A Hindustan Times report says an X user described a friend who lost ₹14 lakh in savings through trading and later accumulated ₹24 lakh in loans. The report’s ₹38 lakh figure adds those two amounts; it is the account’s stated arithmetic, not an independently audited total. The account is a cautionary story about how trading losses and borrowing reportedly escalated, not verified evidence about the person, a clinical diagnosis, or a typical retail-trading outcome.
What Hindustan Times reported
In a report updated October 2, 2026, Sanya Jain of Hindustan Times relayed an account posted on X by a user identified as Hemdharpan, who said the person involved was a friend. Hindustan Times did not independently verify the friend’s identity or the financial events, so the details below should be read as claims attributed to that post.

According to the report, the friend was a 35-year-old IT worker earning ₹2 lakh a month, married with a child, and had ₹14 lakh in savings. The post said a colleague showed him a Zerodha dashboard with a claimed ₹12,000 profit from Nifty options in 45 minutes. He reportedly tried intraday trading, first gaining ₹18,000 in two hours, then losing ₹50,000 in minutes after not using a stop-loss.

How the reported losses became debt
The account says the ₹14 lakh in savings had been spent on trading losses by mid-2025. It then describes the subject taking personal loans from three banks under a false pretext, borrowing through instant-loan apps, and eventually owing ₹24 lakh in loans. Hindustan Times said loan-recovery agents arrived in late 2025; the subject reportedly sold his car and arranged a loan restructuring plan.

The headline’s ₹38 lakh total is the account’s addition of ₹14 lakh in savings losses and ₹24 lakh in debt. It is not a separate reported loan balance or a verified calculation of net losses.
What the account does—and does not—show
The post, as relayed by Hindustan Times, describes an individual’s progression from seeing a colleague’s claimed options profit to trading, losses, and borrowing. It does not establish that this sequence is typical, provide evidence about how often retail traders experience debt, or support a clinical diagnosis. The report’s use of “trading addiction” should not be treated as a diagnosis.

Zerodha appears in the story because the colleague reportedly showed the subject a dashboard on that platform. The report does not establish that Zerodha caused the losses or endorsed the colleague’s claim. It also does not independently confirm the amounts or the identity of the person described.

- Treat the account as a warning shared through social media and relayed by a news report, not as independently confirmed case evidence.
- A claimed short-term profit—such as the colleague’s reported ₹12,000 gain—does not establish likely outcomes for someone else.
- The account’s reported sequence includes further trading losses and borrowing; it does not prove that all trading leads to this outcome.
- Hemdharpan’s quoted warning in the report was: “Markets are brutal.” The X user also wrote, “Only solution is to STOP NOW. Close the account, uninstall the apps, and seek help.” These are the poster’s words, not independently assessed advice or a named support referral.
The report names no specific debt-counselling, loan-restructuring, or mental-health service. Anyone seeking support would need to identify a provider appropriate to their location and needs rather than relying on this account for a referral.
