Tesla removed a 2016 post that said cars then entering production—including Model S, Model X and the upcoming Model 3—had the hardware required for eventual full self-driving. The post disappeared during a broader cleanup of Tesla’s pre-2019 blog archive in August 2024. Tesla now describes its product as Full Self-Driving (Supervised), says it does not make a vehicle autonomous, and has not published a universal path for many HW3 cars to reach the unsupervised capability implied by the old claim.

What Tesla promised in 2016

The deleted post was titled “All Tesla Cars Being Produced Now Have Full Self-Driving Hardware.” Tesla published it on October 19, 2016. It said vehicles being produced from that point forward would contain the hardware needed for eventual full self-driving capability, with software improvements delivered over the air. The statement covered Model S and Model X vehicles and the then-upcoming Model 3.

That was a historical corporate claim about future capability—not a statement that those cars were autonomous in 2016. The original page is no longer on Tesla’s site, but contemporaneous coverage and archived copies preserve its wording. See Futurism’s account and Electrek’s report.

When the post disappeared

Electrek reported on August 24, 2024, that the post had vanished around the previous day. Futurism published its report on August 28. The removal affected many pre-2019 Tesla blog entries, not only the self-driving article.

That broader cleanup provides a possible benign explanation. The deletion nevertheless removed an unusually important record of what Tesla told customers about hardware, creating the appearance that an inconvenient promise had been erased. There is no public evidence proving why Tesla removed it, so calling the action an intentional cover-up would go beyond the documented facts.

“Self-driving” then and “FSD (Supervised)” now

Tesla’s current support page calls the product Full Self-Driving (Supervised). Tesla says the system can perform driving tasks while an attentive driver supervises, but it “does not make the vehicle autonomous.” The driver remains responsible and must be ready to intervene. Availability can vary with vehicle hardware, software version, model year, region and regulatory approval. The current description is at Tesla’s FSD support page.

Those terms are not interchangeable:

  • Driver assistance: software steers, brakes or changes lanes while a human remains responsible.
  • Supervised FSD: Tesla’s current name for its broader assistance package; the driver must continuously monitor it.
  • Unsupervised autonomy: a different capability in which the system can operate without active human monitoring.

Tesla’s marketing name does not itself establish an SAE automation level. A car that can complete an impressive supervised drive today has not necessarily met the reliability, redundancy or regulatory requirements for unsupervised operation.

Why the hardware generations matter

HW2 and HW2.5

Some older Teslas were delivered with earlier Autopilot computers. Tesla later documented a retrofit route for certain vehicles, replacing HW2.5 with its HW3 computer. The service manual includes a procedure titled “Car Computer — HW2.5 to HW3 (Retrofit)” for applicable Model 3 configurations, including build-date checks, wiring work where required, software-tool steps and configuration: Tesla’s service procedure.

A retrofit procedure is not a guarantee that every HW2 or HW2.5 vehicle qualifies. Eligibility depends on model, configuration, FSD purchase history, market and Tesla’s service program.

HW3

HW3 is Tesla’s in-house FSD computer and can run current supervised features in eligible cars. The unresolved question is whether it can eventually deliver the unsupervised capability suggested by the 2016 promise.

In January 2025, reporting on an earnings-call discussion said Elon Musk acknowledged that HW3 cars might need computer replacement to achieve unsupervised FSD. That is narrower than saying HW3 is impossible or that Tesla has begun a universal retrofit. The reports are available from Electrek and TechCrunch. Tesla has not published a complete HW3 replacement program, timetable or universal remedy.

HW4/AI4

Newer Teslas use a more powerful AI-computing platform and newer camera configurations. More computing capacity does not, by itself, prove that HW3 cannot achieve future autonomy or that HW4 will do so. Computing power, camera performance, redundancy, software compatibility, safety validation and regulatory approval all matter—and Tesla has not promised that a newer platform will become unsupervised in every market.

What Tesla’s AI-computer page actually offers

Tesla’s AI-computer support page says FSD purchasers with computer 2.0 or 2.5 may qualify for a complimentary upgrade to computer 3.0. Certain early vehicles may also need camera replacements. Tesla lists a paid upgrade at $1,000 plus applicable tax, including installation, for certain eligible cases. The page also says the upgrade does not make a vehicle fully autonomous.

That page documents the older HW2.0/HW2.5-to-HW3 path. It is not a promise of a free HW3-to-HW4 upgrade or of whatever future computer might be required for unsupervised driving. FSD subscribers do not receive the complimentary hardware upgrade described for qualifying purchasers, although they may be offered an eligible paid upgrade.

The timeline from promise to unresolved retrofit

  1. October 19, 2016: Tesla publishes the claim that all cars then being produced have full-self-driving hardware.
  2. 2019: Tesla introduces HW3 and discusses hardware upgrades for some earlier vehicles.
  3. 2023: Tesla begins producing vehicles with newer HW4 hardware.
  4. August 2024: Tesla’s old post and much of its pre-2019 blog archive disappear.
  5. January 2025: Musk is reported to say HW3 may require a computer replacement for unsupervised FSD.
  6. 2025–2026: Tesla’s customer-facing language continues to emphasize supervised driving rather than autonomous operation.

What different owners can do now

Owner situation Practical position
HW2 or HW2.5 with purchased FSD Check Tesla’s eligibility for a complimentary HW3 upgrade and, where applicable, camera replacement.
HW3 with purchased FSD Current supervised features may work, but Tesla has not documented a universal route to unsupervised autonomy.
HW3 with an FSD subscription Subscription eligibility is separate from eligibility for a free hardware retrofit.
HW4/AI4 vehicle Newer hardware does not change Tesla’s current supervised-driving disclaimer.
Used-Tesla buyer Confirm whether FSD is attached to the vehicle or account and review the purchase documents.
Owner considering a legal claim Preserve contracts, invoices, Tesla screenshots, service records and archived marketing; remedies depend on local law and contract terms.

Check your computer and FSD status

  1. On the touchscreen, open Controls → Software → Additional Vehicle Information.
  2. Record the displayed AI computer or FSD computer type.
  3. Verify whether FSD was purchased outright, inherited with the car or accessed by subscription.
  4. Check for early-production camera configuration and the vehicle’s registered country.
  5. In the Tesla app, look under Upgrades → Software Upgrades → Full Self-Driving (Supervised), or ask a service center to confirm eligibility in writing.

A car can have compatible hardware without having purchased FSD. Conversely, a current trial or subscription does not establish entitlement to a future autonomous feature. Tesla’s subscription page currently lists $99 per month, subject to change, and requires computer 3.0 or newer: Tesla subscription support.

Transfers, upgrades and the limits of current remedies

Tesla’s FSD transfer program ended March 31, 2026, according to its support page: Tesla’s transfer notice. That means buying another Tesla should not be treated as an automatic way to move a prior FSD purchase.

As currently documented, there is no universal free HW3-to-newer-computer retrofit, guaranteed delivery date for unsupervised FSD, automatic refund for the difference between the old promise and today’s supervised system, or automatic transfer of purchased FSD. A hardware upgrade to HW3 is not the same as a promise of unsupervised autonomy.

What the deletion means legally and practically

The removed post may be relevant evidence in a consumer-protection or contract dispute, but a historical marketing statement is not automatically a contractual warranty. The outcome can depend on jurisdiction, purchase date, whether the buyer was the original purchaser, arbitration provisions, limitation periods and the exact sales documents.

Nothing in the documented deletion establishes fraud or entitles every owner to compensation. Owners considering action should preserve records and obtain advice specific to their jurisdiction rather than relying on the headline or on Tesla’s marketing terminology.

Bottom line

Tesla did remove the 2016 post documenting its claim that newly produced cars had the hardware needed for full self-driving. The company now expressly sells FSD as supervised driver assistance, not autonomy. Some HW2 and HW2.5 owners have a documented HW3 upgrade route, while HW3 owners face the central unresolved question: whether Tesla will provide the hardware and support needed for the unsupervised capability implied by the old promise. Neither a $99 subscription, a documented older retrofit nor a newer Tesla guarantees that outcome.
