Thales has unveiled BeamTracker, a vehicle-agnostic radar electronic-support-measures (RESM) and electronic-intelligence (ELINT) payload designed for Class 1 and Class 2 unmanned aerial vehicles. The approximately 5 kg passive sensor covers 1–18 GHz, provides a 100° instantaneous field of view and is entering low-rate initial production ahead of its first contracts.
What Thales announced
Thales DMS France presented BeamTracker at its Gémenos site in southern France on 9 October 2026. The company describes it as a low-size, weight and power (SWaP) payload for small UAVs and other uncrewed platforms, rather than a system tied to one aircraft design.

Janes reported that low-rate initial production had already begun when the system was unveiled. Thales said it expected first contracts, but the announcement did not identify a customer, contract value, delivery schedule or confirmed operational deployment.

What BeamTracker does
BeamTracker is a passive electronic-warfare sensor. It listens for radar emissions, estimates the direction from which they arrive and supplies information for early warning, situational awareness and intelligence collection. The intended settings include maritime operations and battlefield environments.

Detecting radar emissions from a drone
Yes. BeamTracker is designed to detect and characterize radar emissions while carried by a UAV or another uncrewed vehicle. Its disclosed role is receiving and measuring signals; the sources do not describe it as an active jammer or as a system that attacks an emitter.
RESM and ELINT roles
RESM refers to radar electronic-support measures: collecting and analyzing radar signals to support awareness of potential threats. ELINT extends that collection function into electronic intelligence. In practice, BeamTracker can provide an airborne platform with information about detected emitters and their bearing, but the public announcement does not specify a complete emitter database, identification-confidence method or geolocation accuracy beyond the bearing figure.

How the sensing architecture is built
BeamTracker uses amplitude-comparison direction finding. That approach compares received signal levels across antenna channels to estimate an emitter’s bearing. Thales says its processing chains draw on the company’s Sentinel digital RESM product.
The design also builds on CURCO, a compact radar-ESM demonstrator. Janes reported that CURCO was tested in French Navy exercises in 2024 and 2025. Thales’s 2024 Universal Registration Document separately records CURCO participation in French Navy and NATO drone exercises. Those activities provide a stated development lineage, but they do not establish that BeamTracker itself has completed an operational deployment.
Which UAVs can carry it?
Thales names Class 1 and Class 2 UAVs as the target platform categories. Those classes cover small uncrewed aircraft, but BeamTracker’s announcement does not name a specific airframe, launch system or integration partner.

The “vehicle-agnostic” description means the payload is intended to be integrated across multiple uncrewed platforms rather than designed around one proprietary vehicle. The approximately 5 kg mass is central to that proposition, although no public power-draw figure or aircraft-level payload-margin requirement has been released.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhy the debut matters
Airborne electronic-support suites have traditionally been associated with larger, more expensive aircraft and substantial payload, power and integration demands. BeamTracker targets the space between those systems and very small UAV payloads that cannot carry a full-size suite.
Making radar surveillance available on smaller aircraft could move warning and collection closer to the tactical edge. A vehicle-agnostic design could also give operators more choices when integrating the sensor. Those are implications of the disclosed mass, target UAV classes and stated missions; the available sources do not provide comparative purchase prices, power figures, detection ranges or head-to-head performance data.

Passive surveillance is not active jamming
BeamTracker’s disclosed function is reception, measurement and direction finding. Nothing in the announcement says that it generates jamming or other electromagnetic attack effects. Thales markets active electromagnetic-attack products separately, but those products should not be treated as features of BeamTracker.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Production status and availability
BeamTracker is beyond the purely conceptual stage: Thales reported low-rate initial production in October 2026. That status normally indicates an early manufacturing phase before broader procurement, not proof of large-scale fielding.
No named buyer, signed contract, unit price, delivery timetable or operational user was disclosed. Organisations assessing the payload would therefore need direct information from Thales about integration interfaces, environmental qualification, software support, training, sustainment and the transition from low-rate production to full-rate orders.

What to examine when comparing airborne EW sensors
BeamTracker’s published figures are most useful when placed beside the same categories for another sensor:
- Payload burden: mass and electrical power required from the host aircraft.
- Signal access: frequency coverage and instantaneous bandwidth.
- Angular performance: field of view and direction-finding error.
- Integration: supported UAV classes, interfaces and whether the design is vehicle-agnostic.
- Maturity: demonstrator testing, low-rate production, contracts and evidence of operational deployment.
- Mission scope: warning, situational awareness, ELINT collection or active jamming.
On the information released so far, BeamTracker is a compact passive RESM/ELINT payload entering initial production, not a disclosed active-attack system or a fielded program with publicly identified customers.
