Republican-aligned groups have helped drive an extraordinary ad-buying surge in the 2026 Texas Senate race. The Texas Tribune reported on October 1 that nearly $259 million had gone to general-election advertising through the end of September; across the primary and general-election stages, its reported total was $432 million. More than 98% of the general-election ad spending it counted supported Republican nominee Ken Paxton, either with positive ads or attacks on Democrat James Talarico.
How much has been spent on Texas Senate race ads?
The Texas Tribune’s October 1, 2026 report put general-election ad spending at nearly $259 million through September 30. That figure is for advertising during the general-election period, not every expense in the campaigns. The same report counted $432 million across the primary and general election combined. Those totals answer different questions and should not be substituted for one another. The Texas Tribune’s October 1 report attributes the ad estimates to AdImpact.
For a recent benchmark, the Tribune compared the 2026 general-election ad estimate with $202 million spent on advertising in the 2024 Texas Senate contest between Ted Cruz and Collin Allred. The 2026 figure had already surpassed that comparison by the end of September, although the two figures are estimates for election advertising rather than a complete accounting of all campaign costs.
Who is the advertising helping?
More than 98% of the 2026 general-election ad spending counted by the Tribune supported Paxton, through favorable messages about him and negative ads targeting Talarico. The report said most of the advertising appeared on broadcast television and streaming services. Talarico had dominated the airwaves earlier in the general-election period, before Republican spending intensified. The Tribune’s account also reported that Talarico had spent $61 million on ads since the general election began, citing AdImpact; that is an ad-spending estimate, not his campaign’s total fundraising.

What changed in September?
On September 22, The Texas Tribune reported that the Senate Leadership Fund had increased its Texas ad commitment to $100 million, with another $30 million in ads to be booked through connected Texas PAC. The article put Republican general-election spending above $140 million at that point. The $100 million was a reported commitment, not an assertion that the full amount had already been spent. The same report said the Senate Leadership Fund had already spent nearly $70 million on advertising. The September 22 Tribune report also estimated nearly $66 million in Texas PAC spending for September, against about $22 million for Talarico, and approximately $103 million in total Republican-group spending for that month.
Other outlets reported later or differently scoped figures. The Associated Press said the Senate Leadership Fund had put more than $100 million into Texas advertising that month and that MAGA Inc. had committed more than $20 million in ads supporting Paxton. Axios reported that Texas PAC filed a report showing more than $61.4 million in spending over two days, bringing its reported spending for Paxton to more than $131 million over 17 days. That Axios total included advertising and other activities, not ads alone. The Associated Press report and Axios report should be read according to their own dates and definitions; commitments, ad-tracker estimates and reported expenditures are not interchangeable amounts to add together.

Ad spending is not the same as campaign fundraising
In a July 20 report, the Tribune said the candidates’ latest quarterly filings showed James Talarico had raised $31.6 million and Ken Paxton $9.3 million. Those figures are campaign receipts for the period covered by their filings, not outside-group ad spending and not October fundraising totals. The candidate campaigns, outside groups’ spending and ad commitments are separate measures. The July 20 Tribune report provides the dated fundraising comparison.
How to check official campaign-finance records
The Federal Election Commission’s pages identify Paxton’s candidacy and principal campaign committee, Ken Paxton for Senate. The FEC cautions that the election page may not yet include the latest submitted filings, so a live total can lag. For an up-to-date audit, use the underlying filings and note each report’s coverage period and filing date rather than treating a displayed election total as final. The FEC’s Texas 2026 Senate election page is a starting point for the federal records.

Why the Texas race draws national attention
The Tribune noted that Democrats last won a Texas U.S. Senate race in 1988. That is distinct from the statewide-election record: Republicans last lost a Texas statewide race in 1994, according to the same report. The long Republican record helps explain the national focus, but the two historical milestones describe different kinds of contests. The spending totals show the scale of the current advertising fight; they do not, by themselves, establish the eventual result.
