Termix is the app behind this headline: a free, Apache 2.0-licensed, open-source server-management platform that you host yourself and access through browsers, desktop apps and mobile apps. It is designed as a self-hosted alternative to cloud-centered SSH clients, combining saved hosts and credentials with terminals, file transfer, containers, remote desktops, tunnels and monitoring.
What Termix does
Termix keeps a central inventory of the machines you administer. The core application stores hosts, reusable passwords and SSH keys, then organizes them with folders and tags. Sharing roles, trusted devices, API keys, sessions and an audit log are included for accounts that need more than a personal list of connections.

Secrets are encrypted per user, and the database can be encrypted on disk. That gives an administrator control over where connection data is stored instead of placing the entire inventory in a vendor-operated cloud. It does not, however, eliminate the responsibility to secure the server running Termix, protect backups and restrict administrative access.
Termix’s maintainers describe it as “a free, open source, self-hosted server management platform built on plugins.” They also say it “runs on web, desktop and mobile” and is intended as “a free, self-hosted Termius.”

How the cross-device setup works
You deploy one Termix server, then sign in from the clients you use. The web interface works in modern browsers. Distributions are listed for Windows, Linux, macOS, iOS/iPadOS and Android, so the same account can be used from a workstation, phone or tablet.
The desktop application can link to a Termix server and retain an offline copy of the account. That documented desktop-sync feature is the bridge between central management and access when the desktop is temporarily disconnected. The server remains the authority for synchronization; an offline copy should be treated as sensitive data and protected like the online account.

What you can manage beyond SSH
Termix’s functionality is delivered through plugins. The available categories make it closer to a small operations console than a standalone terminal emulator.
| Plugin or category | What it adds |
|---|---|
| SSH | Interactive terminal sessions to saved hosts. |
| SFTP | File browsing and transfers on systems reached through SSH. |
| Docker and Podman | Container administration from the same account. |
| RDP, VNC and Telnet | Remote-desktop and legacy terminal protocols alongside SSH. |
| Tunnels | Port-forwarding and tunnel workflows for reaching services securely. |
| Metrics and automations | Monitoring views and repeatable operational tasks. |
| Session recording and sharing | Ways to capture or share connection activity when team processes require it. |
| Proxmox | Management tools for Proxmox environments. |
| Passkeys and TOTP | Optional account-security methods beyond a password. |
Plugin availability and behavior can change as the project releases updates, so check the version you plan to deploy before depending on a specific protocol or integration.

Deploying Termix with Docker Compose
Self-hosting is the main trade-off. You need a machine that can run Docker, persistent storage for the Termix data and a network path from your clients to that machine. A home server, office host or VPS can fill that role; the project documentation does not establish a hosted subscription, uptime SLA or managed support commitment.
- Install Docker Engine and the Docker Compose plugin on the host you will keep online.
- Create a Compose project using the image
ghcr.io/termix-ssh/termix:latest. - Publish the application on port
8080, and attach the persistent named volumetermix-dataas shown in the project’s current Compose example. The volume is essential: without persistent storage, recreating the container can remove the account database and configuration. - Start the project with
docker compose up -d. - Open the host’s port 8080 in a browser, create the initial account and configure the connection inventory.
- Install the desktop or mobile distribution, or use a modern browser, and link each client to the Termix server. On desktop, enable the documented server link so the application can keep its offline account copy.
Use the repository’s current Compose file rather than copying an old example: image tags, internal paths and required environment settings can change between releases. Back up the named volume and test a restore before placing production credentials in the system.

Security and administration details
- Credential handling: saved passwords and keys are managed in the core account system, with secrets encrypted per user.
- At-rest protection: the database can be encrypted on disk, which helps if the storage device or backup is exposed.
- Device control: trusted-device features and account-security plugins, including Passkeys and TOTP, can reduce dependence on a single password.
- Accountability: roles, session records and an audit log provide controls for shared environments.
- Operational responsibility: you still administer the host, Docker installation, network exposure, backups, updates and recovery process.
The project materials do not establish a complete independent security audit. Treat the encryption and access controls as documented capabilities, not as a guarantee that every deployment is secure by default.
Who should choose it
Good fit
- Administrators who want one inventory across a laptop, phone and tablet.
- Teams that need SSH plus SFTP, containers, remote desktops or tunnels in one interface.
- People who prefer Apache 2.0 open-source software and control over the hosting location.
- Users comfortable maintaining Docker, storage and account security.
Possible drawbacks
- A self-hosted server adds deployment and maintenance work that a vendor cloud service hides.
- Remote access depends on the availability and network configuration of your Termix host.
- Offline desktop data broadens the number of places where credentials must be protected.
- The materials do not prove one-to-one migration from any particular Termius plan, nor do they provide a current pricing comparison.
Termix versus a conventional cloud SSH client
| Decision point | Termix’s documented position | What you must evaluate |
|---|---|---|
| Hosting | You run the server yourself with Docker Compose. | Host availability, updates, backups and network access. |
| Platforms | Web, Windows, Linux, macOS, iOS/iPadOS and Android distributions are listed. | Whether your required client and plugin are available in the release you install. |
| Synchronization | Central account management, with a documented offline account copy for the desktop app. | How your organization handles offline storage and conflict recovery. |
| Protocol coverage | SSH, SFTP, Docker, Podman, RDP, VNC, Telnet, tunnels and additional plugins. | Which integrations you actually need and how mature they are for your version. |
| Team controls | Roles, sharing, trusted devices, API keys and audit logging. | Your required approval, logging and access-review process. |
| Cost | The software is free and open source. | Compute, storage, bandwidth and your own maintenance time; no specific dollar saving is established. |
What to check before moving your server list
- Confirm that your phone, desktop operating system and browser are supported by the release you intend to run.
- Inventory every protocol and workflow you use, then verify the corresponding Termix plugin is available.
- Plan the host, persistent storage, backups and a recovery test before importing credentials.
- Decide whether offline desktop copies are acceptable for your threat model and device-management policy.
- Test a noncritical host first, including SSH, file transfer, container and remote-desktop workflows where relevant.
- Only then migrate the rest of your inventory and assign team roles.
Termix is therefore best understood as a self-hosted control plane for remote systems, not merely a free terminal. It can replace several separate tools for the right operator, provided that the convenience of one cross-device account is worth owning the deployment and security work.
