Yes—Tesla removed native Steam capability from newly delivered Model S and Model X vehicles in May 2024. Customer notices said Tesla was updating the vehicle gaming computer and that the affected vehicle would “no longer [be] capable of playing Steam games.” The change applies to new deliveries identified in contemporary reports; it does not automatically mean every existing Model S or Model X has lost Steam.
What Tesla changed
Tesla introduced a native Steam Beta app for qualifying refreshed Model S and Model X vehicles in late 2022. On May 17, 2024, Electrek reported that Tesla was notifying buyers that an updated gaming computer would remove Steam capability from their vehicles. The notice reproduced in that report stated: “Tesla is updating the gaming computer in your Model X and your vehicle is no longer capable of playing Steam games.”

Tesla did not publish a confirmed explanation for the withdrawal in the reports available. Claims that the decision was driven by cost, hardware simplification or low usage remain speculation.

Steam availability has depended on the car’s exact gaming hardware, memory, software configuration and delivery timing—not simply its model name.

How to check your own Tesla
Tesla says available upgrades and features depend on the vehicle’s model, trim, model year and order date. Use the Tesla app to check eligibility for your specific car rather than relying on a generic statement about “Model S” or “Model X.” Also check the vehicle’s current software and hardware configuration, especially if it has changed hands or received service.
- Open the Tesla app paired with the vehicle.
- Review the vehicle’s available upgrades and feature eligibility.
- In the car, check the software and installed hardware information in the vehicle settings.
- Compare that exact configuration with Tesla’s current eligibility information before assuming Steam is included.
Can you add Steam back?
A controller, software purchase or ordinary settings change cannot recreate a gaming computer that Tesla removed from a vehicle. The available reports do not establish a supported retrofit that restores Steam to cars delivered without the required hardware. Owners of older qualifying cars should verify whether Steam is still present and enabled; owners whose vehicles were delivered after the reported gaming-computer change should not assume it can be added later.

What you can still use for Tesla gaming
Tesla Arcade and other supported in-car games remain separate from Steam. Tesla’s Model 3 owner’s manual documents pairing Bluetooth Classic gaming controllers for select games. USB-controller requirements vary with the vehicle’s manufacture date, available ports and port layout, so check the manual for the exact car.
- A compatible Bluetooth controller can make supported Tesla Arcade games easier to play.
- Some games require a USB controller instead, with compatibility dependent on the vehicle.
- A controller improves input for supported games but does not restore Steam or replace the removed gaming hardware.
What this means when buying or selling a Tesla
If Steam matters to you, treat it as a vehicle-specific feature that must be verified before purchase. Ask for the car’s model year, delivery timing, RAM and gaming-computer details, then confirm the feature in the Tesla app or in the vehicle itself. A listing that says “Model S” or “Model X” is not enough to establish Steam support.
