Texas Tech confirmed on October 2, 2026, that quarterback Thomas Castellanos would not be eligible to play at Colorado on October 3. Why was Thomas Castellanos ruled ineligible again?
The immediate reason was the appeals court’s dissolution of the temporary injunction. That injunction had been the legal basis allowing Castellanos to play while the lawsuit continued. Once it was dissolved, Texas Tech confirmed he could not play against Colorado. FOX 34 Lubbock reported the team’s confirmation, and Yahoo Sports covered the appellate action.
“Again” describes a change in his immediate playing status, not a second final judgment resolving whether he is entitled to another season. The appellate ruling ended the temporary protection; the underlying eligibility dispute was still pending as of October 3. The available reporting does not establish the panel’s detailed legal reasoning, so no specific rationale should be attributed to the court.
Does the ruling end Castellanos’s eligibility lawsuit?
No. Dissolving an injunction changes the temporary arrangement while a case is pending; it is not, by itself, a decision on the merits of the claims. As of October 3, the case remained active. On3’s Red Raider Sports reported that Jefferson Circuit Court had scheduled a hearing in Wells, Levavium II et al. v. Castellanos’s attorney, Ryan Downton, argued that the NCAA should certify him under its rules: “As long as he did not have any professionalism issues, they should certify him as eligible under the NCAA Manual as it exists today. And play him.” That is the attorney’s position, not a court finding or an independent confirmation from the NCAA. USA TODAY reproduced the statement.
Could Castellanos play later in the 2026 season?
The October 2 announcement established that he was unavailable for Texas Tech’s October 3 game at Colorado. It did not establish his status for every later game: the litigation was continuing, and the reported October 9 hearing had not yet taken place as of October 3. A later change would depend on subsequent legal action and the team’s eligibility status for the relevant game.

What was Castellanos’s role at Texas Tech before the ruling?
Texas Tech announced his arrival on August 29, 2026, after he had played for UCF in 2022, Boston College in 2023 and 2024, and Florida State in 2025. The team said he would compete for the backup quarterback position behind Will Hammond. The roster listed him as a fifth-year player with one season of eligibility remaining; those were the program’s pre-ruling plans and roster listing, not a current eligibility decision. The roster gives his career totals across his previous college stops as 6,449 passing yards, 48 passing touchdowns, 1,984 rushing yards, and 24 rushing touchdowns. These are not Texas Tech-only statistics. Separately, FOX 34 reported that he made his Red Raider debut on September 12 and had four total touchdowns in three appearances through its October 2 report—a dated in-season snapshot.

What to watch for in the next update
- Whether the October 9 hearing took place and what the court decided; the date and time were reported by On3, but no result was available as of October 3.
- Whether any later court action changes the temporary legal position supporting Castellanos’s participation.
- Texas Tech’s announcement of his availability for a particular game. A ruling about temporary protection and a team’s game-by-game eligibility confirmation are distinct questions.
The Kentucky case and injunction concern the plaintiffs covered by that order. They do not, on the information available here, establish the status of athletes in other states or separate lawsuits.
