Textron’s current figures cover several light-jet options, but they are published performance references rather than guaranteed city-to-city distances. An owner may fly a privately used Citation only after meeting all applicable FAA certificate, type-rating, training, medical and currency requirements. Carrying passengers for compensation is a separate, regulated charter activity. Ownership planning must account for acquisition, training, hangar, insurance, maintenance, fuel, reserves and resale—not just the aircraft’s purchase price.
Current Citation range and seating at a glance
Textron Aviation’s current product information gives these headline maximums. The figures identify the exact generation because seating and equipment can change between variants.

| Model | Published maximum range | Maximum occupants | Pilot and variant note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Citation M2 Gen3 | 1,550 nautical miles | 7 | Textron describes the aircraft as suited to single-pilot operation. |
| Citation CJ3 Gen3 | 2,040 nautical miles | 9 | Compare payload, runway and reserve assumptions for the intended mission. |
| Citation CJ4 Gen3 | 2,165 nautical miles | 10 | Textron lists the aircraft as single-pilot certified. |
| Citation CJ4 Gen2 | 2,165 nautical miles | Up to 11 | The product card reports a seating configuration of up to 11 occupants; identify the exact aircraft before planning. |
These are Textron headline values, not promises that a jet can fly any route of the same length. Product-card performance is based on stated assumptions, including standard-day, zero-wind conditions and NBAA instrument-flight-rules reserves. Actual dispatch performance changes with payload, baggage, temperature, wind, runway, altitude, routing, reserve policy and regulatory requirements.

How to interpret a Citation’s published range
Maximum range is a reference point
A nautical-mile maximum helps compare aircraft in the same category, but it is not a guaranteed nonstop route distance. A flight carrying a full cabin and heavy baggage may have less available range than a lightly loaded demonstration profile. Headwinds increase fuel burn and flight time, while runway limits can restrict the fuel that can be loaded for a particular departure.

What changes the result on a real trip
- Payload: Passengers, bags and other carried weight reduce the fuel or reserve margin available for the trip.
- Weather: Wind, temperature, storms and icing can alter routing, fuel burn and diversion requirements.
- Airport performance: Runway length, elevation, temperature and obstacle procedures affect takeoff weight and destination choices.
- Reserves: The published figures use an NBAA IFR-reserve assumption; an operator’s approved procedures may require a different dispatch calculation.
- Air-traffic routing: The filed path may be longer than the straight-line distance between two cities.
- Aircraft configuration: Interior layout, optional equipment and the exact generation can change useful load and seating.
A practical planning sequence
- Identify the exact model and generation, including whether the aircraft is an M2 Gen3, CJ3 Gen3, CJ4 Gen3 or CJ4 Gen2.
- Build the passenger and baggage load instead of starting with the maximum occupant number.
- Check the departure and destination runways, airport elevation, forecast temperature and expected winds.
- Calculate the filed route with the required IFR reserves and realistic alternates; do not substitute the brochure maximum for a dispatch calculation.
- Have the operator, flight department or qualified pilot confirm whether the planned payload and fuel are compatible with the aircraft’s approved performance data.
The result is a mission-specific range and payload decision. It may require a fuel stop, fewer passengers or a different airport even when the published city-pair distance appears to fit inside the headline number.
How many people can a Citation carry?
M2 Gen3: seven occupants
Textron lists a maximum of seven occupants for the Citation M2 Gen3. That number is a certified maximum for the specified configuration, not a promise that seven adults plus full baggage will be comfortable on every trip. Confirm the installed interior, baggage arrangement and weight-and-balance data for the individual aircraft.
CJ3 Gen3: nine occupants
The CJ3 Gen3 is listed at up to nine occupants. A nine-person load can materially change fuel and runway calculations, so the practical passenger count depends on the route, weather, baggage and reserve requirement.

CJ4 Gen2: up to eleven occupants
A CJ4 Gen2 product card reports seating configurations accommodating up to 11 occupants, while the current CJ4 Gen3 listing shows 10. The difference is a variant or configuration issue, not an error to be averaged. Never advertise a generic “CJ4 seat count” without identifying Gen2 or Gen3 and the actual interior.
Occupants are not the same as useful passenger capacity
Seat count does not describe cabin comfort, baggage volume or the number of people an aircraft can carry on a long stage with full fuel. For a purchase or charter quote, ask for the specific interior layout, maximum zero-fuel and takeoff weights, baggage limitations and a sample weight-and-balance calculation for your normal mission.
Can an owner fly a Citation privately?
Single-pilot certification versus pilot qualification
When Textron calls a model “single-pilot certified,” it means the aircraft is approved for operation by one pilot under its certification basis. It does not grant the owner a license, a type rating or permission to bypass training. The person acting as pilot in command still needs the certificate, ratings, endorsements, medical qualification, recent experience and operating privileges required for that flight.

FAA regulation 14 CFR §61.31 requires a person acting as pilot in command of a turbojet-powered airplane to hold the appropriate type rating. The rule also contains training and endorsement provisions. A private-pilot certificate by itself is therefore not enough to serve as PIC of a Citation.

Baseline certificate and additional preparation
The FAA states that an application for a U.S. private-pilot certificate requires at least 40 hours of flight time, including specified instructor and solo components. That is a baseline for the certificate, not a Citation qualification. Jet transition training, instrument privileges, aircraft-specific systems training, simulator work, check rides, medical eligibility and currency must be evaluated for the intended operation.
A sensible qualification path
- Hold the appropriate FAA pilot certificate and medical qualification for the operation you intend to conduct.
- Obtain the ratings and endorsements required for the aircraft and the type of flight, including the Citation type rating required by 14 CFR §61.31.
- Complete aircraft-specific initial training and any required practical test or proficiency check with an appropriately authorized provider.
- Learn the aircraft’s operating limitations, performance planning, emergency procedures, avionics and approved single-pilot procedures.
- Maintain the required recent experience, recurrent training and medical status before acting as PIC.
A professional training provider or aviation attorney can map the exact requirements to the owner’s certificate, ratings, insurance conditions and operating rules. Insurance may impose standards that are more demanding than the regulatory minimum.
Private use and compensated charter are different
What private operation allows
An owner can use a Citation for personal, family or business travel when the flight is conducted under the applicable private-operating rules and the pilot is properly qualified. Sharing a ride with family or friends is not the same as selling transportation to the public.
Why carrying paying passengers changes the legal framework
FAA Safe Charter Operations guidance explains: “Air charter operations require a higher level of FAA pilot training and certification than pilots who may take family or friends for an airplane ride.” The same guidance states that air transportation requires a commercial or airline-transport pilot license and applicable operating rules, such as Part 135, and that private pilots may not act as pilot in command for compensation or hire.

Can a privately owned Citation be chartered?
Ownership and charter authority are separate. A privately owned aircraft may be placed with an appropriately certificated commercial operator, but the operator must have the required FAA authority, procedures, crew qualifications, maintenance controls and insurance. The owner should verify the operator’s certificate and operating authority rather than accepting a marketing claim. An owner-pilot cannot simply collect payment from passengers and treat the flight as a private trip.

There is no universal current purchase price or hourly operating-cost figure that applies to every Citation. The model, age, equipment, maintenance status, utilization, financing, crew arrangement and mission determine the budget. A credible ownership plan separates one-time, fixed and variable costs.
| Ownership area | What to budget for | Why the amount varies |
|---|---|---|
| Acquisition and financing | Purchase price, transaction costs, financing structure, pre-buy inspection and records review | Model, year, avionics, total time, maintenance status and market conditions |
| Pilot and crew | Initial and recurrent training, simulator sessions, salaries or contract crew, travel and benefits | Owner-pilot versus two-pilot operation, utilization and insurance requirements |
| Hangar and airport services | Hangar or tie-down, parking, handling, deicing and ground support | Airport, climate, aircraft size and local availability |
| Insurance | Hull and liability coverage, deductibles and named-pilot requirements | Pilot experience, aircraft value, use, geography and insurer underwriting |
| Maintenance | Scheduled inspections, unscheduled repairs, parts, engines, avionics and maintenance programs | Aircraft age, utilization, component cycles and program enrollment |
| Operations | Fuel, navigation or handling fees, catering, crew expenses and trip support | Fuel price, stage length, airports, passenger load and annual hours |
| Lifecycle and resale | Interior refurbishment, avionics updates, records management and eventual sale costs | Market demand, specification, maintenance history and timing |
Textron support resources
Textron Aviation presents its service network, maintenance programs, modifications and OEM support as resources for Citation owners. When comparing aircraft, ask which service locations can support the specific model, what maintenance program is transferable, how modifications affect downtime and whether parts or technical support are available where the aircraft will be based.

Choosing among the current models
Use the published numbers as a first screen, then test each aircraft against the mission rather than selecting solely by range.
| Mission question | M2 Gen3 | CJ3 Gen3 | CJ4 Gen3 or CJ4 Gen2 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Published range reference | 1,550 nm | 2,040 nm | 2,165 nm |
| Published occupant figure | 7 | 9 | Gen3: 10; Gen2 product card: up to 11 |
| Single-pilot question | Textron describes it as suited to single-pilot operation | Confirm the exact aircraft certification and operating limitations | Textron lists CJ4 Gen3 as single-pilot certified; verify the variant |
| Key evaluation | Payload and runway performance on shorter missions | Passenger load, baggage and reserve margin for the planned stage | Variant seating, payload, runway requirements and ownership cost |
Also compare airport access, runway performance, cabin height and comfort, maintenance support, avionics configuration and total ownership economics. A longer published range is useful only if the aircraft can carry your normal payload from the airports you actually use.
Before buying: a due-diligence checklist
- Define the mission: List annual flight hours, common city pairs, passengers, baggage, alternate airports and seasonal weather.
- Specify the aircraft: Record the exact model, generation, serial number, interior, avionics, engine status and maintenance-program enrollment.
- Verify performance: Obtain a mission analysis using approved data, realistic payloads, winds, runway limits and required reserves.
- Review records: Have qualified technical personnel examine logbooks, inspection status, component times, damage history and airworthiness directives.
- Plan pilot coverage: Decide whether the aircraft will be owner-flown, crewed or both, then match training and insurance requirements to that decision.
- Secure infrastructure: Confirm hangar availability, maintenance access, fuel service, deicing and dispatch support at the intended base.
- Model the full budget: Include fixed costs, variable costs, reserves, downtime, financing and resale—not only fuel or an advertised hourly figure.
- Separate private and charter plans: If revenue flights are contemplated, select an operator with the required FAA authority before advertising or accepting payment.
That process turns a brochure comparison into an operating decision tied to a specific aircraft, pilot and mission.
