Choose a pair that fits securely and feels comfortable; the available guidance does not identify a single best shoe or establish that tennis court shoes perform best on an elliptical.
First, what do you mean by “tennis shoes”?
People often use “tennis shoes” to mean athletic sneakers in general. Tennis or court shoes, however, are made for court movement, including lateral steps and quick changes of direction. That is a different purpose from a cross-training shoe, which is intended to cover several kinds of exercise.

The distinction matters because there is no direct comparison here showing that court shoes are better or worse on elliptical machines. A court shoe’s design for lateral movement is not, by itself, evidence that it is the right choice for steady elliptical workouts.

Choose by your workout mix
Elliptical plus other gym activities
If your week includes several types of exercise, a cross-trainer is a practical general option. The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons says, “If you are active in many different forms of exercise each week, a cross-training shoe may be the best choice.” The Missouri Podiatric Medical Association also describes cross-trainers as general footwear for health-club exercise, with more lateral support and less flexibility than running shoes.

Mostly elliptical workouts
The available guidance does not establish a special shoe category or model as best for elliptical use alone. Focus on a comfortable fit and the support you need rather than choosing a court shoe simply because “tennis shoes” appears in a search or product description.
Court sports in your routine
If you also play tennis or another court sport, a court shoe may suit that activity’s lateral movement and direction changes. That does not establish that it is the best choice for your elliptical sessions; consider whether one pair needs to serve both purposes or whether your activities call for different footwear.

Check fit and comfort before choosing
FootCareMD recommends trying shoes later in the day or after exercise, wearing the socks you normally use for the activity, allowing room for toe movement, and checking that the heel feels secure. These are useful checks when comparing cross-trainers, court shoes, or other athletic sneakers.
- Try the shoes with your usual workout socks.
- Make sure your toes have room to move.
- Check that the heel stays secure rather than slipping.
- Pay attention to comfort while standing and moving; a shoe category alone cannot guarantee a good fit.
Account for individual support needs
Support needs vary. The Arthritis Foundation notes that sneakers with strong arch support or an orthotic insert can help keep hips and knees aligned on the elliptical when pain or stiffness affects gait and posture. This is conditional guidance, not a universal prescription or a guarantee that a particular shoe will correct alignment.

These sources offer general footwear and fit guidance; they do not test shoe models on elliptical machines, directly compare tennis court shoes with cross-trainers on an elliptical, or rank a best brand. The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons’ figure of three to five times a person’s body weight refers to impact forces from running and jumping, not to elliptical exercise, so it should not be used to infer which shoe performs best on an elliptical.
