If your teenager is struggling to get started on HSC study, try asking what they want from the year before telling them what they should do. Support works best when it helps your child find a reason and a manageable next step of their own—not when it makes marks feel like a measure of your approval.
Start with their reasons, not your expectations
Choose a calm moment and ask an open question: “What do you want to get out of this HSC year?” The answer may be a particular subject goal, keeping future options open, building confidence, or simply getting through the year in a way that feels manageable. Listen before offering advice.
The NSW Department of Education’s student activity asks, “Why is learning important to you?” It also invites students to consider strategies that could help them stay motivated. Those prompts are useful at home because they shift the conversation from “Do this for me” to “What matters to you, and what might help?” NSW Department of Education wellbeing activities
Your child does not have to feel inspired every day. A personal reason can be modest, and motivation may rise and fall. The aim is not to demand relentless self-discipline; it is to help them connect the work in front of them with something they value.

Turn a big workload into one realistic next step
“Study more” is difficult to act on. Ask what feels manageable this week, then help your teenager break the work into smaller tasks: review one topic, complete a set of practice questions, or spend a short block organising notes for a subject. Agree on a start time and a stopping point that fit their workload and energy.
An HSC advice page reproducing University of Sydney student guidance recommends realistic schedules and smaller, achievable chunks of work. Master of Teaching student Wesley Lai says, “Setting up a schedule will help you organise your time so much better.” This is practical advice for organising study, not a promise of a particular exam result. Make the plan with your child rather than presenting a timetable as a rule to enforce. Paper and pen are enough to map tasks and study blocks; a bought planner is optional, not a prerequisite.
Leave room for rest and the rest of life
A workable schedule includes breaks, free time and sleep—not just study. The University of Sydney advice reproduced on the HSC page says, “Make sure to schedule in some free time for yourself as well!” Treat that as a reminder to pace the workload, not as a clinical guarantee against burnout.

If the timetable repeatedly collapses, treat that as a cue to revisit its size or timing together. A plan that your teenager can realistically follow is more useful than an ambitious schedule that leaves no room for ordinary life.
Offer practical help without taking over
Ask what kind of help would actually be useful. Your teenager may want a quiet place to work, help deciding what to tackle first, a lift to a study session, or simply someone to listen. Agree on the help they welcome, then leave responsibility for their study with them.

- Ask before stepping in: “Would you like help planning this, or do you want to work it out yourself?”
- Notice effort and habits: recognise when they start a task, ask for help or adjust a plan, not only when a mark is high.
- Keep results in perspective: the HSC matters, but a mark or ATAR should not be treated as a verdict on your child’s worth or whole future.
If motivation has dropped, find out what is getting in the way
Before calling it laziness or lack of ambition, ask what feels difficult. The workload may seem too large, the student may not know how to begin, or something else may be affecting their ability to focus. These are possibilities to explore, not conclusions to impose. The cited guidance supports reflection and seeking help; it does not identify one cause or solution for every student.
Try a small reset: choose one task together, decide when to begin, and check whether the plan feels achievable. If the problem continues, widen the conversation beyond study tactics and ask who your teenager would feel comfortable talking with.

Help them identify people they can turn to
Students do not have to manage difficult feelings or school pressure alone. NSW Department of Education wellbeing material encourages students to map people, activities and services that can support them, and to identify school staff they feel comfortable approaching. Invite your child to name a trusted teacher or another staff member, as well as people outside school they can talk to. NSW Department of Education wellbeing activities
The department also points students to its Stay Healthy HSC resources and ReachOut self-check activities. These can be starting points for finding support; if your child is distressed or needs individual advice, involve an appropriate trusted adult or support service rather than relying on a study plan alone.
