Choose TestNG when its suite XML, groups, method dependencies, data providers, or fine-grained parallel execution solve a specific need. Neither framework is a universal winner: compare the execution model, Java baseline, build and IDE integration, reporting, and migration effort against your project.
What is the current JUnit version, and what does JUnit 6 include?
The JUnit project overview identifies JUnit 6.1.3, released August 7, 2026. JUnit 6 requires Java 17 or newer at runtime. It is a set of related components rather than just a renamed JUnit 4 API: the Platform provides the infrastructure for launching test engines, Jupiter provides the programming and extension model for new tests, and Vintage runs JUnit 3 and JUnit 4 tests on the Platform during migration. JUnit project overview and release notes.
TestNG’s documentation gives version-specific setup examples for TestNG 7.9.0 with JDK 11 and TestNG 7.5.1 with JDK 8; those examples do not establish the latest TestNG release or the full compatibility range. Check the current TestNG release and JDK compatibility for the project before selecting a dependency. TestNG documentation.
How do TestNG and JUnit differ in everyday use?
| Decision area | TestNG | JUnit 6 | What to assess |
|---|---|---|---|
| Test organization | Uses testng.xml to configure suites and tests, groups, included or excluded methods, and explicit order controls. TestNG documentation |
Runs tests through the JUnit Platform and its engines; JUnit 6 provides Jupiter and Vintage. JUnit project overview | Which model maps cleanly to the way your team separates and selects unit, integration, and other tests? |
| Data-driven tests | @DataProvider supplies argument sets to test methods and can run generated tests in parallel. TestNG documentation |
Provides parameterized tests. Confirm exact APIs and dependency setup in the current JUnit 6 guide; the JUnit 5.12 guide is historical context, not the current JUnit 6 authority. JUnit 5.12 guide | Consider input sources, how cases appear in reports, and whether cases need parallel execution. |
| Dependencies and ordering | Documents method and group dependencies, suite ordering, and explicit execution controls. TestNG documentation | Do not assume its execution-order or dependency behavior is identical to TestNG; check the chosen engine’s documentation and avoid relying on incidental order. | Use dependencies only when a workflow requires them. Tests that depend on other tests can be harder to understand and maintain. |
| Parallel execution | Documents parallel modes for methods, tests, classes, instances, and data providers, with thread-count configuration. TestNG documentation | JUnit 6.1.0 release notes mention a new parallel test executor implementation. Vintage has separate opt-in class and method parallel settings for legacy tests. JUnit release notes and JUnit user guide | Match the required level of parallelism to the configuration available, and make sure shared test state is safe to use concurrently. |
| JUnit 3 and 4 migration | Documents running JUnit 3 and JUnit 4 tests through its JUnit integration. TestNG documentation | Vintage can run JUnit 3 and 4 tests on the JUnit Platform while migrating, but current JUnit documentation deprecates Vintage. JUnit user guide | For an existing JUnit project, plan a migration path instead of treating a compatibility layer as the permanent model for new tests. |
| Build integration | Documentation covers Gradle and Maven use. TestNG documentation | JUnit lists Gradle, Maven, Ant, Bazel, and sbt support. Gradle supports JUnit-based and TestNG execution. JUnit project overview and Gradle Test DSL | Verify the project’s actual build tool version, test provider, IDE discovery, CI reporting, and required plugins. Tool support alone may not settle the choice. |
Which framework fits your project?
Choose JUnit 6 for a new project when its baseline fits
- Use JUnit 6 if the project can run on Java 17 or newer and the team’s build and IDE workflow supports the JUnit Platform.
- Use Jupiter as the model for new tests. Keep the Platform and engine structure in view when checking test discovery and integration.
- Confirm the Java runtime used in local development, CI, and production-adjacent test environments; a framework that cannot run on the project’s actual baseline is not an option.
Evaluate TestNG when its controls meet a concrete need
- It is a strong candidate if the team relies on suite XML, group-based selection, method or group dependencies, or explicit suite ordering.
- Its data providers and documented parallel modes may fit a suite that needs those specific controls.
- Do not choose it on the assumption that parallel execution will automatically make tests faster. Measure the actual suite and account for contention and shared state.
Migrate an existing JUnit 4 suite deliberately
JUnit Vintage can keep JUnit 3 and 4 tests executable on the JUnit Platform as a temporary bridge. Plan to update tests and extensions toward Jupiter, and remove Vintage when the legacy tests have moved. Changes can include @Before and @After to @BeforeEach and @AfterEach, @Category to @Tag, and @RunWith to Jupiter extensions or other replacements. JUnit 4 rules also need an appropriate migration. - Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Let repository constraints break a close decision
Check the actual Gradle or Maven version, configured test provider, JDK used to run tests, IDE discovery, CI reporting, and required plugins. Gradle’s Test DSL states that it “Executes JUnit (3.8.x, 4.x or 5.x) or TestNG tests”; this documents Gradle support, not that these are the only frameworks supported by every toolchain. Gradle Test DSL.
How should you compare them before committing?
- Confirm runtime compatibility. Record the JDK used on developer machines and in CI. JUnit 6 requires Java 17 or newer at runtime; for TestNG, verify the release and JDK combination you intend to use.
- Write down the required test behaviors. List suite selection, groups or tags, parameter sources, ordering or dependencies, and parallel granularity the project actually needs.
- Check the working toolchain. Verify the framework’s test provider and engine configuration in the repository, then confirm test discovery and reporting in the IDE and CI system.
- Try the highest-risk cases. Run representative tests that exercise integration setup, parameterized cases, suite selection, and any required parallel behavior. Compare whether the resulting workflow is maintainable and reports failures clearly.
- Estimate migration and maintenance. For an existing suite, account for annotation, extension, rule, build, and CI changes. Avoid a migration whose only justification is an assumed speed or quality advantage.
Performance, reliability, and cost: what can you conclude?
The documented feature sets do not establish that either framework is faster, more reliable, more widely adopted, or better at producing software. No comparative benchmark or adoption statistic is established by the cited official documentation. Parallel execution is a capability, not a performance guarantee: results depend on the suite, test state, resources, and configuration. Benchmark the project’s own representative tests if runtime is a deciding factor. The cited material establishes build integrations but does not provide a basis for a comparative cost claim.
