Tesla began offering Robotaxi rides in Austin on June 22, 2025, after Elon Musk had described that date as tentative. The launch was a limited, geofenced service—not a citywide rollout of unsupervised taxis. Early rides used Model Y vehicles, with an employee in the front passenger seat as a safety monitor, according to launch-day reporting.
June 22 was first a target, then the launch date
On June 11, 2025, Musk said Tesla planned to start its Robotaxi service in Austin on June 22, but stressed that the date could change because the company was “being super paranoid about safety.” The Associated Press reported that wording from his post on X. The date did hold: Tesla began giving rides in Austin on June 22. Associated Press, June 11, 2025; TechCrunch, June 22, 2025

What the Austin launch actually offered
Contemporary reports described a small fleet of Model Y vehicles operating in a defined part of South Austin. Access was initially by invitation, and an employee rode in the front passenger seat as a safety monitor. The Associated Press characterized the launch fleet as “just 10 or 12 vehicles”; that is a reported launch-era estimate, not a current fleet count. Reporting also described remote monitoring. These details do not establish that the vehicles operated without human oversight or demonstrate a safety record.

Where Tesla says Robotaxi operates now
Tesla’s current support page lists limited Robotaxi service areas in six cities: Austin, Dallas, and Houston in Texas, and Miami, Orlando, and Tampa in Florida. A city listing does not mean rides are available throughout that city. Tesla says riders can view the service boundary in the app. Tesla Robotaxi Support
Tesla’s support information describes a fleet that includes Model Y and Cybercab vehicles. Its Cybercab FAQ says Cybercab rides are available in limited areas of Austin; it does not say that every listed city or every part of Austin has Cybercabs. Tesla Cybercab FAQ

For current service details, use Tesla’s app rather than relying on launch-day coverage. Tesla says riders select a destination within the displayed service area, review the estimated fare and wait time, and confirm the booking. The company says hours vary by area and pricing can change, so the estimate shown before confirmation is the relevant quote for a particular ride.

What Austin’s oversight information does—and does not—show
Austin’s autonomous-vehicle page says Texas law prevents cities from regulating autonomous vehicles and describes state-level authorization and oversight roles. The city says it works with the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles and companies using its transportation-network knowledge.
Austin also cautions that its incident reports are not validated, include only reports the city receives, and may not capture every event. The city points readers to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration collision reporting as a separate source. Its incident list should not be treated as a complete or validated safety dataset.
