Terraria world sizes at a glance
Terraria generates three world sizes. The size changes the map’s tile dimensions, the amount of terrain available for exploration, and the practical travel distance between areas. It does not set difficulty, seed, player limit, or server port; those are separate creation or server settings.

| World size | Dimensions | Official positioning | Vanilla server setting |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small | 4,200 × 1,200 tiles | Ideal for a quick, single-player experience | autocreate=1 or -autocreate 1 |
| Medium | 6,400 × 1,800 tiles | Bigger for prolonged exploration or bringing a friend | autocreate=2 or -autocreate 2 |
| Large | 8,400 × 2,400 tiles | Super-sized for long-term progression and multiple players | autocreate=3 or -autocreate 3 |
These are world-generation sizes, not three quality levels. A small world can contain the same broad progression path as a large one, but it compresses biomes, structures, and travel into less horizontal and vertical space. A large world offers more room and longer routes, while also asking the host to manage a larger map in memory.
Which size should your server use?
Make the choice from four practical factors: expected player count, campaign length, how much travel your group enjoys, and the memory capacity of the host. There is no single best size for every server.

Choose small for short sessions and tiny groups
A small world is a good fit when one player, or a very small group, wants to start playing quickly and reach areas without long journeys. It is useful for a temporary server, a weekend map, or players who prefer a compact build area. Shorter routes make it easier for new players to regroup and reduce the amount of unexplored terrain that must be loaded and maintained.
- Best for solo play or a very small cooperative group.
- Good when sessions are short and fast traversal matters.
- Useful when the host has limited memory headroom.
- Less suitable for a long-running group that wants many distant bases or extensive building projects.
Choose medium as the usual cooperative default
Medium is the sensible starting point for a small server expecting normal progression with a friend or a handful of players. It provides substantially more room than small without making every trip feel like a cross-map expedition. If you are unsure and do not have a specific reason to prefer either extreme, medium is the least-regret choice.
- Balances exploration time and travel time.
- Works well for a conventional cooperative campaign.
- Leaves room for multiple bases and longer-term projects.
- Usually easier to administer than a large map on a modest host.
Choose large for long campaigns and several players
Large is intended for long-term progression and multiple players. It gives a bigger canvas for separated bases, repeated exploration, and groups that want distance between projects. The trade-off is travel: players may spend more time reaching an event, biome, or teammate, especially before they acquire mobility upgrades.
- Best for several regular players sharing a persistent world.
- Useful when the group expects a lengthy campaign or extensive construction.
- Provides more room for players who prefer to discover terrain independently.
- Requires more memory than a smaller world; leave the host adequate headroom rather than choosing it solely for the extra space.
World size versus other server choices
World size is only one part of generation. Before creating a map, decide the seed, difficulty, world name, and player limit independently. A large world does not automatically mean a harder game, and a small world does not change the selected difficulty.
| Decision | What it controls | Why it is separate from size |
|---|---|---|
| World size | Map dimensions and available terrain | Determines space and travel distance |
| Seed | The generated arrangement of terrain and features | Two worlds of the same size can have different layouts |
| Difficulty | The selected gameplay difficulty | Changes challenge rules, not the map dimensions |
| Max players | How many connections the server accepts | Sets capacity, not the amount of terrain |
| Port and password | How players connect and whether access is restricted | Networking and access settings are independent of generation |
Use the player limit to match your actual group rather than assuming a large map requires a high limit. Conversely, raising the limit does not create more terrain; if many players will explore at once, consider whether medium or large gives them enough room to avoid crowding.

Set a world size in a vanilla Terraria server
The vanilla dedicated server reads settings from a configuration file such as serverconfig.txt. Stop the server before editing creation settings so it does not overwrite your changes or continue using an already-open world.
Using serverconfig.txt
- Stop the server cleanly. Use the server’s normal stop command or close it after saving. Do not edit a live configuration while the process is still running.
- Open the configuration file. Locate the file passed to the server at startup, commonly named
serverconfig.txt. - Set the creation size. Add or change exactly one of these lines:
autocreate=1autocreate=2autocreate=3The values mean small, medium, and large respectively.
- Set the intended world path. Use the
world=entry for the.wldfile the server should load or create. Keep this path consistent so you know which file is being used. - Review the other settings separately. Keep seed, world name, difficulty, maximum players, port, password, and message of the day as their own entries. Do not try to encode those choices in
autocreate. - Start the server again. If the world file at the configured path does not exist, the server creates one using the selected size. If the file already exists, the server loads it instead.
A minimal example for creating a medium world might look like this:
world=/path/to/worlds/co-op-medium.wld
autocreate=2
worldname=Co-op Medium
seed=your-seed
difficulty=0
maxplayers=8
port=7777
password=choose-a-password
motd=Welcome
The exact valid values for difficulty and the paths on disk depend on your server build and operating system. The important size rule is the mapping: 1 is small, 2 is medium, and 3 is large.
Starting the server with command-line options
If you launch the executable directly rather than using a configuration file, use the command-line equivalent:

TerrariaServer -autocreate 1
TerrariaServer -autocreate 2
TerrariaServer -autocreate 3
These options tell the server to create a world only when one is not found at the specified location. In a real startup command you will normally also provide the world file or a configuration file, then set the port, player limit, password, seed, and other options independently.
How the world= and autocreate settings interact
The most common setup mistake is expecting autocreate to resize an existing map. It does not. The server first checks whether the world file identified by world= exists:
- No file at that path:
autocreatedetermines whether the new world is small, medium, or large. - File already exists: the server loads that world. Its original dimensions remain unchanged, even if you edit
autocreate.
Changing from small to large therefore requires a new world file. Choose a new path or rename the old file, set the desired autocreate value, and start the server. Keep the original .wld file as a backup if players may want to return to it. A newly generated map will not contain the buildings, chests, characters, or progression from the old map unless you use separate, version-appropriate transfer tools; changing the setting alone cannot migrate that content.
Can you resize a Terraria world after it is created?
Not through the vanilla server settings. World dimensions are fixed during generation. Editing autocreate after creation changes nothing while the existing .wld file remains at the configured path.
Recommended Free Tools
To use another size:
- Stop the server and make a backup of the existing world file.
- Choose a different filename or move the old file out of the configured world directory.
- Set
world=to the new file path and setautocreateto 1, 2, or 3. - Start the server and allow the new world to generate.
- Confirm the new map loads, then tell players which world they should join. Keep the backup available until everyone agrees the new map is the one to keep.
If the server keeps loading the old map, check the absolute or relative path in world=, look for duplicate .wld files, and verify that the process is reading the configuration file you edited.

Memory and performance considerations
Larger worlds need more memory because the server must manage more tiles and world data. However, there is no universal current RAM threshold that guarantees a particular size will run well: actual use depends on the Terraria version, operating system, other services on the machine, active players, and server modifications.
Use these practical checks instead of relying on a single advertised number:
- Leave operating-system and backup overhead available; do not allocate all host memory to Terraria.
- Watch memory usage while several players are exploring different parts of the map, not only while everyone is standing at spawn.
- Check for stuttering, disconnects, or the operating system terminating the process during generation and busy sessions.
- If a large map is unstable, test a medium map with the same player count and server settings before changing unrelated variables.
- Remember that many small worlds can be more memory-efficient than one large world, depending on how you run them. A single large map is not automatically the cheapest arrangement.
World size also affects player experience even when the server is powerful. A large map may make regrouping and early-game travel tedious; a small map may make several builders compete for the same convenient locations. Treat performance and geography as separate reasons for your decision.
What to do on a managed server
Managed Terraria hosting typically exposes the same underlying choices through a control panel: select a world file, enter a seed, choose a size or an autocreate value, and start the server. The labels differ by provider, so look for a setting named “world size,” “generate world,” “autocreate,” or “server configuration.”
Before regenerating, use the panel’s backup or download feature. A control panel may automatically restart the process, but it cannot make an existing world larger; you still need to create and select a new .wld file. If the panel hides the configuration file, its console or startup-parameters page should show whether the server is being launched with -autocreate 1, -autocreate 2, or -autocreate 3.

TShock and other server distributions
TShock is a separate Terraria server distribution with additional administration features. Its startup flow still asks the administrator to select an existing world or create one. Do not assume that a panel or command used by vanilla Terraria has identical behavior in every TShock release: the available prompts and options can vary by version.

A decision checklist before you generate
- How many regular players? One or two usually do not need a large map; several active explorers may appreciate one.
- How long will the campaign run? A weekend or short test favors small; a persistent community world favors medium or large.
- How much travel is fun? Choose small or medium if your group dislikes long trips, and large if distance and independent exploration are part of the appeal.
- How much host memory is available? Select the largest map the machine can run comfortably, not the largest option by default.
- Are you preserving the old map? Back up the current
.wldfile before generating another size. - Are you editing the right startup configuration? Confirm the server actually reads the file or command line you changed.
Troubleshooting common size problems
The server created the wrong size
Stop the server and inspect both the autocreate value and the world path. If a file already existed at world=, the server correctly loaded it instead of creating a new map. Move or rename that file only after making a backup, then start generation again.
Changing autocreate had no visible effect
This is expected when the same .wld file is still present. autocreate is a creation fallback, not a resize command. Point world= to a new filename or remove the old file from the creation path after backing it up.
The server struggles after switching to large
Check memory and CPU usage during world generation and while players explore separately. Reduce the map size to medium for a controlled comparison, stop other services on the host, and confirm that backups or antivirus scans are not competing for resources. There is no single RAM number that applies to every installation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsPlayers cannot find the new map
Verify the server console’s loaded-world path, the filename in world=, and the connection port. A new world may have the same display name as an old one, so use a distinctive filename and worldname while testing.
Recommended defaults
For a two- to four-player cooperative server with normal progression, start with medium (autocreate=2). Use small (autocreate=1) when quick traversal and low overhead matter more than building room. Use large (autocreate=3) for a persistent group that expects several players, long-term construction, and a host with comfortable memory headroom. Whichever option you choose, record the world path, back up the generated file, and remember that changing the setting later means generating a separate world rather than resizing the current one.
