Short answer: Magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) and rhombohedral tetralayer graphene both produce narrow, interaction-dominated electronic bands, but they do so in different ways. TBG relies on rotating two graphene sheets by about 1.1 degrees to make a moiré lattice. Tetralayer graphene relies on the stacking order of four sheets, with additional control from an electric displacement field and interlayer sliding.

TBG currently has the more extensive record of superconductivity, correlated insulating states and orbital magnetism. Tetralayer graphene is not simply a four-layer replacement for magic-angle TBG: it offers a different set of knobs and has produced isospin-polarized metals, orbital multiferroicity and integer and fractional quantum anomalous Hall phenomena in multilayer rhombohedral structures. Neither is a commercial technology, a room-temperature magnet or a ready-made quantum-computing component. The useful choice depends on whether an experiment needs moiré-angle control or stacking-and-sliding control.

What the two platforms are

Magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene

TBG is made by placing two atomically thin graphene sheets on top of one another with a small relative rotation. Near the so-called magic angle of approximately 1.1 degrees, the rotation creates a long-wavelength moiré superlattice. The moiré pattern changes the electronic dispersion and can produce very narrow, or “flat,” bands. A review by G. Feraco and coauthors in Europhysics Letters (2025) describes these ultra-flat moiré bands as the source of highly tunable unconventional quantum phenomena.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The moiré period depends strongly on angle. The Innovation Materials editorial (2024) gives approximately 10 nanometres as a typical moiré wavelength for small-angle devices. That length is many times larger than graphene’s atomic lattice spacing, so electrons experience an emergent superlattice rather than only the underlying carbon lattice.

Rhombohedral tetralayer graphene

Tetralayer graphene contains four graphene sheets in a rhombohedral stacking sequence. Its low-energy bands are generated by the stacking geometry and interlayer coupling rather than by rotating two layers. In rhombohedral multilayers, the bands become flatter as the layer number increases; a four-layer stack therefore extends the flat-band and topology mechanisms found in fewer-layer rhombohedral devices.

There is no single “tetralayer graphene” phase diagram independent of stacking quality, carrier density, displacement field, magnetic field and electrostatic environment. Two devices with the same nominal layer count can differ if the stacking sequence, interfaces or disorder differ. That dependence is a central contrast with TBG, where the twist angle and its spatial uniformity are the defining fabrication targets.

How flat bands arise: moiré twist versus stacking

Feature Magic-angle TBG Rhombohedral tetralayer graphene
Number of graphene layers Two Four
Primary band-flattening mechanism A relative rotation near approximately 1.1 degrees creates a moiré superlattice and ultra-flat bands. Rhombohedral stacking creates topological low-energy bands that flatten as layer number increases.
Characteristic geometric scale Approximately 10 nm moiré wavelength is typical for small-angle devices, according to The Innovation Materials (2024). No single moiré wavelength is defined; the relevant geometry is the four-layer stacking arrangement.
Main fabrication sensitivity Twist-angle accuracy and spatial homogeneity over the active area. Correct stacking sequence, layer number, interface quality and the ability to control relative layer sliding.
Electrostatic control Carrier-density gates and displacement field reshape the moiré bands. Carrier-density gates and displacement field reshape the multilayer bands.
Mechanical control Pressure and strain can alter the moiré band structure and phase diagram. Interlayer sliding is an explicit magnetic control variable; strain and pressure can also modify the bands.

These mechanisms can produce similar experimental symptoms—large resistance changes, insulating states or magnetism—but they should not be treated as interchangeable explanations. A magnetic transition tuned by twist-angle-dependent moiré filling is a different control problem from one tuned by sliding a rhombohedral layer relative to its neighbours.

What magnetism and correlated phases have been observed?

Magnetism and correlations in TBG

When a TBG flat band is partially filled, the kinetic energy scale is reduced and electron–electron interactions become comparatively important. The TBG literature since 2018 has reported superconductivity, correlated Mott-like insulating states, orbital ferromagnetism and quantum anomalous Hall effects. The exact phase depends on filling, displacement field, magnetic field, temperature, sample alignment and disorder.

“Orbital” magnetism does not mean that the device is a permanent bar magnet. It refers to circulating electronic currents or valley-associated orbital moments in a correlated state. The magnetic response can be switched or reshaped by electrostatic filling and external fields, and it is generally measured in cryogenic, micron-scale devices.

Feraco et al. (2025) cite a superlattice band gap of about 40 meV and an activation energy of approximately 0.32 meV for a particular half-filled insulating state. Those values belong to the cited state and measurement context; they are not universal constants for every TBG device or a specification for a product.

Magnetism and topology in tetralayer and related rhombohedral graphene

Multilayer rhombohedral graphene, including tetralayer structures, has shown a different collection of interaction-driven phases. Reported examples include isospin-polarized metals, orbital multiferroicity, and integer and fractional quantum anomalous Hall effects. “Isospin” here groups internal quantum labels such as spin and valley; polarization of those labels can produce magnetic or transport signatures without making the material a room-temperature ferromagnet.

Orbital multiferroicity is especially significant conceptually because magnetic and electric order parameters can be coupled. In a tetralayer device, an electric displacement field can change layer polarization and the balance between competing states, while stacking and sliding alter the underlying wave functions. The resulting control space is broader than simply changing carrier density, but it is also more sensitive to device construction and hysteresis.

Which platform has more controllable magnetism?

There is no standardized head-to-head metric that makes one platform universally superior. The answer depends on what “control” means:

  • Fast, familiar electrostatic tuning: TBG has a well-developed gate-and-filling workflow, with displacement field, magnetic field, pressure and strain available as additional knobs.
  • Structural control of magnetic order: Tetralayer graphene adds stacking sequence, layer number and interlayer sliding. A 2026 Nature Nanotechnology paper titled “Interlayer sliding controls magnetism in tetralayer graphene” identifies sliding as a direct magnetic-control mechanism.
  • Phase-diagram maturity: TBG has the longer and more widely recognized record of superconducting, correlated-insulating and orbital-magnetic observations.
  • Topological and multiferroic design: Rhombohedral multilayers provide particularly rich routes to orbital multiferroicity and integer or fractional quantum anomalous Hall states.

Thus, TBG is usually the more established platform for studying how moiré filling produces correlated magnetism and superconductivity. Tetralayer graphene is attractive when the experiment specifically needs layer-polarization, stacking or sliding as a control coordinate.

Control knobs in practice

Control knob Effect in TBG Effect in tetralayer graphene Practical caveat
Twist angle Sets the moiré wavelength and whether bands approach the magic-angle flat-band regime. Not the defining variable for a conventional rhombohedral tetralayer stack. Small angle errors or spatial variation can broaden bands and make devices nonuniform.
Carrier-density gates Move the chemical potential through moiré minibands and correlated fillings. Move the chemical potential through multilayer bands and interaction-driven gaps. Gate calibration and contact resistance affect the inferred filling.
Displacement field Breaks layer symmetry and reshapes the moiré band topology and phase boundaries. Changes layer polarization, band gaps and competition among magnetic, metallic and topological states. Top and bottom gate fields must be interpreted together with dielectric thickness and trapped charge.
Magnetic field Probes orbital and spin responses and can stabilize or split phases. Probes orbital and spin responses and can alter quantum Hall and anomalous Hall states. A field-dependent resistance change alone does not identify the microscopic order.
Pressure and strain Modify interlayer spacing, hopping and moiré-band bandwidth. Modify interlayer coupling and the balance of multilayer phases. Nonuniform strain can create spatially varying electronic phases.
Interlayer sliding Not the standard primary tuning variable; uncontrolled relaxation can still affect local structure. Can deliberately change registry between layers and control magnetism, as highlighted by the 2026 tetralayer study. Sliding requires mechanical precision and may introduce domains, friction or hysteresis.

In both systems, the knobs are coupled. Changing displacement field can alter the effective filling at which a transition appears; strain can change the bandwidth that determines whether interactions dominate; and contact geometry can make a nominally identical gate sweep look different from device to device. A useful experiment records gate voltages, calibrated densities, displacement field, temperature, magnetic field and the device’s stacking or twist characterization together.

Fabrication tolerance and reproducibility

What makes TBG difficult

The defining challenge is angular precision. The two graphene sheets must be assembled near 1.1 degrees, and the angle must remain sufficiently uniform across the active region. Tiny variations create regions with different moiré wavelengths and local fillings. Relaxation, bubbles, wrinkles and contamination can further disturb the intended superlattice.

Even a device that shows a correlated resistance peak is not automatically equivalent to another TBG device. Encapsulation, dielectric environment, contact placement, disorder and thermal cycling can shift transition temperatures and gap sizes. Comparing papers therefore requires checking the same filling, displacement-field convention, temperature range and measurement geometry.

What makes tetralayer graphene difficult

Tetralayer fabrication avoids the need to set a magic twist angle, but it demands reliable identification of four layers and the intended rhombohedral stacking sequence. A stacking fault or local change in registry can alter the low-energy bands. Because interlayer sliding is itself a control variable, the device must also distinguish intentional motion from uncontrolled relaxation or domain formation.

Layer number, stacking and electrostatic asymmetry should be verified independently rather than inferred from one transport trace. Optical contrast, spectroscopy, scanning probes or other structural checks may be needed, depending on the experiment. The measurement burden is higher when the claim concerns a narrow magnetic phase or a fractional Hall state, because small inhomogeneities can mimic or obscure a transition.

How to compare results fairly

  • Match temperature and magnetic-field ranges before comparing transition strengths.
  • Report whether the sample is encapsulated and the dielectric materials used.
  • State the carrier-density calibration, displacement-field definition and contact geometry.
  • Separate a local spectroscopic gap from a transport activation energy; they are not interchangeable.
  • Identify whether a phase is observed in one device, reproduced across devices or established across multiple laboratories.
  • Distinguish an orbital-magnetism signature from conventional spin ferromagnetism and from a Hall response caused by an external magnetic field.

Applications: what is realistic now?

Current role: controlled quantum-material platforms

The strongest defensible application for both materials is as a research platform. Laboratories use them to study interaction-driven phases, topology, quantum simulation concepts, and the coupling between charge, spin, valley and orbital degrees of freedom. Their small devices and cryogenic operating conditions are valuable for discovering mechanisms, not evidence of a finished commercial component.

Application area What the materials can contribute today Status and limitation
Quantum simulation Programmable fillings, fields and layer asymmetries emulate strongly correlated lattice models. Primarily laboratory experiments in small, low-temperature devices.
Topological electronics Quantum anomalous Hall and related states provide unusual edge-transport regimes. Requires stringent device quality, low temperature and reproducible phase control.
Low-power or orbital electronics Orbital and valley polarization could encode information with less reliance on conventional charge currents. Readout, switching energy, retention and room-temperature operation remain unestablished.
Spin and valley functionality Internal quantum labels can be polarized or coupled to electric fields and layer asymmetry. Device architectures and robust operating windows are still under development.
Quantum metrology Sharp correlated and topological responses can serve as sensitive probes of fields or material parameters. Calibration, stability and scalable integration have not been demonstrated as products.

Broader graphene-family possibilities

The Innovation Materials editorial (2024) lists flexible electronics, high-frequency transistors, transparent conductive coatings, advanced composites, energy storage and sensors as broader graphene application areas. Those are graphene-family possibilities, not demonstrations that tetralayer graphene or TBG has replaced existing products in those categories. The electronic requirements for a transparent coating, for example, differ completely from the cryogenic, gate-defined conditions used to observe a correlated flat-band phase.

Why commercialization is not immediate

Scalable production, cost, precise rotational alignment, spatial homogeneity and integration remain unresolved barriers. TBG must maintain a controlled angle and clean interfaces; tetralayer devices must maintain a controlled stacking sequence and, in some experiments, a reliable way to slide layers without damaging them. Both platforms also need reproducible contacts, dielectric stacks and packaging.

Claims about practical applications should therefore specify the level of maturity: a demonstrated physical effect, a repeatable device experiment, a prototype subsystem or a qualified product. The cited literature supports the first two categories for selected phenomena, not a claim that either material is a commercial magnet, transistor platform or quantum-computing module.

Is tetralayer graphene a better alternative to magic-angle TBG?

Use the following decision rule rather than asking which material is better in the abstract.

If the priority is… More natural starting point Reason
Studying the canonical magic-angle flat-band phase diagram TBG The 1.1-degree moiré platform has the most established body of work on correlated insulators, superconductivity and orbital magnetism.
Changing bands through a geometric twist parameter TBG Twist angle directly defines the moiré superlattice, although achieving uniformity is difficult.
Engineering layer polarization with an electric displacement field Either, with different band structures Both respond to displacement field; tetralayer graphene offers the multilayer rhombohedral topology.
Testing magnetic control by registry changes Tetralayer graphene Interlayer sliding is a specifically identified magnetic-control mechanism.
Exploring multiferroic or fractional quantum anomalous Hall behavior Rhombohedral multilayer graphene, including tetralayers Those phenomena are part of the reported multilayer phase space, subject to demanding measurement conditions.
Building a scalable commercial component now Neither Manufacturing, homogeneity, integration and operating-temperature barriers remain unresolved.

A tetralayer experiment can complement TBG rather than replace it. Comparing the two under matched cryogenic transport protocols may reveal whether a transition is tied to moiré geometry, rhombohedral topology, displacement-field-induced layer polarization or a more general interaction mechanism.

A practical checklist for evaluating a claim

  1. Identify the structure. Confirm whether the sample is a 1.1-degree two-layer moiré device or a four-layer rhombohedral stack, and record how that structure was verified.
  2. Map the controls. Report density, displacement field, temperature, magnetic field, strain or pressure, and any interlayer-sliding coordinate.
  3. Define the magnetic observable. State whether the evidence is magnetization, anomalous Hall conductance, hysteresis, orbital response, spectroscopy or another probe.
  4. Check the energy scale. Keep a quoted band gap or activation energy tied to the specific filling and measurement; do not generalize the approximately 40 meV and 0.32 meV values beyond the cited TBG state.
  5. Test reproducibility. Compare multiple cooldowns, devices and contact configurations where possible.
  6. Separate discovery from application. A striking low-temperature phase can be scientifically important without meeting the requirements for a manufacturable room-temperature device.

What remains unresolved

Several questions keep the comparison open. In TBG, researchers continue to disentangle which correlated phases are intrinsic, how disorder and relaxation modify them, and which microscopic mechanisms connect superconductivity, insulating states and orbital magnetism. In tetralayer graphene, the relationship between stacking, sliding, displacement field and multiferroic or anomalous-Hall order needs systematic mapping across devices.

Neither platform yet has a universally accepted benchmark that combines magnetic moment, switching energy, operating temperature, endurance and fabrication yield. Without that common metric, statements such as “more magnetic” or “more controllable” are incomplete. The meaningful comparison is always tied to a specified phase, control protocol, temperature and measurement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bottom line

TBG is the better-known route to interaction-driven physics from a precisely tuned moiré angle, with the strongest established record of superconductivity, correlated insulating states and orbital magnetism. Rhombohedral tetralayer graphene is a distinct platform in which stacking, layer number, displacement field and interlayer sliding can reshape topological and magnetic phases, including multiferroic and quantum anomalous Hall behavior. Neither is a drop-in commercial alternative to the other. Choose TBG for moiré-band studies and its mature phase diagram; choose tetralayer graphene when multilayer topology and structural control are the scientific objective.
