A 16-year-old hiker was rescued by helicopter after becoming stranded on steep climbing terrain while trying to reach Crown Mountain near Vancouver. The route was reportedly meant to take him through a gully, but he ended up on the Widowmaker climbing route. The original October 5 Gizmodo report said the AI tool was unknown; later that day, CTV News attributed the directions to Claude, citing North Shore Rescue search manager Paul Markey.
What happened on the Crown Mountain hike?
The teenager set out alone from Grouse Mountain at around 8 a.m., intending to hike to Crown Mountain. North Shore Rescue received a call shortly before 3:30 p.m. after he became stranded on steep terrain. Reporting says the planned route was supposed to pass through a gully, but he ended up at the base of the final headwall on the Widowmaker, a climbing route.

Two rescue technicians were lowered from a helicopter and hoisted him to safety. The operation ended shortly before 6:30 p.m. Reports described him as frightened but safely rescued. North Shore Rescue said it was unclear exactly where or how he had left the Crown hiking route; the reporting does not establish the precise point where the route went wrong. Gizmodo’s October 5 account quoted the rescue team describing how he had become stranded on the Widowmaker.
Which AI tool did he use?
That detail changed across publication-time reporting. Gizmodo’s October 5 story said the AI tool had not been identified. A later CTV News report attributed the directions to Claude, citing North Shore Rescue search manager Paul Markey. The later attribution should not be retroactively presented as something the original story had established.

CTV also reported Markey’s warning: “Claude has never been in that specific area, has never been on that route, and has never been in the outdoors—do your own research and gain your own knowledge of the area and supplement it with training and navigation.” That statement is Markey’s characterization in the later report, not an independent account of the teenager’s AI conversation.
Can AI safely plan a hiking route?
This incident shows why an AI-generated route should be treated as a suggestion to verify, not as proof that a route is suitable. The reports describe a mismatch between an intended hiking route and steep climbing terrain, but they do not establish exactly how the hiker left the intended route or independently document the AI exchange. One rescue cannot show that all AI route advice is wrong; it does show the consequences when route information is not adequately checked against the terrain, the hiker’s ability, and reliable local information.

- Confirm that the line is an established hiking route, not a climbing route or an approach that crosses hazardous terrain. A route that reaches the right summit is not necessarily a safe hiking route.
- Compare an AI suggestion with authoritative maps and local, current information. Gizmodo reported Markey recommending Gaia GPS, CalTopo, and AllTrails as examples of mapping and navigation tools; that recommendation is not a guarantee that any app’s route is safe or up to date.
- Check terrain, access, and conditions, and make sure the route matches the group’s experience, fitness, and equipment.
- Do not rely on an unfamiliar route description if it conflicts with what the map, local guidance, or conditions show. Stop and reassess rather than continuing into terrain that exceeds your ability.
What should hikers do before heading out?
AdventureSmart summarizes outdoor preparation as the Three Ts: trip planning, training, and taking the essentials. Its advice includes planning the route, checking weather and conditions, choosing a trip that fits the group’s ability, and leaving a trip plan with someone. Navigation and communication devices are among the essentials. AdventureSmart’s trip-planning guidance offers the full checklist.
