The connection is a useful way to explore how politics and everyday consumer culture can be studied together—but the available records do not show Hall arguing that the Walkman caused or explained Thatcherism. Some of Hall’s work and context can be explored through online archive projects; that does not mean every text or recording is freely accessible.
What is Thatcherism in Stuart Hall’s writing?
Hall’s bibliography documents work on Thatcherism alongside writing about media. It lists “Thatcherism Today,” published in New Statesman and Society on 26 November 1993, and “The Television Discourse: Encoding and Decoding,” included in a 1993 introductory reader. These entries establish that Hall addressed both political change and how media meaning is made and interpreted. They do not, by themselves, establish a direct argument linking Thatcherism to the Walkman. Stuart Hall Foundation bibliography

How does the Sony Walkman fit into British cultural studies?
The Walkman appears here not just as an audio device, but as an object for cultural analysis. The 1997 book Doing Cultural Studies: The Story of the Sony Walkman was published by Sage in association with the Open University. Its authors include Stuart Hall, Paul Du Gay, Linda Janes, Hugh Mackay and Keith Negus; Open Library records it as 151 pages and lists later editions. The book makes the Walkman a case through which cultural studies can examine consumer life and media, rather than treating it only as a technical product. Open Library’s book record
The University of California, Irvine’s cultural-studies guide also lists the Walkman book and Hall’s “Encoding and Decoding” among primary sources for British cultural studies. That grouping is a helpful reading path, not evidence that Hall made a specific claim about a causal relationship between the Walkman and Thatcherism. UCI’s Cultural Studies guide
