Tesla Powerwall alternatives are not interchangeable boxes. The right choice depends on your solar inverter, the loads you want during an outage, starting current for motors such as air conditioners, warranty limits, and the installation quote in your area. Current comparisons identify FranklinWH, MidNite Solar, Sigenergy, Enphase, SolarEdge, Generac, LG, Panasonic, Anker, sonnen and Savant as alternatives worth investigating, but no single model is best for every U.S. home. Use the specifications below to create a shortlist, then have a qualified installer model your backed-up circuits and utility tariff.
Which Tesla Powerwall alternatives are available?
EnergySage’s 2026 battery guide highlights FranklinWH, MidNite Solar, Sigenergy, Enphase and SolarEdge among notable alternatives. The Home Battery Report’s August 2026 datasheet comparison also includes Generac, LG, Panasonic, Anker, sonnen and Savant. Those lists are starting points, not a ranking: availability, installer familiarity and utility approval vary by state and even by local service territory. A battery may be attractive because your utility offers weak net-metering credits, your area has frequent outages, or you want more control over when solar energy is used. EnergySage describes those as general reasons to consider storage; they do not establish savings for an individual household. Your rate schedule, export rules and outage history determine the financial case.

New solar installations
For a new photovoltaic system, you can select the inverter and battery as one design. That allows the installer to choose DC-coupled or AC-coupled equipment, size the service equipment correctly and place the backup loads panel where it is practical. Ask for a one-line diagram showing the panels, inverter, battery, gateway or controller, main panel and backed-up circuits before signing.

Adding a battery to existing solar
Retrofits are constrained by the inverter already on the wall. The 2026 installer comparison describes Powerwall 3 as using an integrated hybrid solar inverter, Enphase IQ Battery 10C as AC-coupled with embedded microinverters, and FranklinWH aPower 2 as AC-coupled and inverter-agnostic. In practice, an existing microinverter system may favor an AC-coupled battery, while replacing or reconfiguring a string-inverter system can make a hybrid design sensible. Have the installer verify model compatibility, communications, rapid-shutdown requirements and whether your existing equipment remains under warranty. The architecture descriptions are manufacturer specifications reproduced by OC Solar, not independent testing: OC Solar’s 2026 comparison.
Why coupling affects outage operation
During a grid outage, the battery system must form a stable local grid and control solar production. The controller, inverter and any existing solar inverter must be approved to operate together in island mode. A quote that lists only battery kWh can therefore conceal required gateways, load-control hardware, rewiring or an inverter replacement.
Published capacity and power: the numbers side by side
The table uses specifications reported by OC Solar from manufacturer datasheets. They are not laboratory measurements, and the figures can change with firmware, configuration or regional model variants.

| Tesla Powerwall 3 | 13.5 kWh | 11.5 kW | Integrated hybrid solar inverter | Usable energy and continuous AC output as listed in the manufacturer datasheet |
| Enphase IQ Battery 10C | 10.0 kWh | 7.08 kW | AC-coupled; embedded microinverters | Usable energy and continuous output as listed in the manufacturer datasheet |
| FranklinWH aPower 2 | 15 kWh | 10 kW | AC-coupled; inverter-agnostic | Usable energy and continuous output as listed in the manufacturer datasheet |
EnergySage’s 2026 guide lists 15 kWh for aPower 2, 10 kWh for IQ Battery 10C and 9.7 kWh for SolarEdge BAT-10K. Small differences between a guide and another datasheet can reflect rounding, usable-versus-nameplate definitions or a different regional revision; ask the installer which exact model and rating appears on your proposal.

Size the battery to loads you will actually back up
Capacity (kWh) answers how long energy can be supplied. Continuous power (kW) answers how much load can run at once. Starting or surge power answers whether a compressor, pump or well motor can start without the inverter tripping. A large kWh figure cannot compensate for insufficient kW.
- List outage priorities. Separate refrigeration, lighting, internet, medical equipment, garage doors, well pumps, heating and cooling from optional loads such as electric vehicle charging, electric resistance heat, pool equipment and workshop tools.
- Record running watts. Use appliance nameplates or a clamp-meter measurement. Convert watts to kilowatts and total the circuits that may run simultaneously.
- Identify motor starts. Note locked-rotor or inrush current for air-conditioner compressors, heat pumps, pumps and compressors. Request the battery’s published surge duration and motor-start rating, not merely a marketing statement.
- Estimate runtime. Divide usable kWh by the average kW of the backed-up load, then allow for conversion losses and reserve settings. An installer should model seasonal HVAC duty cycle rather than assume the nameplate load runs continuously.
- Choose the backed-up panel. If the calculated peak exceeds the battery’s continuous output, move circuits to a non-backed-up panel, add load management or specify additional battery/inverter capacity.
Air-conditioner starting claims need attribution
FranklinWH states that “The aPower 2 can deliver a surge current powerful enough to start a 5-ton A/C while running essential home loads without tripping or overloading.” That is FranklinWH’s product claim, not an independent test result. Confirm the exact compressor, voltage, ambient conditions, required surge duration and whether a soft starter or load-management device is included in your quote. Compare warranties by limits, not just years
A headline warranty period is only one condition. Check the capacity-retention threshold, cycle or energy-throughput cap, permitted operating temperature, installation and registration requirements, transferability, labor coverage and exclusions. The Home Battery Report’s 2026 comparison lists Enphase IQ Battery 10C at up to 15 years or 6,000 cycles, with a 60% capacity threshold. It lists FranklinWH aPower 2 at 15 years or 60 MWh of throughput, whichever comes first. FranklinWH separately advertises a 15-year aPower 2 warranty. Read the current written warranty for your model and jurisdiction before purchase: Home Battery Report warranty table and FranklinWH product information.

“15 years” can end earlier if a throughput or cycle limit is reached. Conversely, a system used rarely for outages may never approach that limit. Ask the installer to put the applicable capacity guarantee and expected annual throughput in the proposal.

Efficiency percentages are not automatically comparable
Manufacturers publish efficiency on different bases, including AC round-trip, DC round-trip and grid-to-battery-to-load. The Home Battery Report warns that similarly labeled percentages may therefore measure different parts of the energy path. Before comparing two numbers, ask:
- Is the figure AC-to-AC, DC-to-DC or grid-to-load?
- Does it include the inverter, standby consumption and backup gateway?
- Was it measured at a particular load, temperature or battery state of charge?
- Is it a peak value, a nominal value or a warranty assumption?
For a retrofit, the relevant comparison is the complete path from your existing solar inverter through the battery and back to the backed-up loads. A slightly lower published percentage may still be the simpler and less expensive compatible design.
Use guide prices only to frame local quotes
EnergySage’s 2026 guide gives these example figures per kWh: $998 for Tesla Powerwall 3, $1,177 for FranklinWH aPower 2, $1,404 for Enphase IQ Battery 10C and $1,532 for SolarEdge BAT-10K. They are guide estimates, not guaranteed installed prices. The final amount depends on the installer, battery count, panel or inverter work, permitting, trenching, service upgrades, taxes, incentives and local labor. See the date-stamped figures in EnergySage’s 2026 guide.
Recommended Free Tools
Request at least two itemized proposals. Each should separate equipment, labor, electrical and structural work, permit fees, commissioning, monitoring, warranty labor and optional load-control hardware. Confirm whether the quote assumes one battery, expansion modules, a new backed-up loads panel or a main-panel upgrade. A low per-kWh number can become expensive if required integration work is omitted.

Questions to put in an installer quote
- Compatibility: What exact battery, inverter, gateway and firmware versions are proposed, and are they approved with my existing solar equipment?
- Load design: Which circuits are backed up, what is their calculated running load, and what motor-start or surge margin remains?
- Solar during outages: Can the system recharge from solar while islanded, and what happens when the battery is full?
- Expansion: Can more batteries be added later, and must expansion units match age, model and firmware?
- Installation: Where will equipment be mounted, what clearances and temperature limits apply, and is outdoor siting permitted for this model?
- Permits and utility: Who handles electrical permits, interconnection paperwork, inspection and permission to operate?
- Service: Who responds to faults, how are replacement parts supplied, and is local labor covered by the warranty?
- Operations: What reserve setting, time-of-use schedule and outage mode will be configured, and can you change them in the app?
Match the alternative to the project
Choose an AC-coupled retrofit when existing solar is valuable
If your current array uses microinverters or a string inverter that you do not want to replace, an AC-coupled design can add storage while preserving much of the existing system. Verify that the battery can island the solar inverter, that the gateway supports your model and that any additional conversion losses are included in the runtime estimate. Enphase’s IQ Battery 10C and FranklinWH aPower 2 are described as AC-coupled in the OC Solar comparison, but compatibility still requires a model-specific design.
Consider an integrated hybrid inverter for a new system
A battery with an integrated hybrid solar inverter can reduce the number of major boxes and simplify a new installation. It may be less attractive if you already own a functioning inverter or if your installer lacks experience with that platform. The proposal should show the complete system rather than treating the battery as a standalone appliance.
Prioritize high surge capability for compressor-heavy homes
Homes with central air conditioning, heat pumps, well pumps or older refrigerators should compare published surge and motor-start data before capacity. If no tested or guaranteed surge figure is provided, ask for a load-management plan or soft starter instead of assuming the battery will start the equipment.
Prioritize service coverage when outages are consequential
For medical equipment, remote properties or areas with long repair times, installer support and parts availability may matter more than a small efficiency or capacity difference. Get the service escalation process and labor terms in writing.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Comparing nameplate kWh
Use usable capacity under the manufacturer’s operating limits. Ask whether the quoted figure is usable energy, total cell capacity or a recommended daily window.
Assuming a battery backs up the whole house
Whole-home backup may require a larger inverter, service equipment and load shedding. A critical-loads panel can be more practical and less expensive, but only if the circuits are selected before installation.
Treating a vendor statement as a test
Manufacturer claims, including the aPower 2 5-ton air-conditioner statement, should be checked against your equipment and installation conditions. The Home Battery Report explicitly says it did not lab-test or hardware-test the batteries; its figures are manufacturer datasheet specifications.

Daily time-of-use cycling can reach a warranty throughput limit sooner than occasional outage use. Ask the installer to estimate annual energy throughput with your intended schedule and reserve percentage.
Accepting an unitemized quote
Require separate lines for batteries, inverter or gateway, labor, permits, panel work, trenching, monitoring and future service. This exposes missing scope before work begins.
A practical decision sequence
- Collect twelve months of electric bills, your rate schedule and outage history.
- Inventory essential circuits and motor loads; measure uncertain loads.
- Document the existing solar inverter, microinverters, panel ratings and monitoring hardware.
- Obtain a design from an installer familiar with your equipment and local utility.
- Compare usable kWh, continuous kW, surge capability, architecture, warranty limits and total installed price in one worksheet.
- Check permits, interconnection, equipment location, service response and expansion rules.
- Choose the proposal that meets your backed-up-load and outage goals with clearly defined scope—not simply the highest capacity or lowest guide price.
What to expect from the alternatives landscape
EnergySage and The Home Battery Report show a broad market rather than a single successor to Powerwall. FranklinWH, Enphase and SolarEdge offer different inverter and battery approaches; Generac, LG, Panasonic, Anker, sonnen, MidNite Solar, Sigenergy and Savant add further platform choices. Product availability, certifications and installer coverage change, so confirm that the exact model is offered and permitted in your state before relying on a published comparison.
The strongest shortlist is the one that fits your solar architecture, delivers enough continuous and starting power for the loads you will actually run, and comes with a warranty and service path you can use locally. Treat every published specification and guide price as a dated input to that design conversation, not as proof that one battery will outperform another in your home.
