The TerraMaster D8 Hybrid 2 puts four SATA drive bays and four M.2 NVMe slots in one direct-attached enclosure, so you can combine hard-drive capacity with solid-state storage. Its 10Gbps USB connection is the key limit: fast NVMe drives cannot deliver their full standalone speeds through it. It may suit a flexible desktop storage setup, but check the RAID details carefully because TerraMaster’s specification and an independent review conflict.
What the D8 Hybrid 2 is—and what it isn’t
The D8 Hybrid 2 is a USB storage enclosure, not a NAS. TerraMaster’s specifications describe a USB 3.2 Type-C Gen 2 connection and no network interface, so it attaches directly to a computer rather than serving storage over a network. You supply the drives separately; the enclosure does not include HDDs or SSDs.

Its combination of bays is unusual: four positions for 3.5-inch SATA HDDs, 2.5-inch SATA HDDs or 2.5-inch SATA SSDs, alongside four M.2 2280 NVMe slots. That gives you the option of using SATA hard drives for bulk storage and SSDs for projects or frequently accessed files. The exact drive models matter, particularly for NVMe compatibility.

Drive options, capacity and compatibility
TerraMaster lists a maximum raw capacity of 160TB, calculated as four 32TB SATA drives plus four 8TB M.2 drives. That is a manufacturer-stated maximum, not a promise of 160TB of usable space: formatted capacity, drive configuration and any redundancy reduce what you can store. Digital Camera World’s July 2026 coverage gives a different maximum of 152TB, so treat capacity claims as configuration- and source-dependent rather than assuming every combination is supported.
#1 Best Overall
- SATA DRIVES ONLY — 2.5in & 3.5in: Works with SATA I/II/III hard drives and SSDs. Does NOT support IDE/PATA, M.2 NVMe, M.2 SATA, SAS, or drives already in a USB enclosure. Check your drive's connector before ordering — a bare SATA drive has a wide flat L-shaped edge connector, not a ribbon cable or a small M.2 gold-finger card.
- USB TYPE-A HOST CABLE — NOT A USB-C PORT: The included host cable ends in USB Type-A and plugs into a USB 3.0 Type-A port. If your computer has only USB-C ports, you will need a USB-C to USB-A adapter, which is not included. For stable operation plug directly into the computer — USB hubs and USB 2.0 ports may cause intermittent disconnections.
- REAL-WORLD SPEED, NOT INTERFACE MATH: USB 3.0 with UASP support (UASP-capable host required). Typical mechanical HDD transfer speeds are 100-160 MB/s, which is the drive's own limit, not the port's; SSD speeds vary up to the USB interface maximum. Backward compatible with USB 2.0 and USB 1.1.
- 12V POWER ADAPTER INCLUDED — REQUIRED FOR 3.5in DRIVES: A 12V/2A AC power adapter is in the box and a wall outlet is needed. 3.5in HDDs cannot run on USB power alone — without the adapter the drive will fail to spin up or drop out during use. 2.5in drives are generally bus-powered, but the adapter is recommended for stability.
- PLUG AND PLAY, TOOL-FREE, HOT-SWAP: No drivers on Windows 10/11, macOS, or Linux. Lay-flat bay accepts a bare drive without tools, swaps without rebooting, and an LED shows power and activity. Note: S.M.A.R.T. diagnostics are not passed through the USB bridge, and on macOS a drive may need remounting after sleep. Drive not included.
Before buying drives, check TerraMaster’s current compatibility list for the precise model and capacity. The list includes recommended NVMe models, with Samsung 980 and 990 PRO entries among them, but compatibility listings can change. A drive’s physical fit or interface alone does not establish that it is on the supported list.

How fast is it in real use?
The enclosure connects to the host over USB 3.2 Gen 2 at 10Gbps. That shared link limits throughput, so an NVMe drive’s advertised standalone speed is not the speed you should expect through the D8 Hybrid 2. Paying extra for a very high sequential-speed NVMe drive solely to maximize transfer rates may not make sense here.

TerraMaster lists maximums of 1,016MB/s read and 960MB/s write with four SSDs, and 980MB/s read and 880MB/s write with one M.2 SSD. It also lists up to 560MB/s read and 520MB/s write with one SATA SSD. These are manufacturer claims for the stated drive configurations, not guaranteed results for every computer, drive or workload.

PCWorld’s September 28, 2026 review described CrystalDiskMark 8 sequential performance as only slightly behind the TerraMaster D1 SSD and Teamgroup Expert P34F, with 4K performance fast but not quite as fast. It characterized 48GB transfer testing and 450GB write performance as good rather than exceptional. The review passage does not provide exact benchmark scores, so those comparisons should not be converted into specific speed promises. Its test setup included NVMe drives plus a SATA HDD and SSD, but the SATA drives were not tested.
Digital Camera World reported separate manufacturer-claim figures of up to 1,020MB/s read with one NVMe SSD and up to 980MB/s with four HDDs, depending on RAID configuration. Those figures are not the same configurations as TerraMaster’s listed maxima and are not reported as independently measured results. See its July 2026 coverage for that account.

- SATA-Only Compatibility: Fits 2.5" and 3.5" SATA HDDs and SSDs. NOT compatible with SAS, M.2 NVMe, M.2 SATA, NVMe PCIe, or IDE/PATA drives. Note: some 4TB+ 3.5" drives with non-standard PCB height may not seat correctly — verify your drive's physical dimensions before purchasing.
- Tool-Free Setup: Slide, click, and go—no tools or screws needed. Swap drives in seconds without hassle.
- USB 3.0 (USB-A) with UASP: USB Type-A host connection — a USB-C to USB-A adapter is required if your computer only has USB-C ports (not included). Transfer speeds up to 625 MB/s theoretical maximum; typical real-world speeds are 100–180 MB/s for HDDs and up to 400–500 MB/s for SSDs.
- External Power Required: Includes 12V/2A AC power adapter — a wall outlet is needed (not bus-powered via USB). Aluminum shell with internal ABS shock-absorbing tray for durability and heat dissipation.
- Plug & Play — Windows 10/11, macOS & Linux: No drivers needed. LED indicates power and activity status. Note: S.M.A.R.T. diagnostics are not accessible through the USB bridge. Hard drive not included.
RAID support is the main unresolved specification issue
TerraMaster’s product specification lists single disk, JBOD, RAID 0 and RAID 1, says array creation is limited to HDD1 and HDD2, and marks hardware RAID as present. PCWorld’s review says the unit has no hardware RAID. These statements conflict, and the available evidence does not establish which description applies to the current product or review unit.
If you need RAID, do not assume that all eight positions can be combined into an array or that the enclosure itself handles RAID in the way you expect. Confirm the mechanism, supported bays and current instructions with TerraMaster before purchase or setup. The manufacturer’s RAID details are in its product specification; the conflicting review is PCWorld’s September 28, 2026 review.

Who should consider it?
- Consider it if you want one directly connected enclosure that can hold both SATA HDDs and SSDs, and you value the option to add NVMe storage without giving up the four SATA positions.
- Consider it with caution if RAID is central to your plan. The published descriptions disagree on hardware RAID, and TerraMaster’s specification limits array creation to HDD1 and HDD2.
- Look elsewhere or reassess the setup if you need network-accessible storage, since this is a USB enclosure, or if your main goal is to exploit the maximum speed of high-end NVMe drives through a faster host connection.
What to check before buying and setting it up
- Choose the drive mix. For bulk capacity, plan around compatible 3.5-inch SATA HDDs; for solid-state storage, the enclosure also accepts 2.5-inch SATA SSDs and M.2 2280 NVMe SSDs.
- Verify exact drive compatibility. Search the TerraMaster compatibility list for each model and capacity, especially for NVMe drives.
- Resolve RAID expectations. Ask TerraMaster to confirm the current RAID mechanism and which bays can participate before buying if you require RAID 0 or RAID 1.
- Budget the complete setup. Add the enclosure cost to the price of every drive you actually need. Do not treat the enclosure’s capacity or performance claims as included storage or guaranteed outcomes.
- Match expectations to the USB link. The 10Gbps interface is shared; choose drives for capacity, compatibility and workload rather than relying on their advertised standalone NVMe speed.
