Telnet and SSH are remote-access protocols; 8080 is only a port number. A connection using port 8080 could carry HTTP, another application protocol, or something configured specifically for that device. The port alone cannot identify the service or show whether its contents are readable.
What’s the difference between Telnet and SSH?
Telnet and SSH are application-level protocols used for terminal-oriented communication and remote access. They are not port numbers, even though each has a conventional port associated with it.
| Item | What it is | Typical port evidence | Security and interpretation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Telnet | A terminal-oriented communications protocol carried over TCP. | TCP port 23 is assigned for remote user access by RFC 854. | The specification describes the communication protocol, not a cryptographic confidentiality layer. A service can be configured to use a different port, and other network protections may affect exposure. |
| SSH | A protocol suite for secure remote login and other network services, typically running over TCP/IP. | TCP port 22 is the normal listening port, but SSH can be configured to listen elsewhere. | SSH provides encryption, server authentication, and integrity protection. Its architecture separates transport security, user authentication, and connection channels. |
| Port 8080 | A transport port number, not an application protocol. | It is used by some services; for example, an EnOS IoT service mapping documents HTTP on 8080 and HTTPS on 443. | The mapping is specific to that service. Port 8080 does not by itself establish what protocol or content a connection uses. |
What does “payload” mean in a network connection?
Payload is relative to the protocol layer being discussed. IP carries a transport segment; TCP carries application bytes; an application protocol such as Telnet, SSH, or HTTP gives those bytes meaning. The port is part of TCP or UDP header information used to direct traffic to a service. It is not a place where data is stored, nor an encryption mechanism.
SSH’s name includes “Transport Layer Protocol,” but that does not mean SSH replaces TCP as the Internet transport. SSH normally operates above TCP/IP. Within SSH, once encryption is active, SSH packet payloads are protected; an observer may still see connection metadata such as addresses and ports without being able to read the protected contents. See RFC 4253 and the SSH architecture in RFC 4251.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Can someone read what is sent over port 8080?
The port number cannot answer that. If the service is using plaintext HTTP, application contents are not protected by HTTP encryption. If it is using HTTPS or another correctly configured security layer, the application contents are encrypted in transit. The port does not tell you which case applies: confirm the protocol and its security configuration.
For example, AWS documents TLS requirements and protocol/port combinations for its own IoT device gateway; those service-specific details should not be treated as a general map for other devices. Its guidance is available in the AWS IoT protocols documentation and AWS IoT transport security documentation.

How to identify the service on a device
Use the device’s actual configuration and protocol evidence rather than guessing from a familiar port number. The following sequence helps locate the relevant layer:
- Identify the device and interface. Note the device, firmware or configuration where available, and whether you are investigating an incoming service or an outbound connection.
- Find the service. Check which service is listening or which application is making the connection, using the device’s supported administration interface or documentation.
- Record transport and port. Establish whether the traffic uses TCP or UDP and note the port. Treat these as clues, not an application identity.
- Confirm the application protocol. Check service configuration, a protocol handshake, or protocol-aware inspection. As RFC 7301 explains, a TCP or UDP port is not always definitive for the application protocol.
- Determine whether contents are protected. Establish whether SSH, TLS, or another security layer is active and correctly configured; do not infer encryption merely from the port.
- Restrict unneeded services. Disable or limit services the device does not need, following the manufacturer’s supported procedure.
Why checking exposed services matters
The UK National Cyber Security Centre warns that nonessential running services increase a device’s attack surface and recommends identifying which services can be disabled. Its guidance notes that some devices may have both SSH and Telnet enabled out of the box; defaults vary by model, firmware, and configuration, so check the device rather than assuming a universal setup. See the NCSC device-interface guidance.

For IoT systems, one service may support different protocols or authentication arrangements depending on the product configuration. AWS, for example, documents MQTT, HTTPS, and WebSocket Secure options, with ports and, in some cases, ALPN used in its service-specific mappings. Its secure tunneling feature is likewise specific to AWS IoT and is not a general property of port 8080 or SSH; see AWS IoT protocol documentation and AWS IoT secure tunneling documentation.
