Start by searching Messages and checking Recently Deleted; do not erase the iPhone or restore an older backup until you have checked those options and protected your current data.
First, work out what disappeared
The right fix depends on whether an entire conversation is missing, only certain message bubbles or attachments are gone, incoming messages are not appearing, or the problem affects just one device. A notification disappearing does not necessarily mean the message itself was deleted.
- Search Messages. Search for the contact name, phone number, a distinctive word from the message, or the subject of an attachment. If the conversation appears, open it and check whether the missing item is still there.
- Inspect the conversation list and filters. Messages may be separated from the main list rather than deleted. Menu names and filtering behavior vary by iOS version.
- Check Recently Deleted. This is the quickest recovery option if you or someone using the phone deleted a conversation.
Until you know which case applies, avoid deleting messages on another Apple device signed in to the same account: with Messages in iCloud enabled, changes can sync across devices.
Recover a deleted conversation from Recently Deleted
On current iPhone software, open Messages, go to the conversation list, tap Filters (or Edit on some versions), then choose Recently Deleted or Show Recently Deleted. Select the conversation or messages, tap Recover, and confirm the recovery. Apple’s current iPhone guide says deleted messages can be recovered for up to 30 days; its general support guidance describes a 30-to-40-day window depending on circumstances and software. If Recently Deleted is empty, the messages may be outside the recovery period, permanently deleted, never synced to this device, or absent because of an account or backup issue. Permanently deleting items from Recently Deleted cannot be undone. Apple also says messages deleted before upgrading to iOS 16 or later cannot be recovered with the newer Recently Deleted feature. Check whether iPhone retention settings removed older messages
Go to Settings → Apps → Messages → Keep Messages. Available choices are 30 Days, 1 Year, and Forever. If 30 Days or 1 Year is selected, older conversations and attachments are automatically removed. This is a likely explanation when old messages disappear over time rather than all at once.
Choose Forever if you do not want future messages removed by this retention rule. Changing the setting does not necessarily bring back messages already deleted. Apple’s iPhone guide

If messages vanished after a restore or phone switch
Messages may not appear immediately after restoring or setting up an iPhone. If Messages in iCloud is enabled, messages and voice recordings are stored in iCloud separately from the iCloud backup and can download after the restore. Apple advises keeping the device connected to Wi-Fi while this completes. Apple’s restore guidance
- Connect the iPhone to Wi-Fi and power, then allow time for synchronization.
- Check that it is signed in to the Apple Account used on the previous device.
- Look on another iPhone, iPad, or Mac using that account for the conversation.
- Consider whether the new phone was restored from the correct device’s backup. Apple warns that restoring a device from a different device type’s backup—for example, an iPhone from an iPad backup—can leave Messages and Voice Memos missing.
If Messages in iCloud was off, messages and attachments may instead be part of the next iCloud Backup. Check whether the restore has completed and whether another iCloud or computer backup is available. Before trying an older backup, make a current backup: restoring an older one can replace newer information. Apple’s restore guidance
If only some messages or one person’s conversation is missing
Look in filters and check contact details
Inspect the Messages list, available filters, and unknown-sender categories. In iOS 26, Apple documents categorization for notifications from unknown senders; their presentation can vary, so do not assume every missing message has been moved to spam. If only one person’s messages are affected, check whether the conversation uses a different phone number or email address and whether that number or address is blocked. Separate missing attachments from missing text
If the conversation remains but a photo or other attachment is missing, check whether it was removed by the Keep Messages retention setting. Audio messages have a separate expiration behavior: an unsaved audio message that expires cannot be recovered, according to Apple. Apple’s Messages guide
Check one-time verification codes
If only used authentication codes disappear, check the automatic deletion setting for one-time verification codes. It is separate from the general Keep Messages retention period and does not explain an entire conversation vanishing. Apple’s iPhone guide

Understand what Messages in iCloud does
Messages in iCloud is synchronization, not a separate time-machine archive. Messages and conversations sync across Apple devices using the same Apple Account. Deleting a message on one synchronized device deletes it on the others; recovering it on one can recover it on other devices where Messages in iCloud is enabled. That deletion does not remove the message from the recipient’s phone. Apple’s iPhone guide and Messages guide

For the same reason, having iCloud does not guarantee that an earlier copy of a deleted message is waiting there. Check other devices, but do not make changes on them until you understand whether synchronization is active.

If the messages are not in Recently Deleted and Messages in iCloud was not enabled, an iCloud or computer backup made before the messages disappeared may contain them. First identify the backup date and confirm that it belongs to the correct device. Preserve the iPhone’s current data before restoring: an older backup can replace newer content, and recovery depends on what the backup actually contains. Apple recommends backing up current data before trying a different backup. Apple’s restore guidance
When Messages in iCloud is enabled, messages download separately after a restore rather than being included in the ordinary iCloud Backup in the same way. An older backup therefore may not be the right recovery route.

Cases where normal recovery is unlikely
- The message was permanently deleted from Recently Deleted.
- The recovery period has passed or the item was deleted before the iOS 16-era recovery feature.
- The sender used Undo Send on an iMessage. Apple says this removes the message from the sender’s conversation and the recipient’s Apple-device conversation; messages removed this way are permanently deleted and cannot be recovered through Recently Deleted. Availability and behavior depend on software versions and message type, and ordinary SMS does not have the same full iMessage feature set. Apple’s iPhone guide
- An audio message expired before it was saved. Apple’s Messages guide
- The available backup does not contain the messages.
Do not rely on third-party recovery software to bypass permanent deletion or recover data that is not present in an available backup. Apple’s documented recovery options do not establish that such software can do so.
Prevent another disappearance
- Set Keep Messages to Forever if you want to retain older conversations on the device.
- Keep devices signed in to the intended Apple Account and allow Messages in iCloud time to sync after setup or restore.
- Maintain a current iCloud or computer backup, and preserve current data before restoring an older backup.
- Save audio messages you need to keep before they expire.
- Before deleting a conversation on one device, remember that Messages in iCloud may carry the deletion to other synced devices.
For account or synchronization problems, Apple Support can help troubleshoot the device or account. Support is not a guarantee that permanently deleted messages can be recovered.
