Use a 1200 × 630 pixel landscape image, publish it at a stable HTTPS URL, and reference that URL with og:image. Telegram fetches the page’s Open Graph metadata and image when someone shares the link. A reliable generator therefore combines an HTML/CSS card, a rendering service, correct metadata, and crawler access. What a Telegram Open Graph image generator actually does
A Telegram Open Graph (OG) image generator renders a visual card for a web page and makes that image available to Telegram’s link-preview crawler. The generator is software, not a Telegram hardware product. Your page still needs normal metadata: title, description, canonical URL, and an absolute image URL.
Telegram’s preview model can contain the original URL, display URL, site name, title, description, author, preview type, and whether the media is large. The image is only one part of the preview, so changing the artwork does not replace accurate page metadata.
The target canvas
HCTI’s Telegram documentation specifies 1200 × 630 pixels as the target image size. Use a 1.905:1 landscape canvas. Keep the headline, subject, and logo inside a central safe area because Telegram clients and other messaging surfaces can crop or scale the edges.

Dynamic versus static images
- Static: one hand-designed file is reused for many pages.
- Template-based: a renderer fills an HTML/CSS card with each page’s title, category, author, or image.
- URL-based: the
og:imagevalue points to a stable rendering URL that includes the page path or an identifier.
A stable URL matters. If every render receives a new random URL, cache invalidation and debugging become difficult. A deterministic URL lets you test the same asset directly and lets your application choose when to refresh it.
Build the page metadata first
Place the tags in the document’s <head>, not in the visible body or in JavaScript that runs after the initial HTML response. The page must be publicly fetchable by Telegram’s crawler.

og:urlandog:image. - Return the image with a correct image content type such as
image/webp,image/png, orimage/jpeg. - Keep the image URL stable for the life of the page, or deliberately version it when the artwork changes.
- Make sure redirects, authentication, robots rules, WAF challenges, and hotlink protection do not block Telegram.
Create a reusable HTML/CSS card
HTML/CSS templates are useful when each page needs different text or imagery. The following card is intentionally simple: a 1200 × 630 viewport, a restrained text width, and a safe margin around the edges.

</html>Render this template at exactly 1200 × 630, wait for web fonts and remote images to finish, then store the output at the URL used by og:image. If text is supplied by users, escape it before inserting it into HTML and impose length limits so a long title cannot destroy the layout.

Automate one image per page
- Generate a deterministic asset key from the page path or database ID.
- Fill the template with escaped title, author, category, and image values.
- Render the HTML at 1200 × 630 and wait for fonts, images, and any required data.
- Upload the resulting PNG, JPEG, or WebP to object storage or a CDN.
- Emit the same stable URL in
og:image. - Open the image URL directly before testing in Telegram.
For high-volume sites, generate on publish and cache the result rather than rendering on every Telegram request. Keep a manual regeneration operation for title edits, replaced hero images, and template changes. A queue is safer than doing a browser render inside the request that serves the article page.
Telegram-specific access and preview controls
If your firewall or bot-management product filters crawlers, allow requests whose user agent contains TelegramBot. A blocked request can produce a missing title, missing image, or an old preview because Telegram cannot retrieve the new asset.
Telegram’s TDLib exposes controls to disable a preview, choose which URL is used for preview generation, request small or large media, and place the preview above message text. The Bot API exposes link_preview_options on messages. These controls affect how a message displays a preview; they do not repair invalid page metadata or an inaccessible image.
Why a Telegram preview is missing or stale
The tags are not in the initial HTML
View the raw page source, not only the DOM inspector after JavaScript runs. Move the OG tags into the server-rendered <head> if they are injected client-side.

The image URL fails independently
Paste the exact og:image URL into a browser or use an HTTP client. Confirm a successful response, an image content type, no login page, and no unexpected redirect. Check the generated image at its final CDN URL, not only on a local development server.
A firewall blocks Telegram
Review WAF logs for the crawler and permit the TelegramBot user agent where appropriate. Do not disable all security controls blindly; create a narrow rule for the metadata and image routes.
Telegram is serving a cached preview
HCTI warns that Telegram may retain its own cached preview after an image changes. There is no cache-purge endpoint established in the official references used here, so do not promise an instant refresh. Verify the current metadata and image first, then allow time for Telegram to fetch the updated asset. Versioning the image URL can help your site distinguish a new file, but it cannot force Telegram to discard every cached message.
The card is cropped or unreadable
Return to the 1200 × 630 canvas, enlarge the safe margins, reduce headline length, and test on a light and dark Telegram client. Put essential information in the middle two-thirds of the frame.

Performance, reliability, and cost decisions
- Cache rendered assets: rendering once at publish time is cheaper and faster than rendering for each crawler request.
- Wait for dependencies: use a selector, fixed delay, or network-idle condition so fonts and hero images are present before capture.
- Control third-party requests: block ads, trackers, and irrelevant resources when they slow or destabilize rendering.
- Use a fallback: keep a valid default OG image for pages whose personalized render fails.

Testing checklist before publishing
- Raw HTML contains all OG tags in
<head>. og:urlis the canonical public page URL.og:imageloads directly over HTTPS.- The response is an actual PNG, JPEG, or WebP with the expected dimensions.
- The design is 1200 × 630 with essential content in the safe area.
- TelegramBot is not blocked by the firewall.
- The image is checked after CDN deployment, not only before upload.
- A changed title or design has a documented regeneration and cache strategy.
FAQ
Can Telegram use an image other than 1200 × 630?
Other dimensions may be accepted, but HCTI documents 1200 × 630 as the Telegram target. Designing at that size gives you a known landscape baseline.
Does changing only the image file update an existing Telegram message?
Not reliably. Telegram can cache previews, and an already-sent message may continue displaying its stored preview. Validate the new URL and allow for recrawling rather than promising immediate replacement.

Yes. Telegram’s TDLib preview controls and Bot API link_preview_options support disabling or adjusting previews. That is a message-level choice, separate from generating valid OG metadata.
Is an OG image generator useful if every page has the same artwork?
It can still centralize branding and produce a correctly sized, cacheable asset, but a static file may be simpler when page-specific text is unnecessary.
