Tenda ME6 Pro Review: This Budget Wi-Fi 7 Mesh Delivers Just the Basics

The Tenda ME6 Pro is a budget Wi-Fi 7 mesh kit that covers the basics well if you can run a cable to each node. It is dual-band, not tri-band, so any node that connects wirelessly to the network shares its 5GHz capacity with the devices it serves. That trade-off drives most of what you should expect from it, and WIRED’s 2026 mesh guide reports that wired backhaul is needed for good speeds from the satellite nodes. If you cannot wire the nodes, this is the wrong kit to buy at this price.

What the BE5100 label and the 5011 Mbps figure actually mean

Tenda markets the ME6 Pro as a BE5100 whole-home Wi-Fi 7 mesh system. The U.S. product page advertises a “dual-band concurrent rate up to 5011Mbps” and says Wi-Fi 7 Multi-Link Operation (MLO) can transmit on both bands at once when the client device also supports Wi-Fi 7. The figure is an aggregate advertised rate across the two bands. It is not the speed one device will see, it is not an internet throughput guarantee, and it is not an independent test result.

Tenda says its close-range comparison used a Wi-Fi 7 phone with MLO enabled over a 2000 Mbps broadband connection, and that its data comes from Tenda Labs. The company itself adds that actual speeds vary with devices and environment. Its through-wall comparisons carry their own stated test conditions, which you should read on the product page before relying on them. None of these numbers is an independent measurement of the ME6 Pro in a typical home.

Dual-band means the backhaul question decides the outcome

The ME6 Pro’s radios cover 2.4GHz and 5GHz. It has no 6GHz band, which WIRED also notes. Many buyers read “BE5100” and assume a tri-band design, so compare it by band count and backhaul method, not by the label. The table below shows how the two backhaul options differ for this kit.

Backhaul arrangement How the ME6 Pro handles it What WIRED reports What to check before buying
Ethernet cable from each node to the network Node-to-node traffic does not consume the wireless 5GHz band, so the nodes can serve clients on it Wired backhaul is needed to get good speeds from satellite nodes Whether you can run a cable to every node and whether the 2.5GbE or Gigabit port fits your layout
Wireless node-to-node link Node-to-node traffic and client devices share the same 5GHz capacity Performance can be worse than a similarly priced tri-band Wi-Fi 6 system when wireless backhaul is necessary Whether a tri-band system at a similar price would serve the rooms that a wired link cannot reach

In short, the ME6 Pro is a reasonable match for a home where wiring the nodes is practical. Where wiring is not practical, WIRED’s guidance points to tri-band alternatives as the better comparison.

Ethernet ports and the 2.5GbE setting

Each node has one 2.5GbE port and two Gigabit Ethernet ports, according to Tenda’s support page for the 3-pack. The 2.5GbE port is the most useful of the three for a wired backhaul link, because it gives that link headroom above Gigabit. The product page states that the 2.5G port is used as the WAN port by default and can be changed to a LAN port through the configuration page.

  1. Connect a computer to the node’s management interface and open the configuration page described in Tenda’s ME6 Pro support material.
  2. Find the setting that controls the 2.5G Ethernet port role and change it from WAN to LAN.
  3. Save the change, then test a wired device on that port before you rely on it.

Confirm the exact menu labels on your firmware, because the support material describes the setting in general terms and the labels can change between releases.

Hardware details that matter less than the marketing suggests

Tenda’s specifications list five internal 3dBi antennas, a dual-core 1GHz CPU, and 512MB of RAM per node. These numbers tell you what the hardware is, not how well it performs. A dual-core 1GHz processor with 512MB of RAM is a modest platform, which fits the price and the “just the basics” verdict. The antennas and the coverage claims should be read as vendor specifications until you test them in your own home.

Performance and reliability: what WIRED observed

WIRED places the ME6 Pro in its “Mesh Systems I Don’t Recommend” section of its 2026 mesh guide. The reviewer describes it as affordable and easy to set up, and reports decent speeds and range from the main router. The reviewer also describes patchy connectivity that sometimes dropped without an obvious cause. These are qualitative observations from one reviewer, not a measured failure rate, and they should be attributed to WIRED rather than treated as a finding of ours.

  • BACKWARD COMPATIBLE - eero 7 is backward compatible with all previous generations of eero and compatible with eero Built-in on select Amazon Echo devices.

The reviewer’s experience matches the backhaul trade-off above: satellite-node speeds were poor enough that wired backhaul was needed. Expect results to depend heavily on your layout, your client devices, and whether they support Wi-Fi 7 and MLO.

Security concerns to check before buying

WIRED also raises concerns about unpatched vulnerabilities in Tenda firmware and links to separate reporting on the subject. We have not verified specific vulnerability identifiers, the ME6 Pro firmware versions they affect, or whether a fix has been released. Read WIRED’s linked reporting directly, check Tenda’s support page for current firmware, and confirm the firmware version on your unit before you connect it to a network that holds sensitive devices.

Features and what they include

Tenda lists MLO, 4K-QAM, OFDMA, beamforming, MU-MIMO, WPA2 and WPA3 support, mesh roaming, app and web management, parental controls, IPv6, IPTV, and VPN protocols including OpenVPN, WireGuard, PPTP, and L2TP. The product page names NordVPN and Surfshark as examples of VPN providers compatible with those protocols. That describes protocol compatibility only. It does not mean either provider endorses the router or is bundled with it.

The page also describes NFC-based guest connection and automatic node discovery. These features cover basic setup and guest access. Claims about wider coverage, better wall penetration, seamless switching between nodes, or speed gains should be treated as vendor claims unless an independent test confirms them.

Price and warranty

We did not establish a current street price, regional availability, or warranty terms for the ME6 Pro. WIRED’s guide lists alternatives and manufacturer’s suggested prices, but a list price is not a current sale price. Check the retailer and Tenda’s official warranty terms in your region before you buy.

Who should buy the ME6 Pro

  • Good fit: you can run an Ethernet cable to each node, you want Wi-Fi 7 and a 2.5GbE port at a low price, and your needs are basic app control, parental controls, and standard VPN use.
  • Weak fit: the nodes must connect wirelessly, because the shared 5GHz band is the main limit WIRED identifies.
  • Compare first: tri-band systems, especially if your layout forces wireless backhaul or if you expect demanding wireless performance on every node.
  • Check first: firmware status and the security concerns WIRED raises, before you deploy the kit on a network that holds sensitive devices.
