the era.

11. Mortal Kombat

Mortal Kombat became one of the most recognizable fighting-game franchises of the 1990s through its distinct visual style, dramatic finishing moves, and emphasis on spectacle. It helped make fighting games a mainstream conversation point beyond dedicated players. The ranking puts it below Street Fighter because its historical importance is more closely tied to presentation and cultural impact than to establishing the genre’s foundational play structure.

12. Doom

Doom closes the list as a series whose influence on first-person action is difficult to ignore. Its fast movement, maze-like spaces, and networked multiplayer helped shape expectations for PC shooters. It ranks twelfth because this selection weighs multi-entry strength across both decades and lasting recognition alongside individual influence; Doom’s impact is enormous, but the franchise’s most transformative early run is concentrated in the 1990s.

Why the order can change

A ranking that emphasizes cultural reach could move Sonic, Pokémon, or Mortal Kombat higher. One centered on genre influence might elevate Metroid, Street Fighter, or Doom. The list favors series that combine landmark games with a clear design legacy, while recognizing that the 1980s and ’90s produced influential work across arcade, console, and computer gaming rather than one dominant genre.
