That measures where outstanding contract exposure was concentrated—not which way traders were positioned or whether a liquidation cascade was imminent. Separately, on a venue that uses cross margin, losses in one eligible position can reduce collateral available to support others in the same account.
What Talos’s 62% figure measures
Talos published the figure on October 1, 2026, for the week of September 24–30. It says the top ten altcoins by open interest carried 62% of total altcoin open interest, naming SOL, XRP, HYPE and ZEC among the largest markets in that group. The report text does not enumerate all ten tokens.

Open interest is the number or value of futures contracts that remain open rather than having been offset or settled, subject to the contract and data conventions used by the venue or data provider. CME explains that each open contract has both a buyer and a seller, but only one side is counted in open interest. The measure therefore does not mean that 62% of traders were long, nor does it identify a net bullish or bearish position. CME: Volume and Open Interest Columns Explained.

Talos interprets the concentration as risk being contained to a handful of runners. That is its reading of the aggregate distribution, not a finding about individual traders’ accounts. Open interest does not reveal account collateral, leverage, liquidation thresholds or available order-book depth.

How to read the 5.6% open-interest-to-market-cap ratio
Talos also reported altcoin open interest at 5.6% of market capitalization, describing that as a record in its own series. The ratio compares outstanding-contract exposure with a token-value measure; it is not a direct reading of leverage on every token, exchange or account.
The interpretation depends on which tokens and contracts are included, the observation timing and how market capitalization is defined. Talos’s report does not fully specify its denominator conventions, so its 5.6% should not be treated as directly interchangeable with another provider’s ratio. It also cannot establish how much collateral any particular trader has posted.

Funding is a payment, not a direction-of-price forecast
Perpetual futures use funding payments to help keep contract prices near the underlying asset. Hyperliquid describes funding as a periodic payment from one side of a contract to the other: on that venue, positive funding means longs pay shorts, while negative funding means shorts pay longs. Hyperliquid settles hourly and divides its formula’s eight-hour rate into hourly payments; other venues can use different formulas, intervals and limits. Hyperliquid: Funding.

Talos’s September 24–30 snapshot reported PUMP funding at +21.8% annualized and SOL funding below zero. These are dated observations, not current rates or guaranteed borrowing costs. Annualizing a funding rate does not mean that rate will persist for a year.

A later, separate example shows why direction must be tied to a timestamp. CryptoSlate reported Binance PUMPUSDT funding settlements of −0.001748% at 00:00 UTC and +0.001227% at 04:00 UTC on October 5, 2026, with the paying side reversing. Those are contract-level observations reported by CryptoSlate, not an update to Talos’s weekly aggregate. CryptoSlate: Binance PUMPUSDT funding example.
How one position can affect another under cross margin
Margin mode determines how collateral is allocated within an account; it is distinct from the market-wide distribution of open interest. Hyperliquid documents cross margin as sharing collateral among eligible cross-margin positions. If one position loses value, account value can fall, leaving less collateral to support the other positions covered by that cross-margin pool. Under Hyperliquid’s stated rules, cross positions are subject to liquidation when account value falls below the maintenance-margin condition. Hyperliquid: Margining.
Cross margin
Collateral is shared across eligible positions in the relevant account mode. A loss in one position can therefore contribute to the account-level margin shortfall that puts other cross positions at risk. The scope depends on the venue’s rules and the account’s configuration; “cross” does not automatically mean that every asset or position across every account is pooled.

Isolated margin
Hyperliquid’s documentation says isolated margin constrains collateral to an asset; isolated calculations use that position’s margin and notional rather than the cross-account pool. This can limit direct collateral spillover between positions, but it does not make the isolated position immune to liquidation if its own margin becomes insufficient.
Best Value
These are Hyperliquid-specific mechanics, not universal rules for every futures platform. Before drawing conclusions about spillover, check the venue’s current margin documentation and the actual account mode.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the concentration figure cannot tell you about liquidation risk
The 62% share describes how aggregate open interest was distributed among altcoin markets in Talos’s stated week. It does not show whether a given account uses cross or isolated margin, how close its positions are to maintenance requirements, or whether the market can absorb forced orders without large price moves. Concentrated open interest alone proves neither that risk is contained to those ten markets nor that a cascade will happen.
A more useful assessment would require evidence aligned across several dimensions:
- Comparable market data: the same tokens, contracts, venues, inclusion rules and observation window; distinguish open interest from trading volume and contract count from dollar-valued exposure.
- Account conditions: collateral, leverage, margin mode, maintenance requirements and liquidation distances for the positions in question.
- Market liquidity: available depth and likely execution conditions where positions might need to be closed.
- Ratio methodology: the constituent set, timestamp and market-capitalization convention before comparing open-interest-to-market-cap ratios across providers.
Without those details, the report is evidence of concentration in a dated aggregate—not a map of which account would fail first or how losses would propagate.
