TestCafe Selectors: How to Find and Interact with Elements

A practical guide to composing reliable TestCafe selectors, using them in actions and assertions, and troubleshooting ambiguous or invisible targets.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In TestCafe, a selector is an asynchronous query for DOM elements. Start with a CSS selector, a client-side function, or another selector; refine the match with attributes, text, filters, or traversal methods; then pass the query to an action or assertion. Make the final selector specific enough to identify the intended element, and account for visibility and timing when the page changes.

Choose a selector strategy

TestCafe supports CSS keyword selectors, function-based selectors, and selector queries composed with methods. Choose the simplest strategy that identifies the intended element without relying on mutable page structure.

Approach Use it when Trade-off
CSS keyword selector A stable ID, custom attribute, tag, or CSS relationship identifies the target. Concise and familiar; selectors tied to changeable classes or deep layout relationships can be brittle.
Function-based selector A client-side function must inspect the DOM or derive a target from page state. Flexible, but the function must meet TestCafe’s documented restrictions, including not using async/await or generators.
Selector query and methods You need to filter or traverse from an existing query to a related element. Can express relationships without a long CSS path; verify that the final result is specific enough.

See TestCafe’s Element Selectors guide and Selector constructor reference for the documented initialization options.

Build a selector around a stable target

When you control the application, a dedicated test attribute such as data-test-id can separate test targeting from presentation classes and layout. First confirm the rendered element really has that attribute; then use the selector in a test:

import { Selector } from 'testcafe';

const submit = Selector('[data-test-id="submit"]');

fixture`Checkout`
    .page`https://example.com/checkout`;

test('submit checkout', async t => {
    await t.click(submit);
});

This example assumes the application renders exactly one intended submit control with that attribute. A selector variable represents a query, not a frozen snapshot of the DOM.

Match attributes

If an attribute should be matched on a particular element type, combine a base query with withAttribute:

const submit = Selector('button').withAttribute('data-test-id', 'submit');

withAttribute takes an attribute name and an optional value. String arguments use strict matching; regular expressions are also supported. Consult the withAttribute() reference for details.

Find related elements

Use find to query matching descendants of a starting selector. It accepts a CSS selector or a filter function:

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
const checkout = Selector('form').withAttribute('data-test-id', 'checkout');
const email = checkout.find('input[type="email"]');

This relationship can be more maintainable than encoding a long chain of ancestor and child selectors. The query still needs to identify the desired descendant; see the find() reference.

Match visible text

withText matches a case-sensitive string contained in text content, or a regular expression. withExactText requires an exact case-sensitive string:

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
const continueButton = Selector('button').withExactText('Continue');

A descendant’s text can cause an ancestor to match as well. If that makes a query ambiguous, constrain it with a tag, attribute, or relationship. See the withText() and withExactText() references.

Use selectors in actions and assertions

Pass a selector to an action or assertion. A simple CSS selector string can also be used directly as an action target. For example, the official typeText() API accepts a selector as its target.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Be deliberate about how many elements a query matches. TestCafe’s Element Selectors guide states: “If a page action / assertion Selector matches multiple DOM elements, TestCafe performs the action / assertion with the first matching element.” A broad query can therefore interact with the wrong match without failing for lack of a target. Use a distinctive attribute, text constraint, or relationship rather than assuming the first result is the right one.

Use selector properties such as count or exists when the test needs to inspect whether the query matched. The Selector Object reference documents the selector API.

Understand waiting, changing pages, and visibility

Selector queries are asynchronous when awaited or used by actions and assertions. Saving a selector in a variable does not capture the current DOM: using it again after an action can yield a different result if the page changed.

  • For an action target, TestCafe waits for the element to appear and become visible until the selector timeout.
  • exists and count are calculated immediately; the selector timeout does not affect them.
  • Assertion timeout is a separate control from selector timeout.

TestCafe says it does not interact with invisible elements. Its documented visibility criteria include display: none, visibility: hidden or collapse, and zero width or height on the element or an ancestor. Opacity, z-index, and page position are not part of that stated classification. A passing visibility check therefore does not necessarily mean a person would perceive the element as visible. See the filterVisible() reference.

Handle Shadow DOM and other DOM limits

Actions cannot target pseudo-elements. For Shadow DOM, first locate the shadow root, then use selector methods to traverse into it. The shadow-root result is an entry point, not a valid action or assertion target itself. Check the Selector constructor documentation for the documented Shadow DOM approach.

Framework-specific component selectors are available through additional libraries; do not assume a base CSS query automatically locates framework components. TestCafe’s API reference is the starting point for its documented API surface.

Troubleshoot selector failures

  • The action reports that no element was found: Confirm the page rendered the expected element and attribute, and that the selector describes the actual DOM. Remember that actions wait only up to the selector timeout.
  • The action affects the wrong matching element: Narrow the query. When multiple elements match, TestCafe uses the first match for an action or assertion.
  • exists is false or count is unexpected: These properties are calculated immediately, not after waiting for the selector timeout. If the page content is still changing, inspect the timing and the query separately.
  • An element is present but TestCafe will not interact with it: Check whether it or an ancestor has display: none, hidden or collapsed visibility, or zero dimensions.
  • Text matching finds an ancestor too: Text in a child can make its ancestor match. Add a tag, attribute, or relationship restriction, or use exact text when appropriate.
  • A Shadow DOM target cannot be clicked directly: Traverse from the located shadow root to the actual element; do not pass the root itself as an action or assertion target.
  • A function-based selector does not work: Review the constructor’s documented restrictions. In particular, selector functions cannot use async/await or generators.

Or skip the browser setup

If you need a rendered website image rather than a TestCafe interaction, ScreenshotNeo can return a screenshot or PDF from one GET request. It accepts cookie and consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers. An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a TestCafe selector save the element it matched when declared?

No. It represents an asynchronous query, so using it again can return a different result after the DOM changes.

Can I use a selector for an element that is not visible?

TestCafe does not interact with elements classified as invisible under its documented visibility criteria.
