Use TestFlight only when a developer has invited you to a beta. Install Apple’s free TestFlight app, accept the invitation by email or public link, and install the beta build there. If you want the finished public release, find the developer’s listing in the App Store and install that version instead.
The two versions are separate distribution routes. TestFlight builds are temporary and can be tested for up to 90 days, while an App Store release remains available according to the developer’s publication and maintenance decisions. App Store updates are automatic by default on iPhone and iPad, but you can also run them manually from your account menu.

The quick decision: TestFlight or the App Store?
Your starting point should be the kind of access you have:
- You received a beta invitation or TestFlight public link: install TestFlight and get the app from the invitation.
- You are looking for the finished, publicly released app: search for the developer’s App Store listing and install it there.
- You already have the public app installed: let the App Store update it automatically or update it manually from App Store > your account icon > App Updates.
A TestFlight invitation does not replace the App Store listing. It grants access to a particular beta distribution group, and the developer can stop offering that build or replace it with a newer one. Conversely, finding an app in the App Store does not mean you are enrolled in its TestFlight beta.

What TestFlight is—and what it is not
TestFlight is Apple’s distribution service for beta versions of apps. Apple describes it as a way to “distribute beta builds of your app, manage beta testers, and collect feedback.” A developer may use it before a public launch, alongside an existing release, or for a limited experiment. Participation is optional for developers; an app can go directly to the App Store without offering TestFlight access.
A beta is a working preview, not a promise that every feature is finished. It may contain bugs, incomplete content, changing designs, or features that are later removed. Your feedback is part of the reason the developer offered the build. Treat the beta as software for testing rather than as a permanent replacement for the released app.
Invitation methods
Developers can invite testers by entering an email address or by creating a public invitation link. An email invitation is associated with the address the developer selected. A public link can be shared more broadly, but the developer may restrict it by device or platform criteria and can set a tester limit. If the link reaches that limit or no longer meets the criteria, TestFlight may not let you join even when the URL itself still opens.

Internal and external tester groups
Apple’s current guidance allows up to 100 internal testers and up to 10,000 external testers per app. Internal testers are people the developer has added to the app’s development team in App Store Connect. External testers are outside that team and normally join through an invitation or public link. These limits are operational caps, not guarantees that any particular app has open places.
Review before external testing
When a developer submits the first build to an external tester group, Apple sends that build through TestFlight App Review. Apple states that later builds may not require a full review. This review is separate from the review that makes an app publicly available in the App Store, so an app can be in TestFlight without being released to everyone.

How do I install a TestFlight app?
Use these steps when a developer has sent you a TestFlight email or public invitation link.
- Install TestFlight. Open the App Store, search for Apple’s free TestFlight app, and install it. TestFlight is the app that accepts beta invitations, installs beta builds, delivers available beta updates, and provides a route for sending feedback.
- Open the invitation. For an email invitation, open the message on the iPhone or iPad you will use for testing. For a public invitation, open the link supplied by the developer. If the message was sent to a different address, make sure you are signed in to the Apple account and device you intend to use; the developer’s invitation settings determine who can join.
- Accept the invitation in TestFlight. Follow the link or the on-screen prompt until TestFlight shows the app and the available build. A public link may ask you to meet a device or platform requirement or may report that the tester limit has been reached.
- Install the beta build. Tap the install control next to the app in TestFlight. Wait for the installation to finish, then open the app from TestFlight or the Home Screen. The beta is now installed separately from any public release workflow.
- Check for later builds. Return to TestFlight when the developer announces an update. A newer build appears only after the developer makes it available to the tester group you joined. Some internal tester groups can receive builds through automatic distribution configured by the developer; do not assume every external tester receives every build automatically.
- Send useful feedback. TestFlight provides a feedback route so you can describe what happened, identify the build, and include the steps that caused a problem. Specific reproduction steps are more useful than a report that the app “doesn’t work.”
After installation, the beta may appear alongside a public version of the same app. Check the icon, version information, and TestFlight listing before assuming which copy you opened. Installing a beta does not turn the public App Store listing into a beta.

Apple says a TestFlight build can be tested for up to 90 days. The countdown applies to that build, not necessarily to the app or to your tester relationship. When the period ends, the expired build can no longer be used for testing.
Open TestFlight and look for a newer build from the developer. If one is available, install it from the app’s TestFlight page. If no replacement appears, contact the developer through the channel that supplied the invitation. If the developer has released a public version, you can install that version from its App Store listing; do not assume a public release exists merely because the beta ended.
How to install the finished app from the App Store
Use the App Store when you want the developer’s public release rather than a temporary beta.

- Open the App Store on your iPhone or iPad.
- Search for the app or developer. Open the listing that identifies the released app. Check the developer name, description, screenshots, and version information so you do not mistake a similarly named app or a beta invitation for the public product.
- Tap the install control. Authenticate if the device requests it, then wait for the download and installation to complete.
- Open the app from the listing or Home Screen. The installed public version is managed by the App Store, not by TestFlight.
If you cannot find the listing, the developer may not have released the app publicly, may have limited it to particular regions or devices, or may have removed it. A TestFlight invitation by itself does not establish that a public App Store version is available.

App Store apps update automatically by default. When automatic updates are enabled, iOS or iPadOS handles the update without requiring you to open each listing. The exact timing depends on the operating system’s update process and the device’s conditions, so a developer’s newly released version may not appear immediately.
How do I update an iPhone app manually?
To run an update yourself on current iPhone and iPad software:
- Open the App Store.
- Tap your account/profile icon at the top of the screen.
- Tap App Updates.
- Tap Update beside the app you want to update, or tap Update All to install every listed update.
The same route works when you want to check whether a particular public release has reached your account. If the app is not listed, there may be no update available for that account at that moment, or the developer may not have published a newer version for your device or region.
How to change automatic-update behavior
To control automatic App Store updates, open Settings > Apps > App Store, then switch App Updates on or off. Leaving the setting on is the simplest choice for most people. Turning it off means you must use the App Updates screen to keep public apps current.

This setting affects public App Store apps. It does not change the fact that a TestFlight tester receives only the beta builds the developer makes available to the relevant group.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How TestFlight updates differ from App Store updates
The crucial difference is who controls the next build. For a public app, the developer submits a release to the App Store and the store manages distribution to users who have automatic updates enabled or who request an update manually. For a TestFlight app, the developer selects which beta build is available to which tester group. A newer beta may be ready for another group while your invitation has no update.
| Situation | What you should do | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| You have a TestFlight invitation but no public listing | Install TestFlight and accept the invitation | You can install only the beta builds made available to your group |
| You want the stable public release | Use the App Store listing | The release is managed through normal App Store installation and updates |
| A TestFlight build is approaching 90 days | Check TestFlight for a replacement build | The current build will stop being testable when its limit ends |
| A public app has an update available | Use automatic updates or App Store > account icon > App Updates | You can update one app or choose Update All |
| A TestFlight update is not visible | Confirm the developer released a newer build to your tester group | There may be no eligible build for your invitation yet |
Common TestFlight problems and fixes
The invitation email never arrived
- Search the mailbox for “TestFlight” and check junk, spam, promotions, and filtered folders.
- Confirm that the developer sent the invitation to the address you are checking.
- Ask the developer to resend the invitation or provide a public link if that is appropriate for the test.
- Install TestFlight before opening the invitation so the link has an app ready to handle it.
The public invitation link says you cannot join
The developer may have limited the link by device or platform, closed it, or reached the tester cap. Apple permits up to 10,000 external testers per app, but an individual public link can have a lower limit. Contact the developer rather than repeatedly opening the same link; only the developer can change the invitation settings or issue another route.
The app does not appear after accepting
Open TestFlight directly and check the list of apps associated with the Apple account and invitation. If the app is absent, the invitation may have been accepted with a different account, the developer may have removed the build, or the link may no longer be valid. The developer can confirm which address or link was authorized.

The beta has expired
An expired build cannot be extended from the iPhone. Look for a newer build in TestFlight. If none is present, ask the developer whether testing is continuing or whether a public App Store release is now the intended version.
Best Value
A newer beta build is not showing
TestFlight does not create updates on its own. The developer must upload a new build and make it available to your tester group. Check the TestFlight app, then verify with the developer that your invitation is still active and that the build was distributed to the correct group.
The App Store app is not updating
- Open App Store > account/profile icon > App Updates and look for the app.
- If it appears, tap Update beside it rather than waiting for automatic delivery.
- Check Settings > Apps > App Store > App Updates if you expected automatic updates.
- If no update is listed, the developer may not have released one for your account, device, or region yet.
What developers control—and what testers should not assume
Developers choose whether to offer TestFlight, which people enter each tester group, and which builds those groups can install. They can distribute by email or public link, apply eligibility criteria to a public link, and set a tester limit. Apple’s limits of 100 internal testers and 10,000 external testers describe the maximum scale of the service; they do not require a developer to accept that many people.
Developers also decide when a beta build is replaced and whether the app eventually receives an App Store release. A TestFlight build ending after 90 days is therefore not proof that the project has been abandoned, and it is not proof that a public release has shipped. Check the developer’s current announcement or listing for that status.
Best practices for choosing the right version
- Choose TestFlight when you intentionally want to test. Expect changes, report defects, and keep an eye on the build’s expiration.
- Choose the App Store when reliability and permanence matter more. It is the route for the released version and normal update controls.
- Do not install from an invitation you did not expect. Verify the developer and app identity before accepting a beta.
- Keep the two update systems separate in your mental checklist. App Store updates are governed by your App Store settings; TestFlight updates depend on the developer’s beta distribution.
In practical terms, an invitation answers “How do I install a TestFlight app?”: install TestFlight, accept the invitation, and install the listed build. A public listing answers how to obtain the finished app, and App Store > account icon > App Updates is the manual path when you want to update an iPhone app yourself.
