Temple wearable vs. smart glasses: what’s the difference?

Temple and smart glasses are different device categories. Temple is a temple-worn wellness sensor that produces a proprietary, relative “BrainFlow” or “Flow” index related to cerebral hemodynamics. Smart glasses are eyewear with electronics that may provide a lens display, audio, cameras, microphones, or some combination. Choose between them by intended use and evidence—not by the fact that both sit on your head.

Temple and smart glasses at a glance

Question Temple wearable Smart glasses
Primary purpose A wellness signal that Temple describes as a proxy related to cerebral blood flow. Model-dependent functions such as displaying information, playing audio, making calls, or capturing images.
Where it is worn On the anterior temporal region, near the temple. As eyewear, with electronics in the frame, lenses, or temple arms.
Main output A proprietary, dimensionless BrainFlow index normalized to a user’s baseline. Visual information, sound, captured media, or controls, depending on the model.
Medical status Temple’s Terms of Use say the device is not a medical device and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent illness. No single medical or regulatory status applies to the entire smart-glasses category; evaluate the specific product.
Display Not the product’s stated purpose. Some models have an in-lens display; others are audio-focused and do not make a display their defining feature.
Camera and microphones Not identified as the device’s purpose in the available product description. Some models include cameras and microphones. Capture indicators and controls vary by model.
Availability Temple’s site currently invites visitors to register for early access rather than presenting the device as generally available for purchase. Availability and specifications depend on the individual model and region.

What the Temple wearable is designed to do

A sensor worn at the temple

In this comparison, “Temple” means the branded device from Temple Private Limited, not the temple arms or side pieces of ordinary glasses. A 2026 medRxiv preprint describes the device as being worn on the anterior temporal region. Its sensor uses multi-wavelength reflectance photoplethysmography (PPG), with green, red, and infrared light, to collect an optical signal at the temple.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

The device reports that signal as “Flow” or “BrainFlow.” The output is a proprietary, dimensionless index normalized to each participant’s baseline. That makes it a relative signal: a change from a person’s own reference level, rather than a universal blood-flow value that can be compared directly between people.

Why “proxy” matters

Temple describes BrainFlow as a proxy for cerebral blood flow. “Proxy” means the device uses an indirectly related signal and an algorithmic index; it does not mean the wearable directly measures cerebral blood flow in the same way as a clinical instrument. Temple’s own terms also state that its information is not intended to match professional medical or scientific measurement devices.

For a consumer, the practical interpretation is straightforward: BrainFlow may help visualize relative changes under the conditions for which it was developed, but it should not be treated as a clinical reading, a diagnosis, or a replacement for medical assessment.

What the published study actually tested

The 2026 medRxiv preprint enrolled 23 healthy adults and analyzed 20 participants per protocol. The investigators compared the wearable’s index with transcranial Doppler measurements during exercise and a postural transition. Those details define the evidence: a specific protocol, a healthy-adult sample, and comparison tasks involving changes in activity and posture.

  • The sample was healthy adults, not a broad population with neurological, cardiovascular, or other medical conditions.
  • The paper is a medRxiv preprint, so its findings should be read as preliminary rather than as established diagnostic performance.
  • The protocol examined agreement under defined test conditions; it did not establish accuracy for every everyday situation, user, or illness.

Temple’s research page separately summarizes a comparison with depth-resolved time-domain near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS), reporting a correlation range of r=0.84–0.91 under that study’s conditions. The same page reports approximately 0.8 within-person correlation in a separate comparison with transcranial Doppler. These are company-reported summaries of defined studies, not guarantees that every user will see those correlations in normal daily use.

Medical and wellness boundaries

Temple’s Terms of Use, dated 26 August 2025, state: “The Temple Device and Services are not medical devices and are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any medical condition or illness.” That statement controls how the product should be discussed and used.

If you have symptoms, a diagnosed condition, or a treatment decision to make, a BrainFlow trend cannot substitute for a clinician’s evaluation or a validated medical test. A change in an app index may reflect physiology, sensor placement, movement, or other factors; it is not, by itself, evidence that a disease is present or absent.

Availability is still an important distinction

Temple’s current homepage promotes early-access registration. That is different from an established retail product with confirmed inventory, shipping, regional support, and a finalized consumer specification. Before committing money or relying on a feature, check Temple’s current product page and terms for the latest availability and capabilities.

What “smart glasses” can mean

A category, not one fixed specification

Smart glasses are glasses with embedded electronics, but the label does not identify one standard hardware package. One model may be built around an in-lens display; another may focus on open-ear audio and controls in the temple; another may add cameras, microphones, or hands-free calling. The name alone does not tell you what the glasses sense, show, record, or require.

Display-oriented glasses

The official listing for Ray-Ban Meta Display describes a display integrated into one lens, along with a camera, microphones, and open-ear speakers. That is an example of smart glasses functioning as a visual interface as well as an audio and capture device. A display model may be intended to present information in your field of view, but the exact content, controls, compatibility, and regional availability are product-specific questions.

Audio-focused glasses

Xiaomi’s Mijia Smart Audio Glasses page illustrates the other side of the category. It emphasizes audio functionality and controls on the temple. In this type of product, the glasses can deliver sound while looking like conventional eyewear; a visual display is not what defines the experience.

Therefore, the answer to “Do smart glasses have a display?” is: some do, and some do not. Read the model’s specification rather than assuming that every pair projects text or images into a lens.

Cameras, microphones, and privacy signals

Camera-equipped glasses create a privacy question that a passive wellness sensor does not raise in the same way. Meta says its AI glasses use a capture LED to signal when content is being captured. That is a product-specific privacy feature, not a universal standard for all smart glasses. Other models can use different indicators, controls, or policies.

Before using camera-equipped eyewear around other people, verify when recording is active, how the indicator works, where media is stored, which account receives it, and how to disable capture. The available information does not establish a complete, like-for-like comparison of Temple’s data practices with every smart-glasses maker’s policy, so review the current policy for the exact device you are considering.

The important differences, category by category

Decision axis Temple Smart glasses What the difference means
Intended job Track a proprietary wellness index related to cerebral hemodynamics. Provide an interface or utility such as display, audio, capture, or calls. They solve different problems and are not interchangeable substitutes.
Signal or content Relative BrainFlow value normalized to an individual baseline. Information, sound, photos, video, or controls, depending on model. Temple is primarily a sensing-and-trending product; smart glasses are primarily an interaction product.
Sensor approach Multi-wavelength reflectance PPG at the anterior temporal region. Hardware varies; examples include cameras, microphones, speakers, displays, and touch or physical controls. Do not infer a smart-glasses model’s sensors from another model’s specification.
Evidence Study-specific comparisons with transcranial Doppler and company-reported NIRS and Doppler summaries. Evaluate the published specifications and privacy documentation for the exact model. Correlation figures from Temple’s studies do not become universal accuracy claims, and category-level claims do not replace model documentation.
Visual display Not the stated purpose. Present on some models, absent or non-defining on others. Choose “display glasses” only when a display is explicitly listed.
Audio Not identified as the core output. Common on audio-oriented models and also included on some display models. Open-ear speakers can be the main reason to buy a particular pair.
Capture Not described as a camera product. Some models include cameras and microphones. Check recording indicators, controls, storage, and policy before use in shared spaces.
Fit Designed around contact at the temporal region. Designed as eyewear, with frame and temple-arm fit affecting comfort and electronics placement. Fit requirements are different even though both devices sit near the head.
Availability Early-access registration is currently promoted. Depends on model, market, and retailer or manufacturer availability. Confirm current status rather than assuming either category is universally in stock.

Which one fits your goal?

Choose a Temple-style device when your goal is physiological trending

A Temple wearable makes sense only if you specifically want a relative wellness signal associated with cerebral hemodynamics and understand its limits. The relevant question is not “Is it a medical blood-flow monitor?”—Temple says it is not—but whether its baseline-normalized index is useful to you as a personal wellness reference.

  • Use the product for observation and trend awareness, not diagnosis.
  • Interpret readings in the context of the device’s placement and the conditions under which you collect them.
  • Keep the study population in mind: the cited preprint involved healthy adults, with 23 enrolled and 20 analyzed per protocol.
  • Do not convert a study correlation into a promise of clinical accuracy or identical performance for every person.

Choose smart glasses when your goal is hands-free information or communication

Smart glasses are the more relevant category when you want audio, a camera, microphones, or information presented through an optical display. Start with the function, not the marketing label:

  • For visual overlays: select a model whose official specification explicitly lists an in-lens display.
  • For listening: an audio-focused model may be more appropriate than display hardware you will not use.
  • For capture and calls: verify camera and microphone behavior, recording indicators, and the associated privacy policy.
  • For ordinary-looking eyewear with electronics: inspect the frame, temple-arm controls, and how the product signals active functions.

Do not buy one expecting the other’s output

Nothing in the available product descriptions indicates that smart glasses measure Temple’s BrainFlow signal, and Temple is not presented as a display, audio, or camera platform. A pair of smart glasses may sit over the temple, but physical proximity does not make it a cerebral-blood-flow sensor. Conversely, a temple sensor does not become smart glasses merely because it is worn on the head.

How to compare a specific model before buying

  1. Write down the job you need done. Separate physiological trending from display, audio, communication, and capture. If you have more than one goal, rank them instead of assuming one device will cover all of them.
  2. Read the exact hardware list. Confirm whether the product has an in-lens display, speakers, microphones, cameras, and physical or touch controls. “Smart” is not a specification.
  3. Check the evidence behind health language. For Temple, distinguish the proprietary BrainFlow index from direct clinical measurement and note the healthy-adult, study-specific nature of the cited comparisons.
  4. Check privacy behavior. For camera-equipped glasses, identify the capture indicator, how recording starts and stops, where files go, and what the manufacturer’s current policy says.
  5. Confirm availability and region. Temple currently points visitors toward early access. Smart-glasses features and availability can vary by market and model.
  6. Assess fit for the actual wear location. A temporal sensor needs appropriate contact at the temple; eyewear needs a comfortable frame and stable temple arms. Comfort and placement are separate requirements.
  7. Set a non-medical expectation for Temple. Treat the index as a wellness reference. Do not use it to make treatment decisions or to rule out a medical problem.

Common misconceptions and how to avoid them

“Temple” means the side of any glasses

In eyewear terminology, a temple is a side arm. In this article, Temple is the name of a branded wearable from Temple Private Limited. Confusing the two leads to the mistaken idea that ordinary glasses—or any smart glasses—measure the same signal.

“A high correlation means medical-grade accuracy”

Correlation describes how two measurements move together under a particular study design; it does not by itself establish diagnostic sensitivity, specificity, interchangeability, or performance across diseases and populations. The reported r=0.84–0.91 NIRS range and approximately 0.8 within-person Doppler correlation must be read with their study conditions and source attached.

“All smart glasses show information in front of your eyes”

The Mijia Smart Audio Glasses example shows why that assumption fails: audio and temple controls can be the central feature. A display is present only when the specific product lists one, such as the display described for Ray-Ban Meta Display.

“A recording light makes every camera-glasses privacy issue solved”

A capture LED can help people recognize active recording, but Meta’s description applies to its AI glasses. It is not proof that every camera-equipped model uses the same signal or policy. Treat the indicator as one control to understand, not as a category-wide guarantee.

Temple Terms of Use dated 26 August 2025. The company states the device is not a medical device and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent illness. That the device can be used to make medical decisions.
Official smart-glasses product pages. Specific examples demonstrate that displays, audio, cameras, microphones, and controls vary by model. That every product marketed as smart glasses has the same feature set.

Bottom line

Temple is a temple-worn wellness sensor that turns an optical signal into a proprietary, baseline-relative BrainFlow index; it is not a medical device or a direct clinical cerebral-blood-flow meter. Smart glasses are eyewear platforms whose capabilities depend on the model: some add an in-lens display, some concentrate on open-ear audio, and some include cameras and microphones. If you want a physiological trend, evaluate Temple’s evidence and limits. If you want hands-free visual information, sound, communication, or capture, compare the exact smart-glasses specification and privacy controls. The two categories overlap in where they are worn, not in what they are designed to measure or do.
