Neither product’s official documentation establishes a universal winner for accuracy, reliability, or battery life, so the practical choice is the one that fits your group and the people who must receive the location.
Telegram and Google Maps solve different sharing problems
Both features transmit your current position, but they are organized around different relationships. Telegram Live Location is a chat feature: you start it inside an individual conversation or group, and the people in that conversation view the shared position on a map. Google Maps uses Google Location Sharing, where you choose recipients or create a link for people who do not have a Google Account.

That distinction matters on a road trip. A convoy whose members already use one Telegram group can begin sharing without moving to another app. A driver coordinating with relatives, a hotel, or a friend who is not a Google user may find Google’s recipient and link paths easier. In either case, sharing is an active disclosure of personal information, not merely a one-time dropped pin.

How Telegram Live Location works on a road trip
It is built around the group chat
Telegram’s Live Location announcement describes sharing from individual chats and groups. When several people in the same group share, Telegram presents an interactive map of everyone’s current coordinates. That makes it a natural fit for a convoy, a family trip, or a group that is already posting departure times and fuel stops in one Telegram conversation.

The chat-centered design also defines the audience. The people who can view the location are the participants in the conversation where you shared it. If a parent, accommodation host, or roadside contact is not in Telegram, the documented material does not establish a comparable public-link workflow for that person. You would need another way to communicate with that recipient.
Duration is time-limited, but verify the current menu
Telegram’s 2017 launch post listed three Live Location presets: 15 minutes, 1 hour, and 8 hours. Because that announcement is historical, treat those values as a description of the feature at launch rather than a promise that every current Telegram build displays the same choices. Before leaving, open the current Live Location control and confirm the available duration.
Choose a period long enough for the intended leg, not automatically for the whole holiday. A short handoff between two cars may need only the briefest option; an all-day drive may require a longer setting or a fresh share later. The important check is whether the timer is still active when your group expects to find you.

Sharing can continue when Telegram is not on screen
Telegram states that an active Live Location can remain visible to recipients while the app is closed, for as long as the optional feature remains activated. Closing the app therefore is not the same as ending the share. If you stop for the night, change plans, or no longer want the group to follow you, use Telegram’s stop-sharing control rather than relying on app closure.
Privacy follows the message and the chat
Telegram describes Live Location as being treated like other messages in cloud or secret chats. Anyone who can access that conversation can see the active location while it is shared. Select the chat carefully before posting, especially when a large group includes people who do not need to know your route after the current leg.
How Google Maps Location Sharing works on a road trip
You can select a person or use a link
Google documents two recipient paths. You can share with a selected person through Google Location Sharing, or create a link and send it to someone who does not have a Google Account. The link-based option is documented for up to 24 hours. That makes Google useful when the receiving audience is mixed: some people can use their Google accounts, while others only need a link.

Do not treat the two paths as identical. The 24-hour limit belongs to the documented link flow. Account-based sharing has its own recipient and duration controls, and eligibility can differ. When setting up the share, read the duration shown for the exact path you selected instead of assuming that every share lasts a day.
Google lists specific prerequisites
Google’s requirements include a Google Account, a mobile device, an internet connection, and the device’s location setting enabled. Availability may vary for managed Google Workspace accounts. If a work-managed account is involved, confirm that the administrator allows Location Sharing before the trip rather than discovering the restriction at a meeting point.
The retrieved Google instructions are Android-specific. Menus and screens can differ on iPhone, on other operating systems, between account types, and across app versions or regions. Use the current Location Sharing controls in your installation and verify the result on the recipient’s device.

Recipients see more than a moving dot
Google says people you share with can always find your name and photo, your recent device location, and your battery power or charging status. That battery indicator can help a family member judge whether your phone may soon stop reporting, but it is also additional personal information being disclosed. Share only with people who need that context.
A map position is not guaranteed to be an exact road address
Google warns that Maps may display a nearby point of interest or address and can occasionally identify the wrong nearby point of interest in busy areas. Treat the map as a useful indication of your position, not as ground-truth proof of the exact lane, entrance, or building. If someone is meeting you, send a separate written description of the landmark or access road when precision matters.

Which service fits common road-trip situations?
Your whole convoy already uses Telegram
Telegram is the lower-friction choice when every driver and passenger is already in one Telegram group. The map appears alongside the conversation, and multiple members can share their coordinates on the same interactive view. Confirm the current duration before starting and remember that closing Telegram does not necessarily stop an active share.
You need to reach someone without a Google Account
Google Maps has the clearer documented path when the recipient is not a Google user: create a link and send it through your normal messaging method. The documented maximum for that link is 24 hours. Tell the recipient when the link should expire and create a new share if the trip continues beyond that window.
Your recipients need account-level controls
Use Google’s selected-recipient flow when you want to name specific people and manage the share through Google Location Sharing. The exact duration and eligibility shown can depend on the account and device, so review the confirmation screen rather than assuming the link rules apply.
You are choosing on battery or reliability grounds
The official material reviewed here does not include a controlled, side-by-side battery test or reliability measurement. Telegram’s technical documentation describes periodic update fields, but it is not a consumer test of update cadence or service availability. Google exposes battery status to recipients, but that is not evidence that Google uses less or more power. Choose based on audience and access, and carry out a pre-trip check instead of promising a technical winner.

Set up Telegram before departure
- Open the exact individual chat or group that should see your position.
- Start the chat’s Live Location control and review the duration options displayed by your current Telegram version.
- Select the shortest period that covers the planned driving leg, or note when you will renew the share.
- Send the Live Location and confirm that the map appears in the conversation.
- Ask one traveler to verify that the location is visible. This catches a wrong-chat selection before the cars separate.
- At the end of the leg or trip, use Telegram’s stop-sharing control. Do not assume that closing the app has ended the share.
Set up Google Maps before departure
- Sign in to the Google Account that will provide the location.
- On the phone, enable the device location setting and confirm that the phone has an active internet connection.
- Open Google’s Location Sharing control in Maps or the documented Google sharing flow.
- Choose either a specific recipient or the link option. Use the link path only when its up-to-24-hour limit fits the handoff.
- Review the duration shown for that exact recipient path. Account-based sharing and link sharing do not necessarily offer the same controls.
- Send the share and verify it from the recipient’s device. Check that the person can see your recent location and understands when the share will end.
- When the trip coordination is over, stop sharing with the individual or disable the active share using Google’s controls.
Checks to make while you are on the road
- Confirm the audience: Make sure the Telegram chat or Google recipient is the intended person or group.
- Confirm the timer: Telegram’s historical presets and Google’s current duration controls can end before your itinerary does.
- Confirm connectivity: Google lists an active internet connection as a requirement. A missing connection can prevent a current position from reaching the recipient.
- Confirm device location: Google requires the phone’s location setting to be enabled.
- Confirm the map context: A nearby point of interest or address may be shown, so use landmarks and written directions for a precise meeting point.
- End the share deliberately: Both services provide a way to stop sharing; use it when the need has ended.
Privacy and safety decisions
Real-time location reveals where you are now and where you were recently. Decide who needs access before pressing Send. For Telegram, the audience is the conversation’s participants, and the location remains available while the feature is active. For Google, recipients may also see your name, photo, and battery state.
Use the narrowest audience that satisfies the trip plan. A group share is appropriate when every member is coordinating the convoy; a one-person share is more suitable for a family member waiting at the destination. If a link is used, remember that anyone who receives that link may be able to use it during its active period; send it only through a channel you trust and stop or let it expire when the handoff is complete.
Troubleshooting when a recipient cannot see you
Telegram map is missing or stops updating
- Check that Live Location was posted in the intended chat or group.
- Review whether the selected duration has expired and start a new share if the drive continues.
- Remember that closing Telegram does not itself end an active share; use the stop control when you want it off.
- Ask the recipient to reopen the conversation and map view.
Google recipient cannot open the location
- Confirm that the sender is signed in to the intended Google Account.
- Check the phone’s internet connection and location setting, both listed by Google as requirements.
- If the account is managed by an organization, check whether Google Workspace policies restrict Location Sharing.
- Verify whether the link’s 24-hour window has expired, or whether the account-based share ended at its selected duration.
- Send a fresh share and have the recipient confirm that the map, recent location, and expected recipient identity are visible.
Bottom line for a road trip
Telegram Live Location is the practical fit for a group already coordinating inside Telegram. Google Maps is the more flexible fit when you need named Google recipients or a link for someone without a Google Account. Check the live duration, recipient list, internet connection, and device-location setting before departure; stop sharing when the trip coordination ends. The official documentation does not justify declaring either service universally more accurate, reliable, private, or battery-efficient.
