It limits how much twisting force reaches a screw, allowing the clutch to slip before you strip a screw head, damage threads or drive a fastener too deep. Lower numbers provide less torque; higher numbers provide more. They are relative clutch stages, not universal torque measurements in inch-pounds or newton-metres.
What the numbers control
When the ring is set to a numbered position, the drill drives until the selected torque threshold is reached. At that point, the clutch slips and you hear or feel the familiar clicking. This is intentional: it prevents the motor from continuing to tighten the screw once the selected limit has been reached.

A low setting makes the clutch slip sooner. A high setting lets the drill apply more fastening force before slipping. The correct number depends on the screw, the material and the depth you want—not on a universal chart that applies to every Ryobi model.
Why the number is not a torque specification
Clutch markings describe stages. Ryobi manuals may list a stage count—for example, the CLD-1820 manual identifies 16 stages—but the printed number does not equal a calibrated torque value shared across all drills. Clutch behavior can also vary with battery charge, bit condition, temperature and the particular tool.

Which setting should you use for driving screws?
Start low, test the result and increase the setting in small steps. This approach is safer than beginning at maximum torque, especially when working with soft wood, thin sheet material or small screws.
- Fit the correct driver bit and select the drill’s low-speed range if you need maximum control.
- Set the clutch to a low number.
- Drive a screw into a scrap piece or an inconspicuous area of the workpiece.
- Check the depth and tightness. If the clutch slips before the screw reaches the desired depth, raise the setting slightly.
- Repeat until the screw seats correctly without crushing the surface or stripping the head.
How material and fastener size change the setting
| Job condition | Starting approach | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Small screw in soft wood | Low clutch stage | Soft material and a small fastener need less force; excessive torque can bury the head or split the wood. |
| Medium screw in ordinary timber | Low to medium stage, then test | The required force depends on screw diameter, pilot-hole size and wood density. |
| Large screw or dense hardwood | Increase gradually from a low stage | More resistance may require more torque, but maximum torque can still damage the fastener or material. |
| Machine screw or threaded insert | Use the lowest stage that fully seats it | Over-tightening can strip the mating threads; follow the fastener or equipment maker’s torque specification when one is provided. |
If the screw stops short, do not automatically switch to the highest number. Confirm that the bit is fully seated, the bit is not worn, the screw is suitable for the material and the pilot hole is correctly sized.
What the drill-bit icon means
For drilling a hole, rotate the collar to the drill-bit icon rather than a numbered stage. In this position the torque clutch is bypassed. Ryobi’s CLD-1820 operator manual states: “The clutch does not operate when the tool is used in the drill mode.” That allows the drill to continue delivering torque while the bit cuts.

Use ordinary drill mode for wood, metal and plastic, with the correct bit and speed. Because the clutch is bypassed, the tool will not protect the workpiece by slipping at a selected numbered threshold. Keep both hands positioned securely, clamp loose material and release the trigger if the bit binds.
Drill mode is not a guarantee against overload
Bypassing the clutch does not make the drill indestructible. A jammed bit can twist the tool suddenly, damage the bit or overheat the motor. Reduce pressure as the bit breaks through, clear chips when drilling metal and use cutting lubricant where the bit and material instructions call for it.
Do not confuse torque with speed
Most Ryobi drill drivers have a separate two-speed selector. The numbered ring controls fastening torque; the selector controls speed range.

| Control | What it changes | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| Numbered clutch ring | Maximum fastening torque before the clutch slips | Driving screws and other threaded fasteners |
| Low-speed range | Slower rotation with greater control and available torque | Large screws, starting holes and tasks needing careful alignment |
| High-speed range | Faster rotation with less emphasis on low-speed control | Faster drilling and lighter-duty work |
| Drill-bit icon | Disables the numbered clutch threshold | Drilling holes |
Choose the speed range before pulling the trigger. Changing a selector while the motor is running can damage the mechanism; let the drill stop first and follow the instructions for your model.
When to use hammer mode
Some Ryobi models add a hammer symbol or a separate hammer selector. Hammer mode is intended for masonry only when that specific model supports it. The repeated impact helps the bit work in brick, block or similar masonry.
- Use ordinary drill mode for wood, metal and plastic.
- Use hammer mode only with a masonry bit and only on a model that includes the feature.
- Do not assume a drill-bit icon means hammer operation; the symbols represent different functions.
- Wear eye protection and control dust when drilling masonry.
Common mistakes and quick fixes
The screw will not go deep enough
Raise the clutch one stage at a time. If it still slips, inspect the bit and screw, verify the speed selector and check for a pilot hole that is too small or too shallow.

The screw head is stripped
Stop using a slipping or damaged bit. Use the correct bit type and size, keep it aligned with the screw and lower the clutch setting. High speed and excessive downward force can make slipping and cam-out worse.
The screw is buried below the surface
Lower the clutch setting and test again. For delicate materials, finish the last part of the drive at a low speed so the clutch can stop the screw predictably.
The drill stops while making a hole
Check that the ring is on the drill-bit icon, not a numbered stage. Then reduce pressure, clear chips and make sure the battery is charged. If the bit is bound, release the trigger before freeing it.

Model differences matter
Ryobi’s controls are broadly consistent, but the number of clutch stages, speed ranges, chuck capacity and the presence of hammer mode vary by model and market. The CLD-1820 manual from 2019 documents 16 clutch stages, while the 18V ONE+ Drill Driver (R18DD3-0) is a separate model designation. Use the operator manual for the exact model printed on your tool before relying on a symbol or stage count.
For any fastening job with a specified torque—such as equipment assembly or a manufacturer-critical repair—use a calibrated torque tool or the equipment maker’s stated procedure. A Ryobi clutch number alone cannot verify that torque.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I leave the ring on the drill-bit icon for every task?
You can, but it removes the clutch’s slip protection. Use the drill-bit icon for hole drilling; use a numbered stage when driving screws so the clutch can limit fastening torque.
Does a higher number always mean a faster drill?
No. Higher numbers increase the clutch’s torque threshold. Rotation speed is controlled by the separate speed selector and trigger.
