Since Valve’s May 2025 update, Create Server offers Local, Friends Only, Unlisted and Listed, with Unlisted selected by default. Choose Local for a same-network game. If discovery still fails, enable LAN mode with sv_lan 1, reload the map, and join directly with the host computer’s private IP using connect <internal-ip>:<port>. The steps below separate a visibility mistake from firewall, network and port problems.

Why a running TF2 server may not appear
A server can be active and still absent from the LAN tab because “running” and “discoverable” are different states. TF2 now exposes four visibility choices in its Create Server interface. Local is intended for players on the same local network; Friends Only and Listed use Steam’s networking and invitation/listing behavior; Unlisted keeps the session out of normal listings while still allowing an appropriate direct or invited join. Unlisted is the post-May-2025 default, so a newly created game can be working exactly as configured while appearing to be missing.

The old habit of opening the developer console and entering only map <mapname> is another source of confusion. After the interface change, that command alone may load a map without creating a joinable session with the expected visibility. Use the current Create Server flow, or explicitly set LAN mode and reinitialize the map.
Finally, browser discovery depends on local network broadcasts, firewall rules and compatible client ports. A host and client on different guest networks, a VPN, a university network or a wireless network with client isolation can prevent the listing even when both computers have internet access.

Fastest fix: a five-minute sequence
- Verify the network. Put both computers on the same home router and the same LAN or Wi-Fi network, not one on a guest SSID and one on the main network. Do not test with the public internet address.
- Recreate the game through Create Server. In TF2, open the Create Server screen and select Local when the players are on the same network. Start the map and wait for the host to finish loading.
- Set LAN mode if necessary. Open the host console and enter
sv_lan 1. If the server was already running, reload the map or use the explicit sequencesv_lan 1; heartbeat; changelevel <map>. - Refresh discovery. On the client, open the LAN tab and refresh it after the host has completed the level change. A listing made before the host changed level may be stale.
- Bypass the browser if needed. On the host, run
statusand identify its private address and listening port. On the client, open the console and runconnect <private-ip>:<port>.
If direct connection works, the game and route are functional; the remaining issue is discovery or the selected visibility. If direct connection fails too, continue with the firewall, network and port checks below.
Use the current Create Server visibility controls
Local
Select Local for a conventional LAN match. This is the clearest choice when every player is connected to the same router and you want the game visible through the LAN tab. It does not repair a blocked firewall or a network that isolates wireless clients, but it prevents an Unlisted setting from hiding an otherwise healthy local game.

Friends Only
Friends Only is a Steam-networking visibility choice for inviting or allowing Steam friends rather than publishing a broadly discoverable server. It is useful when players are not relying on the LAN browser, but it is not the same as a LAN-only broadcast. A client may need to join through Steam’s invite or friends interface.
Unlisted
Unlisted is the default after the May 2025 update. It is deliberately absent from ordinary listings. If you left the default unchanged, the absence of a server in the browser is expected behavior, not evidence that the map failed to load.
Listed
Listed uses Steam networking behavior intended for a discoverable session. It is different from Local because the join path can involve Steam’s relay infrastructure rather than only a local broadcast. Choose it only when that visibility is what you want; changing to Listed will not overcome a host firewall that blocks the game process.
Confirm both computers are truly on the same LAN
Steam’s LAN guidance requires the client to be local to the server. “Both computers have internet” is not sufficient: a guest network, hotel network, campus policy or router setting can put them in separate broadcast domains. Check the following before changing console variables:

- Connect both systems to the same router, preferably the same network name and frequency where the router does not isolate clients.
- Disable guest-network or wireless-client-isolation features for the test, or move both systems to the main LAN.
- Temporarily disconnect VPN software and remove proxy settings that can alter routing or local discovery.
- On the host, identify the private IPv4 address assigned by the router. It commonly belongs to a private range, but use the exact address shown by the operating system rather than guessing.
- Do not use the router’s public or external IP address when the client is behind that same router. Steam specifically requires a same-router client to connect to the server’s internal address.
A wired test can remove wireless isolation and interference as variables. A Cat6 Ethernet cable between each computer and the router provides a simple wired LAN path, but it cannot correct an Unlisted visibility choice or an incorrect sv_lan value.
Set sv_lan correctly and reload the map
sv_lan 1 tells the host to operate in LAN mode. It is the appropriate value when the server should be reachable only on the local network. The Steam-documented setting for an internet server is sv_lan 0; using the wrong value can make the server behave differently from the intended join method.
Run the command on the host, not the client. If the server was launched by typing only a map command, use a complete reset:
- Open the developer console on the host.
- Enter
sv_lan 1. - Enter
heartbeatso the server announces its current state. - Enter
changelevel <mapname>, replacing the placeholder with the map you want. - Wait until the new map has loaded, then run
status. - Give the client the private address and port reported by
status; the client then runsconnect <internal-ip>:<port>.
Reloading matters because the visibility and network state may not be reflected in an already-running map session. If the command is rejected or appears to have no effect, confirm that the console is enabled, that you are entering it on the host, and that the map actually changes after the command.
Join by IP when the LAN tab is empty
Direct connection bypasses browser discovery and is the most useful diagnostic. On the host, the status output identifies the active server and its connection address. Use the host’s private address, not an address copied from an external “what is my IP” page.
- Start the server and wait for the map to load.
- Open the host console and run
status. - Record the internal IP and port shown for the running server.
- On the client, open the console and enter
connect <internal-ip>:<port>. - Watch for the connection result. A successful load proves that the route and server are working even if the LAN browser remains blank.
If the client reports that it cannot connect, check that the address was copied exactly, that the host is still on the same network, and that the host firewall allows TF2. If the host’s address changed after reconnecting to Wi-Fi, run status again rather than reusing the old address.

Firewall, router and restricted-network checks
A recent Steam or game update can cause a firewall rule to be removed, disabled or changed. Allow Steam and TF2 through the host firewall, and apply the equivalent allowance on the client if its security software blocks outbound connections. Test again after the rule is active; do not assume that an earlier “Allow” prompt still represents the current executable.
Network policy can block required traffic even when local settings are correct. Steam identifies university networks, proxies, internet-service-provider restrictions and router policies as possible causes. If you are testing on managed Wi-Fi, move both computers to a private home network or ask the network administrator whether peer-to-peer traffic is filtered. A VPN can also route the game away from the local interface, so disconnect it during diagnosis.
- Host firewall symptom: the server starts locally, but direct connection from another computer times out. Permit the game and Steam processes on the host.
- Client firewall symptom: the client sees a listing but fails while joining. Permit outbound TF2 and Steam traffic on the client.
- Router isolation symptom: both devices receive addresses from the router, but neither can reach the other. Disable guest isolation or use a wired/main-LAN connection.
- Managed-network symptom: the same setup works at home but not at school, work or a hotel. The network may block peer traffic or required ports; changing TF2 visibility cannot override that policy.
Only open or forward ports when you deliberately need an internet-facing setup. A same-LAN game should use the private address and does not require exposing the server to the public internet.
Resolve client-port conflicts on multiple computers
Steam documents a default clientport of 27005 and notes that only one game using that port can be active on the same LAN. If two TF2 clients are launched with the same client port, one may fail to appear, fail to connect or behave inconsistently.
Assign each machine a distinct client port between 27005 and 27032. For example, leave one computer at 27005 and start the second with a different value such as -clientport 27006. Add the launch option in TF2’s Steam launch-options field, restart the game, and test again. Do not assign the same value to two simultaneously active clients on the LAN.
Port uniqueness is separate from the server’s listening port. Changing a client port will not make an Unlisted server appear, and it will not fix a blocked firewall. Use it when multiple clients share a router and the symptoms point to an address or session collision.

Local LAN mode versus Steam Networking
| Option | Who can discover or join | Network path | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Local | Players on the same local network, subject to firewall and router rules | Direct local-network connectivity | Private home-LAN matches |
| Friends Only | Steam friends using the appropriate invite or friends interface | Steam networking | Invited friends when browser discovery is not required |
| Unlisted | Not shown in normal listings; players need an appropriate invite or direct method | Steam networking behavior | A session intentionally kept out of listings |
| Listed | Players eligible to discover a listed Steam session | Steam networking, potentially using relay infrastructure | A discoverable session beyond a simple LAN broadcast |
Valve documents Steam Datagram Relay as a self-hosting option that can avoid traditional port forwarding. That changes how players reach the server, but it does not make a Local game magically visible when a firewall blocks traffic. Think of visibility as the invitation and discovery policy, and connectivity as the actual route between client and host; both must be correct.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Browser discovery versus direct IP
| Method | Advantages | Limitations |
|---|---|---|
| LAN browser | No address typing; convenient for a correctly configured Local server | Depends on broadcasts, refresh timing, client isolation and firewall rules |
Direct connect |
Bypasses missing listings and gives a clear reachability test | Requires the current private IP and port; fails if the route or firewall is blocked |
Use the browser for convenience after the configuration is correct. Use direct IP first when you need to distinguish “not listed” from “not reachable.” A direct connection that succeeds is evidence that the server itself is healthy; it does not prove that browser discovery will work on every network.
Wi-Fi and Ethernet: what changing the link can and cannot do
Wi-Fi discovery can fail because of interference, roaming between access points or client-isolation settings. Connecting both computers to the router with Ethernet provides a simpler path and often makes troubleshooting easier. It is an optional diagnostic aid, not a substitute for selecting Local or setting sv_lan 1.
If Ethernet fixes the problem, inspect the wireless configuration rather than assuming TF2 was at fault. Look for separate guest and main SSIDs, access-point isolation and mesh nodes that prevent peer-to-peer traffic. If Ethernet changes nothing, return to visibility, firewall and port checks; the physical link was not the root cause.
Symptom-based troubleshooting
The server is missing only from the LAN tab
Check that the host selected Local rather than accepting Unlisted, then refresh the client after the host changes level. If direct IP works, leave the game running and investigate wireless isolation or firewall discovery rules instead of changing unrelated console variables.
The server appears, but joining fails
Run status again and connect to the current private address and port. Confirm that both computers remain on the same network, allow TF2 through both firewalls, and look for a duplicate client port when more than one game is active on the LAN.

sv_lan 1 does not make the server appear
The command controls LAN mode; it does not force a browser listing. Reload the map after setting it, verify that the host—not the client—received the command, and ensure the Create Server visibility is Local. Then test with direct connect to separate reachability from discovery.
Only one of two clients can connect
Assign distinct client ports in the documented 27005–27032 range and restart both games. Also check that the second computer is not on a guest network or blocked by a separate firewall profile.
The setup works at home but not on campus or a managed network
Assume a network policy issue first. Steam identifies proxies, institutional networks and blocked required ports as possible causes. Test on a private network where peer traffic is permitted, or use a Steam-networking visibility option when it matches your intended audience and the network allows Steam connectivity.
A clean repeatable setup
For future LAN sessions, use this order so each layer is established before the next one is tested:
- Connect all players to the same non-guest network.
- Start TF2 through Create Server and choose Local.
- Set
sv_lan 1on the host if the session must be LAN-only. - Change level or restart the map so the setting is active.
- Allow Steam and TF2 through the host and client firewalls.
- Refresh the LAN tab only after the host is fully loaded.
- If the listing is absent, run
statusand useconnect <internal-ip>:<port>. - If multiple clients share the LAN, give each a unique
clientport. - Use Ethernet as a test when Wi-Fi isolation or interference remains suspected.
This sequence avoids treating a visibility setting as a network failure. It also gives you a definitive fallback: when the private address accepts a direct connection, the game can be played while you decide whether browser discovery is worth repairing.
