What Tenebris Somnia is
Tenebris Somnia is a 2D retro survival-horror adventure from Andrés Borghi and Saibot Studios, published by New Blood Interactive. Steam lists its Windows release for October 16, 2026. It borrows the exploration, item management, puzzles and creature encounters associated with classic Resident Evil and Silent Hill, then translates that structure into an 8-bit/16-bit-inspired presentation.

The defining idea is its hybrid format. Most of the game is played as a pixel-art adventure, but pivotal story moments switch to live-action footage made with actors and practical effects by an award-winning Argentine film crew. Story, setting and tone
You play Julia, whose recurring nightmares show her former boyfriend Ivan dying. She visits his apartment to investigate, only to find it damaged and sealed with occult signs. What begins as a search through a familiar domestic space expands into a hellish or parallel dimension governed by its own spiritual logic.

The mythology centers on possession, soul sacrifices and spiritual domains. The emotional tension between Julia and Ivan gives the demonology a personal stake, while the shift from ordinary rooms to warped occult spaces supplies the game’s strongest visual contrast. Shacknews called the result “a haunting horror story dripping with the occult,” and Saving Content likewise highlighted the story’s emotional weight and demonology.
How the gameplay works
Exploration and puzzles
Tenebris Somnia follows a classic adventure-game rhythm: search rooms, collect objects, combine items, interpret environmental clues and return to previously visited areas when a new possibility opens. Progress often depends on multi-step objectives rather than a single obvious key. Taking notes and inspecting surroundings carefully are useful habits.
The puzzles reward observation more than reflexes. Environmental details help point you toward the next location, but larger solutions can require backtracking. Saving Content found some returns to earlier areas chore-like, although those clues generally prevent the game from becoming directionless.

Combat and resources
Fights are intentionally resource constrained, but the controls are the least polished part of the experience. Shacknews reports slow default movement, snags on environmental geometry, stationary attacks and weapon delays that make timing important. Saving Content also notes awkward reload behavior and occasional one-hit deaths.
That friction changes how you approach encounters: ammunition and healing are not invitations to fight everything, and committing to an attack or reload can leave Julia exposed. Players seeking modern, responsive action-horror combat should lower their expectations; players who enjoy deliberate, sometimes uncomfortable retro mechanics may find the tension appropriate.
Live-action FMV: the game’s central gamble
The live-action scenes are concentrated at important narrative beats, so they are not constantly interrupting exploration. When they arrive, the practical effects, actors and high-bit-rate footage create a sharp contrast with the pixel-art world. Saving Content said the FMV transitions smoothly and feels cohesive with the gameplay immediately before it.

This structure also affects pacing. Between cinematic payoffs, you may spend extended stretches moving through rougher exploration, puzzle solving and combat. The payoff is unusual: the game can move from a deliberately limited 2D scene into a tactile, film-like horror image without abandoning its underlying mythology.

Normal spaces use bold, natural colors, while the occult dimension twists geometry and palette. That contrast makes the supernatural sections feel like a violation of the apartment and its surrounding reality rather than merely darker versions of the same rooms.
The retro look is not only nostalgic packaging. Its limits support the game’s mystery by making you interpret silhouettes, room layouts and environmental details. The live-action footage then supplies physical texture—actors, makeup and practical effects—that pixel art intentionally withholds.

How long is Tenebris Somnia?
Reviewers report a first completion between approximately six and eight hours. Shacknews recorded about six hours, while Saving Content reached the credits in just over eight hours. Treat that as a review-based range, not a guaranteed timer: puzzle-solving speed, deaths, backtracking and exploration will change the result. Saving Content also reports multiple endings, giving the short campaign some replay value.

Saving Content lists a $24.99 retail price in its 2026 coverage. Prices and regional currency conversions can vary by storefront, so check the current Steam listing before buying.
The positive assessments here are review judgments, not laboratory performance tests. Saving Content disclosed that its Steam code was provided by the publisher. Its reviewer praised the cinematics, smart puzzles and gripping story while acknowledging clunky combat. Shacknews similarly praised the occult narrative and atmosphere but identified control and traversal frustrations.
Is Tenebris Somnia like Resident Evil or Silent Hill?
It is closer to their classic adventure-horror structure than to their modern action descendants. Like those games, it uses constrained resources, environmental investigation, locked-area progression and creatures that make movement through familiar spaces threatening. Unlike them, it presents the action in 2D pixel art and uses live-action film for major story moments.

Verdict: should you play it?
Play Tenebris Somnia if your priority is atmosphere, occult storytelling, puzzle solving and an unusual visual format. The live-action sequences are the clear differentiator, and the mythology gives the short campaign momentum. Approach it as a retro adventure with horror-film interludes, not as a precision combat game.
Skip it if slow movement, stationary attacks, reload commitments or backtracking quickly exhaust your patience. Those weaknesses are repeatedly noted in reviews and can dominate the quieter stretches between cinematics. For the right player, however, the six-to-eight-hour length, multiple endings and distinctive FMV presentation make Tenebris Somnia a focused horror experience rather than a padded one.
