Choose smooth PEI when you want a smooth underside, print PLA with small contact areas or sharp corners, or need the finish for which your filament manufacturer provides settings. Neither surface is universally better. Adhesion and release depend on the exact plate coating, printer, filament, bed temperature, first-layer calibration, and cleaning method.
The safest choice is therefore product-specific: verify the plate’s printer fit and material table before buying, then follow that plate maker’s cleaning and separation-layer instructions. “PEI” describes a surface family, not one standardized performance specification.

What textured and smooth PEI plates actually change
Both plates use a PEI-based surface to help molten filament bond during the first layer. The visible finish changes how the underside looks and can change how strongly particular materials adhere or release. A textured sheet has a patterned coating that transfers a fine texture to the print. A smooth sheet leaves a smooth surface; some products describe that result as smooth and matte rather than glossy.

Surface texture is not a universal adhesion rating. A rougher appearance does not guarantee stronger grip for every filament, and a smooth plate is not automatically weak. The same material can behave differently on two sheets sold as PEI because coating chemistry, texture depth, spring-steel thickness, temperature recommendations, and cleaning instructions differ.

Prusa Research notes that the cosmetic pattern on its textured sheets can vary from sheet to sheet. That means two compatible textured plates may produce slightly different-looking undersides even when the printer and slicer settings are unchanged. Treat the finish as a functional and visual choice, not a promise of identical cosmetic output.
Quick decision: which surface fits your job?
| Your priority | Usually the better starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Patterned underside is desirable | Textured PEI | The coating transfers its texture to the first layer. |
| Plain, smooth underside | Smooth PEI | The contact surface does not imprint a texture pattern. |
| Frequent PETG printing | Textured PEI, if the plate maker lists PETG | Prusa calls its textured sheet ideal for extensive PETG use; its documentation says prints release after cooling. Bambu Lab lists no glue for PETG on the textured side of its cited dual-texture plate. |
| PLA parts with sharp corners or a small first-layer footprint | Smooth PEI, if supported by the printer | Prusa describes its smooth sheet as ideal for PLA and says those geometries are less likely to detach on that sheet. |
| Flexible TPU or TPEE | Textured PEI, when explicitly supported | Prusa lists its textured sheet for flexible filaments and warns that smooth PEI can grip TPU too strongly. |
| ABS, ASA, nylon, or polycarbonate blends | Whichever surface’s manual specifies the required separation layer | Recommendations differ by product. Prusa requires glue-stick separation on its textured sheet for several engineering materials, while its smooth-sheet guidance and Bambu’s table use different combinations. |
This table is a starting point, not a substitute for the exact plate’s instructions. A material listed as compatible on one manufacturer’s sheet may require glue, a different temperature, or a different surface on another.
Textured PEI: strengths, limits, and best uses
Why users choose it
- Distinct underside: The texture is transferred to the print, which can hide minor first-layer lines and provide a deliberately patterned appearance.
- Convenient release for supported materials: Prusa states that prints on its textured sheet automatically detach after the sheet cools. Cooling lets the print and plate contract differently, reducing the bond.
- Good fit for PETG and flexible filament on specified sheets: Prusa lists extensive PETG, CPE, and TPEE/TPU use for its powder-coated Ultem PEI sheet. Its guidance says no glue is needed for TPU/TPEE on that sheet.
- Potentially longer service under some filaments: Prusa describes its textured coating as more durable than its smooth sheet with some filaments, while also warning that the surface is not scratch-resistant.
Where textured PEI can be less convenient
Small PLA parts can have less effective contact area because only the peaks of the texture touch the filament. Prusa notes that small PLA prints may need a brim on its textured sheet. A brim increases the bonded perimeter and can prevent corners from lifting.
The texture also makes the underside unsuitable when you need a flat, visually uniform surface. A part that must sit flush against another component may require a smooth face, or you may need to orient the model so the textured side is hidden.
Textured coating is not scratch-proof. Avoid cutting tools and aggressive scraping. Prusa recommends cooling and flexing its sheet to remove prints instead of using knives or spatulas.

Material cautions
Do not assume “textured” means glue-free for every engineering filament. Prusa requires a glue-stick separation layer on its textured sheet for ASA, ABS, nylon, and PC Blend. The glue is a release layer as much as an adhesion aid: it prevents a high-temperature material from bonding so strongly that the coating is damaged.
For the Bambu Lab dual-texture plate cited in the manufacturer’s current table, PLA, PLA-CF, and PLA-GF are listed at 45–65°C with no glue on either side; PETG and PETG-CF at 60–80°C with glue on the smooth side and none on the textured side; ABS and ASA at 90–100°C with glue on the smooth side and none on the textured side. These values apply to that cited plate and are not universal PEI settings.

Smooth PEI: strengths, limits, and best uses
Why users choose it
- Uniform underside: The contact face is smooth or matte, which is preferable for visible bottoms, labels, gaskets, and parts that must sit on a flat surface.
- Strong PLA grip: Prusa describes its smooth PEI sheet as ideal for PLA. It specifically says sharp corners and small first-layer areas are less likely to detach on that sheet.
- Broad documented material range: Prusa lists PLA, HIPS, ABS/ASA, and metal- or wood-filled composite materials as ideal uses for its smooth sheet.
- Occasional acetone refresh on one product: Prusa permits acetone sparingly on its smooth sheet, about once or twice per month. That permission is product-specific and must not be transferred to other smooth PEI plates.
Where smooth PEI can be risky
A clean, degreased smooth PEI surface can grip PETG so strongly that removing the part peels the PEI and permanently damages the sheet. Prusa’s general surface-preparation guidance recommends another sheet type or a thin PVA glue layer as a separation layer for PETG.
The same over-adhesion issue can occur with TPU and other flexible materials. Prusa warns that TPU can adhere too strongly to smooth PEI. If a filament’s instructions call for a release layer, apply it evenly and thinly rather than increasing first-layer pressure.
Smooth sheets are consumables. Prusa says the coating diminishes over time and can become smoother with extended use, but it gives no guaranteed service life. A sheet that has lost grip, developed deep scratches, or has permanent coating damage should be replaced rather than aggressively resurfaced.

Bambu’s cited plate lists 45–65°C and no glue on either side. | Prusa calls smooth PEI ideal for PLA and says sharp corners or small first-layer areas are less likely to detach. | There is no manufacturer-backed universal winner. Choose by underside finish, footprint, and the exact plate’s settings. |
| PETG | Prusa calls its textured sheet ideal for extensive PETG. Bambu lists 60–80°C and no glue on the textured side of its cited plate. | Prusa warns of excessive grip and recommends another sheet or PVA as a separation layer. Bambu lists glue on the smooth side. | Favor the documented textured option when your plate supports it. |
| TPU/TPEE | Prusa lists its textured sheet as ideal for flexible filaments and says no glue is needed for TPU/TPEE on that sheet. | Prusa warns that smooth PEI can adhere too strongly to TPU. | Check the filament and plate manuals together; do not generalize across brands. |
| ABS/ASA | Prusa requires a glue-stick separation layer on its textured sheet. Bambu lists 90–100°C and no glue on the textured side of its cited plate. | Prusa lists ABS/ASA among ideal uses but says selected materials may need protection. Bambu lists glue on the smooth side at 90–100°C. | Use the exact manufacturer table; high-temperature compatibility is not interchangeable. |
| Nylon and PC Blend | Prusa requires a glue-stick separation layer on its textured sheet. | Prusa says these materials may need a thin protective separation layer on smooth PEI. | Separate the print from the coating rather than maximizing raw adhesion. |
| HIPS and filled composites | Specific compatibility is not stated in the cited textured-sheet guidance. | Prusa lists HIPS and metal/wood composite materials as ideal uses for its smooth sheet. | Use a plate whose documentation names the exact formulation. |
Adhesion: why online answers disagree
Questions such as “Textured pei plate or Smooth PEI plate?” and “For printing PLA, which one has better adhesion?” cannot be answered independently of the setup. A first layer can fail because the plate is dirty, the nozzle is too high, the bed is too cool, the sheet is warped, the filament is damp, or the part has too little contact area. Changing texture may mask one of those causes without fixing it.
No controlled head-to-head statistic establishes that one PEI finish delivers a particular percentage improvement in adhesion, durability, or print success. Manufacturer guidance is product-specific rather than a comparative laboratory study. For PLA, the most defensible answer is that both surfaces can work; the exact sheet and first-layer geometry determine which is more reliable.
Small footprints and sharp corners
A small part concentrates peel forces into a short perimeter. On a textured surface, the actual bonded area can be lower than the part’s nominal footprint. Add a brim, enlarge the first layer where the design allows, lower the first-layer speed, and confirm the nozzle is correctly calibrated before blaming the coating.
Large or high-temperature parts
Large ABS, ASA, nylon, and PC parts contract as they cool. Bed temperature, enclosure conditions, drafts, and a separation layer matter more than the word “PEI” on the product label. Follow the plate maker’s recommended temperature range and adhesive method; do not copy a setting from a different printer or sheet.
Cleaning and maintenance without damaging the coating
Use the plate’s own cleaning method
Prusa’s general guidance recommends cleaning a cold surface with about 90% or stronger isopropyl alcohol or denatured ethyl alcohol and an unscented paper towel. It warns that skin-care products can leave oils. Its textured-sheet page prohibits acetone, while its smooth-sheet page permits acetone sparingly, about one or two times per month.

Bambu Lab’s cited dual-texture plate page instead recommends detergent and water, prohibits acetone, and says to let the plate cool before removing prints. These instructions are not contradictory once their product scope is clear: they apply to different plates. Use the manual for the sheet you actually own.
A repeatable cleaning routine
- Let the plate cool. Removing a hot print or wiping a hot coating can increase the chance of damage and burns.
- Remove the sheet according to the printer maker’s procedure and place it on a clean, stable surface.
- Wash or wipe it using the specified detergent or alcohol method. Use a lint-free or unscented disposable towel and avoid touching the print area afterward.
- Inspect for fingerprints, filament residue, gouges, bubbling, or areas where the coating has lifted.
- Reinstall the sheet in the correct orientation and rerun the printer’s required first-layer check if the plate was removed or replaced.
Never treat acetone as a universal PEI cleaner. It can damage a coating that is not rated for it. Likewise, do not apply glue simply because a print failed: some plates need glue for separation, some need it for adhesion, and some list no glue for that material.
Removing a stuck print
First allow the plate and print to cool. If the manufacturer says the sheet can be flexed, flex it gently to break the bond. Do not lever a knife against the coating. On a smooth sheet holding PETG or TPU, stop increasing force; add the manufacturer-approved separation layer for the next print and consider another sheet for that material.

Build plates are not universal accessories. Confirm all of the following before ordering:
- Printer family and model: Mounting magnets, locating notches, sensors, and firmware assumptions can differ even within one manufacturer.
- Physical dimensions: The plate must match the printer’s usable area and leave room for the frame and clips. Bambu’s cited dual-texture product lists usable print sizes of 256 × 256 mm and 180 × 180 mm; verify the model-specific listing rather than assuming those dimensions fit your machine.
- Thickness and temperature behavior: A different thickness can alter nozzle-to-bed distance and heat-up behavior.
- Surface orientation: Dual-sided plates may have different material tables for each face.
- Filament and adhesive table: Confirm temperatures, glue requirements, and whether the manufacturer warns against a particular material.
- Cleaning restrictions: Check whether the plate permits alcohol, detergent, acetone, or only a specified method.
Prusa notes that CORE One and MK-series sheets are interchangeable within its product families, although the designs differ. That does not establish cross-brand compatibility. A plate that physically fits may still misread a sensor, sit at the wrong height, or use a coating unsuitable for your filament.

A practical selection workflow
- Define the underside requirement. Pick textured PEI if a pattern is useful or acceptable; pick smooth PEI for a plain underside.
- List the filaments you actually print. Mark PETG, TPU, ABS, ASA, nylon, PC blends, and filled materials separately because their release needs differ.
- Read the exact manufacturer table. Record bed temperature, glue requirement, and any warning about over-adhesion.
- Verify fit. Match model, dimensions, magnetic arrangement, locating features, and plate thickness.
- Prepare the surface correctly. Clean using the specified method and avoid touching the print area.
- Calibrate the first layer. A nozzle that is too far away loses grip; one that is too close can over-compress the first layer and make release difficult.
- Run a small test. Use a flat test pattern or a representative part before committing an expensive filament or long print.
- Record what works. Note plate side, material, bed temperature, first-layer height, speed, and adhesive. Those settings belong to that plate-and-filament combination, not to PEI in general.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The first layer peels at the corners
- Clean the cold plate using its approved method.
- Check first-layer height and bed mesh calibration.
- Increase bed temperature only within the plate and filament maker’s stated range.
- Reduce first-layer speed and drafts.
- Add a brim for a small PLA print on a textured sheet, as Prusa recommends for that situation.
- For ABS or ASA, address enclosure and cooling conditions before changing plate finish.
The print will not release after cooling
- Do not pry with a knife or metal spatula against the coating.
- Flex the sheet only if its manufacturer permits it.
- Check whether the filament is known to over-adhere to that surface. PETG and TPU on smooth PEI are documented examples in Prusa’s guidance.
- Use the specified PVA or glue-stick separation layer on the next print, or move that filament to the recommended plate type.
Adhesion is inconsistent from print to print
- Look for fingerprints, residue, or an uneven cleaning film.
- Confirm the plate is seated in the same orientation and that magnets or locating features are clean.
- Check nozzle wear, first-layer calibration, filament moisture, and bed-temperature consistency.
- Do not switch between incompatible cleaning chemicals; follow one documented method for that plate.
The underside looks different than expected
A textured plate intentionally transfers its pattern, and Prusa says the cosmetic pattern can vary between sheets. On a smooth plate, a matte appearance may still be normal. Inspect for actual coating damage rather than treating every finish variation as a printing fault.
Durability, replacement, and operating cost
Both finishes are consumables. Prusa says its coatings diminish over time and provides no guaranteed service life. Smooth PEI can become smoother with extended use; textured PEI is not scratch-resistant. Abrasive cleaning, metal tools, excessive first-layer compression, and over-adhered materials shorten useful life.
Replace a sheet when cleaning no longer restores consistent adhesion, when the coating has lifted or peeled, or when scratches alter the first layer across the usable area. A plate that is merely dirty needs cleaning; a plate with irreversible coating damage needs replacement. Keeping a second surface for materials that over-adhere can cost less than repeatedly damaging one general-purpose sheet.

- Assuming all PEI sheets share settings: They do not. Temperature and glue tables are product-specific.
- Using acetone automatically: Some smooth sheets permit occasional use; some textured and dual-texture products prohibit it.
- Adding glue to every print: Glue may be unnecessary, may reduce adhesion, or may be required as a release layer depending on material and surface.
- Judging adhesion from texture alone: First-layer calibration and cleanliness often dominate the result.
- Removing a hot print aggressively: Cooling and gentle flexing are safer where the manufacturer allows them.
- Buying by dimensions only: Sensors, magnets, notches, thickness, and firmware assumptions also affect compatibility.
- Expecting a universal PLA verdict: The available manufacturer guidance does not establish a head-to-head winner for every PLA setup.
Bottom-line selection
Pick textured PEI for a patterned underside and for PETG or flexible materials when the specific sheet lists them and provides a safe release method. Pick smooth PEI for a smooth underside and for PLA parts whose small footprint or sharp corners benefit from the stronger, documented grip of a smooth sheet. For ABS, ASA, nylon, PC blends, and other demanding materials, let the plate maker’s separation-layer and temperature table decide.
Whichever finish you choose, match the plate to the printer, clean it exactly as documented, calibrate the first layer, and treat adhesion and release as a complete system rather than a property of the word “PEI.”
