The most effective privacy change is on the vehicle touchscreen: open Controls > Software > Data Sharing and switch off optional vehicle-data, road-segment or analytics, and cabin-camera sharing that you do not need. Then review connected third-party apps and revoke access to vehicle location, live data, charging history, and commands. These controls reduce data leaving the car, but they do not stop local location processing for maps, navigation, traffic, or safety systems, and Tesla documents exceptions for serious safety events.
What Tesla’s privacy controls can—and cannot—do
Tesla separates several kinds of processing that are easy to confuse. Your car can use its location, cameras, microphones, and vehicle sensors locally to provide features even when optional sharing is disabled. A separate setting determines whether selected vehicle or camera information is sent to Tesla for analytics, road-segment improvements, or other stated purposes. Connected apps create a third path: an app can receive data or issue commands under permissions you granted, subject to that company’s own privacy policy.

Tesla’s Customer Privacy Notice is marked Updated February 2026. Tesla’s stated policy is that it does not sell personal information. It also says that, unless there is a serious safety concern such as an accident, it generally does not associate ordinary vehicle location with the owner’s account or keep a history of where the owner has been. Those statements describe Tesla’s documented practices, not a promise that no location data can ever leave the vehicle.
Turn off optional sharing on the vehicle
Use the Data Sharing screen
- On the center display, tap Controls.
- Open Software.
- Tap Data Sharing.
- Review every switch shown on that screen. Disable optional vehicle-data sharing, road-segment or analytics sharing, and cabin-camera analytics when those choices are available and you do not need them.
- Read any confirmation text, then leave the setting disabled. Tesla says you can change these choices again at any time.
Exact labels and the switches offered can vary by model, software version, and region. If a setting is absent, do not assume another switch controls the same data. Check the current wording on your vehicle and Tesla’s support documentation for that software release.

What each choice changes
| Control or data path | Privacy effect when disabled or restricted | Possible feature trade-off | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Optional vehicle-data sharing | Reduces optional transmission of selected vehicle information to Tesla. | Some analytics, diagnostics, or improvement programs may have less data; the exact impact is not stated for every model or region. | Core vehicle operation and local processing can continue. |
| Road-segment or driving analytics | Stops the optional road or analytics contribution where the switch is offered. | Potentially less contribution to traffic, routing, or road-feature improvement; Tesla does not state a universal feature loss for every vehicle. | Availability and wording vary by software and market. |
| Allow Cabin Camera Analytics | Prevents optional cabin-camera analytics sharing unless you later opt in. | Features that depend on sending cabin-camera analytics may not work or improve. | Tesla describes safety-critical event exceptions. |
| Third-party permissions | Stops a connected app from receiving the selected category or sending permitted commands after revocation. | Remote control, charging automation, route tools, or monitoring in that app may stop working. | The app’s own privacy policy governs data it already received. |
Disabling a switch is a privacy reduction, not a complete “offline mode.” The car still needs data internally for safety and navigation functions.
Why location can still be used after sharing is off
Local location functions remain active
Maps, navigation, route calculation, and related vehicle functions use location on the car. Turning off optional Data Sharing does not remove the location capability or erase the position needed to display your vehicle on a map. Real-time traffic and intelligent-routing behavior can also depend on network services, so the convenience effect of disabling an analytics switch is model-, service-, and region-dependent rather than a guaranteed loss of navigation.
Tesla’s stated location practice
Tesla says it generally does not associate ordinary vehicle location with your owner account or keep a history of where you have been, unless there is a serious safety concern. A collision, airbag deployment, automatic emergency braking event, or another documented safety situation can cause location or camera information to be transmitted to support emergency response and safety improvement. Treat this as an exception to the ordinary policy, not a setting you can disable while retaining those safety functions.

If your concern is a family member, employer, or another person who has access to the account, review account security and connected-app access as well as vehicle sharing. A person with authorized account access can see whatever the Tesla app or an approved integration exposes, even when optional analytics sharing is disabled.
Audit the Tesla app and your account
Request a copy of stored account data
Tesla provides a Data Privacy Request flow for obtaining a copy of data associated with your account. Use the Tesla app’s account controls and open Security & Privacy; labels can change as the app is updated. A data request helps you distinguish account records from information processed only on the vehicle and shows which services have retained information under Tesla’s documented process.
Delete the Tesla Account when appropriate
The same account privacy controls include an account-deletion flow. Deletion is a major step: it can affect vehicle access, app functionality, ownership records, service interactions, and any other feature that relies on the account. Tesla says deletion does not override legal, financial, transaction, or ongoing legal-proceeding retention duties. In other words, a deletion request may remove or de-identify eligible account data while some records must remain for a stated legal or operational period.

- Before deleting, make sure you have any data copy you need.
- Confirm which vehicle, driver, and payment or service relationships are attached to the account.
- Remove third-party integrations first so another service does not retain access credentials or continue receiving data.
- Keep confirmation of the request and note the date in case you need to follow up.
Revoke third-party Tesla app access
Third-party apps are an independent exposure path. Tesla says each app must request permission and that you can revoke permission. Revocation limits future access through Tesla’s integration; it does not automatically delete data the app already copied. The third party’s terms and privacy policy govern that retained information.
Permission-audit checklist
- List every connected app, service, automation, or smart-home integration associated with your Tesla account.
- For each one, inspect the requested scopes rather than approving a broad bundle by habit.
- Remove Vehicle Location unless the app genuinely needs it.
- Remove live vehicle data access when periodic status is unnecessary.
- Remove charging history access if the app does not need energy records.
- Remove vehicle commands such as lock, unlock, climate, charging control, or movement-related actions unless the convenience justifies the risk.
- Revoke and then verify in the app that the integration can no longer read status or issue a command.
- Delete the third-party account or request deletion from that provider if you want previously received data removed.
Use the narrowest permission set that supports the feature you actually use. An app that only needs charging notifications should not also receive location and command permissions. Recheck this list after changing phones, selling the car, installing a new automation, or authorizing a temporary service.
Camera, Sentry Mode, Dashcam, voice, and browser data
Sentry Mode and Dashcam recordings
Tesla states that Sentry Mode and Dashcam recordings are generally stored on the vehicle or on attached external storage and are not shared with Tesla. Storage location matters: anyone who can access the car, removable media, or a copied clip may still access the recording. Protect the physical storage and delete clips you no longer need.

Cabin-camera analytics
Cabin-camera analytics are off unless you enable the relevant sharing setting. Tesla’s support wording identifies the path as Controls > Software > Data Sharing > Allow Cabin Camera Analytics. Keep it off if you do not want optional cabin-camera analytics shared. Tesla’s privacy materials still describe safety-critical events as an exception, so disabling analytics is not a guarantee that no camera information can ever be transmitted.
Voice commands and browsing history
Tesla’s data-request table lists voice commands and browsing history as processed on the vehicle and not shared with Tesla. That describes Tesla’s documented handling; it does not prevent someone with physical or authorized account access from seeing information displayed or stored in the car. Clear local history when selling, loaning, or returning the vehicle, and remove paired phones and saved destinations.

|---|---|---|
| Minimize optional Tesla analytics | Disable optional vehicle-data, road-segment or analytics, and cabin-camera switches in Data Sharing. | Local maps, navigation, safety processing, and documented safety-event transmissions remain. |
| Prevent an app from tracking trips | Revoke Vehicle Location and live-data permissions from every connected app. | The app may retain data already received under its own policy. |
| Keep remote convenience features | Retain only the specific command or status permissions required by the app; remove location and charging history if unnecessary. | Removing a required permission can disable part of the integration. |
| Protect camera footage | Leave cabin-camera analytics off; secure or remove Sentry/Dashcam storage. | Safety-event exceptions and anyone with physical storage access remain relevant. |
| Leave the Tesla ecosystem | Request a data copy, revoke integrations, then use the account-deletion flow. | Legal, financial, transaction, or litigation-related retention can continue. |
Common problems and fixes
The Data Sharing menu is missing
Confirm that you are looking under Controls > Software, not the mobile app’s general privacy page. Menu names differ by model, software release, and region. Install the vehicle’s available software update if appropriate, then check the current Tesla support instructions for your configuration.
Best Value
A feature stopped working after revocation
Identify which permission the feature needs. Navigation and core safety functions should not be treated as third-party permissions, but an external route planner, charging monitor, or automation may require location, live data, charging history, or commands. Restore only the minimum permission needed, and remove unrelated scopes.
You deleted an app but it still has Tesla data
Deleting the app from your phone does not necessarily delete the provider’s account or stored records. Revoke its Tesla authorization, sign in to the provider, and use its privacy or deletion request process. Tesla’s revocation controls cannot dictate the third party’s retention schedule.
You need evidence after an accident
Do not erase local footage or vehicle records before preserving them. Tesla documents safety-event handling separately from optional analytics, and a serious event can involve location or camera transmission. Save relevant Sentry or Dashcam files to secure storage and follow applicable legal or insurance instructions.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →A practical privacy baseline
For most owners, a sensible baseline is to disable optional Data Sharing switches you do not need, keep cabin-camera analytics off, grant third-party apps no more than the permissions required for one specific task, and periodically request or review account data. This approach reduces routine sharing without pretending that a connected vehicle can provide maps, safety systems, and remote services with no location or telemetry processing at all.
Tesla’s published position remains that it does not sell personal information and that ordinary location is generally not tied to the owner account or retained as a travel history. The meaningful limits are the local processing required for vehicle functions, safety-event exceptions, data already held by third-party apps, and records Tesla must retain for legal or financial reasons.
