A Telegram feed that appears stuck usually has one of three causes: notifications are blocked, the affected device cannot refresh its local data, or the item is a device-only Secret Chat rather than a cloud chat. Start by checking the same conversation in Telegram Web or Desktop, then work from the least disruptive fix to the most disruptive.
First, identify what is actually failing
“Telegram is not updating” can describe different symptoms, and each points to a different fix. Before changing settings, classify the problem:

If Web or Desktop shows the new messages while one mobile client does not, the account and cloud copy are probably available; the failure is likely local to that client. That is an inference from the cross-device difference, not a guarantee that Telegram’s servers are healthy.
Check notifications and background access before touching data
Notification failure and feed-sync failure overlap, but they are not the same. A phone can receive no alert while the feed is perfectly synchronized, or it can display an alert while the conversation view fails to load the message. Check both Telegram’s own controls and the operating system’s controls.

Android notification checklist
- In Telegram, open the notification settings and confirm notifications are enabled for private chats, groups, and channels as applicable.
- Open the affected chat or group and make sure it is not muted.
- In Android’s app-notification settings, set Telegram’s notification channel importance to High or greater. A lower importance can suppress or delay alerts even when Telegram is configured correctly.
- Confirm that Google Play Services is installed and working. Telegram’s Android FAQ identifies it as a requirement for reliable push notifications on supported devices.
- Open your battery-saving or power-management app and whitelist Telegram. Battery optimizers can stop the background process that receives updates.
- On Huawei and Xiaomi phones, add Telegram to the system’s allowed or protected-app list and enable its autostart permission. These vendor controls can override normal Android background behavior.
After changing these settings, send a test message to the account from another client and leave the phone locked for a minute. This distinguishes an immediate permission fix from a feed that only updates after you manually open the app.
iPhone and iPad notification checklist
- In Telegram, enable notifications and verify that the affected chat, group, or channel is not muted.
- In iPhone Settings, open Telegram’s notification page and allow notifications, sounds, badges, and the alert styles you want to use.
- Check Focus, Scheduled Summary, and any active notification filters that could defer Telegram alerts.
- Force-quit Telegram, then relaunch it. This restarts the client after permission changes and can clear a stuck notification registration.
- If alerts remain silent, use Telegram’s built-in alert-style reset procedure, then test again with a newly sent message.
iOS does not expose Android-style vendor autostart controls, so the important checks are Telegram’s mute state, iPhone notification permission, and system modes that summarize or silence alerts.
Refresh Telegram’s local storage safely
Telegram stores local copies and media on each device. Removing that local data is different from deleting a cloud conversation. Start with the reversible storage operation:

- Open Telegram and go to Settings > Data and Storage > Storage Usage.
- Tap Clear cache.
- Choose the media categories or time ranges you want to remove, if Telegram presents those options, and confirm.
- Return to the affected chat and allow Telegram time to download the needed media again.
Telegram’s FAQ describes this operation as freeing space “without logging out.” Cloud messages remain available, so clearing cache does not delete your chats or remove the account. Photos, videos, and files may need to be downloaded again when you view them.
Cache clearing is useful when storage is tight or a damaged local media copy is interfering with the interface. It will not repair a muted chat, a disabled operating-system permission, or a Secret Chat that was created on another device.
When notifications arrive but the message is missing
This symptom is more specific: Telegram’s push system received enough information to show an alert, but the mobile conversation view did not obtain or display the corresponding message. First confirm that the message is visible in Telegram Web or Desktop. If it is, Telegram’s bug tracker lists a temporary workaround:

- Open Settings > Data and Storage > Storage Usage.
- Tap Clear Local Database.
- Restart or relaunch Telegram if it does not reopen the chat automatically.
- Open the affected conversation and wait while the client rebuilds its local index from the cloud.
Clear Local Database is more disruptive than Clear cache. It rebuilds Telegram’s local message index and can take time on a large account. Keep the app open on a reliable connection while it repopulates. Do not use it merely because a notification was delayed; reserve it for the specific case in which messages are visible on Web/Desktop but absent from the mobile client.

Ordinary Telegram cloud chats synchronize across the devices signed in to the same account. A message sent in a cloud chat should therefore become available on your other logged-in clients once they connect.
Secret Chats are different. They are encrypted for, and tied to, the devices on which they were created. They are not part of normal cloud synchronization. A Secret Chat that exists on one phone will not appear on Telegram Web, Desktop, or a newly signed-in phone simply because those clients use the same account.

Check the chat type before clearing data or reinstalling anything. Treating a Secret Chat as a broken cloud chat can lead you to take destructive steps without changing its expected behavior.
Use logout and re-login only as a last resort
Signing out can reset an account session, but it has a consequence that cache clearing does not. Telegram says cloud messages remain in the account after logout, while Secret Chats and their messages are removed from that device.

Before logging out:
- Confirm that you can receive a Telegram login code by SMS, phone call, or another currently available method.
- Make sure you know which phone number is attached to the account and that two-step verification credentials are available if enabled.
- Understand that Secret Chats on the device will be lost when the session is removed.
- Keep another logged-in client available if you need to verify that cloud messages are still present.
After signing back in, give Telegram time to rebuild its cloud-chat list and media index. If the same one-device problem returns immediately, repeated logouts are unlikely to be a productive fix; return to notification, battery, and local-database checks instead.

Diagnose by scope: one chat, one device, or every device
Only one chat is stale
- Open the chat’s profile and check whether it is muted or archived.
- Check the chat on Web/Desktop to separate a chat-specific display problem from an account-wide outage.
- If it is a cloud chat and the message exists elsewhere, use Clear Local Database rather than logging out immediately.
Every chat is stale on one phone
- Test a different network, such as mobile data instead of Wi-Fi, to rule out a local connection path.
- Verify that battery restrictions, autostart controls, and background data permissions are not stopping Telegram.
- Clear cache first; use Clear Local Database only when messages are demonstrably present on another client.
Every device is missing the same messages
That pattern is not explained by a single phone’s cache. Check whether the conversation is a Secret Chat, whether the sender actually completed the send, and whether Telegram itself is experiencing a service-side problem. Do not assume that reinstalling one client can restore a message that is absent from the account’s cloud copy.
What clearing cache does—and does not do
- It does: remove selected locally stored media and temporary files, reclaiming device storage.
- It does not: log you out, delete cloud messages, or convert a Secret Chat into a cloud chat.
- You may notice: thumbnails and media loading again as Telegram downloads them.
- It cannot fix: disabled notifications, a muted conversation, missing Google Play Services, aggressive battery management, or a server-side account problem.
Use the wording in Telegram’s Storage Usage screen carefully. Clear cache and Clear Local Database are separate actions with different purposes; selecting the latter is not simply a faster version of clearing media files.
When to escalate to Telegram support
Escalate when the problem persists after notification checks, a controlled cache clear, and the appropriate local-database workaround—or when the same failure affects multiple clients. A useful report lets support correlate the failure with server and client events.
Include:
- The exact Telegram app version and phone operating-system version.
- The device model and whether the failure occurs on Wi-Fi, mobile data, or both.
- The exact date and time a message was sent, received as a notification, or failed to appear.
- The chat type (cloud or Secret Chat), whether the chat is muted, and whether the message is visible on Web/Desktop.
- Precise reproduction steps, including whether force-quitting, clearing cache, or clearing the local database changed the behavior.
- System and app logs when available. Telegram Support Force specifically asks for logs that capture the problem and when the message was received.
Do not include another person’s private message content unless support explicitly needs it. Redact phone numbers, login codes, passwords, and unrelated conversations from screenshots or logs.
A practical decision path
- Compare clients: check the same cloud chat in Telegram Web or Desktop.
- Classify the failure: no alert, stale feed, or alert with missing message.
- Fix permissions: enable Telegram notifications, unmute the chat, and apply the Android or iOS checks for your platform.
- Fix background access: confirm Google Play Services and battery/autostart allowances on Android; check Focus and notification delivery on iOS.
- Clear cache: use Settings > Data and Storage > Storage Usage > Clear cache when storage or local media is suspect.
- Rebuild local data: if alerts arrive and Web/Desktop has the message, use Clear Local Database in the same Storage Usage area.
- Check chat type: do not expect Secret Chats to synchronize.
- Protect access before logout: verify login-code access and accept the loss of device-local Secret Chats.
- Escalate with diagnostics: provide versions, timestamps, symptoms, reproduction steps, and logs.
For most one-device failures, this order resolves the problem without risking account access or Secret Chat history. The key distinction is whether Telegram has the message in the cloud and whether the failure is delivery of the alert or rendering of the local conversation.
